I'm new to the forum and I wanted to say that this is a fascinating look at the bullshit these idiots get away with. Google has an Arts and Culture section and they are talking about manga. They mention Rumiko Takahashi and her work. I was concerned with how Ranma would be interpreted by the pronoun brigade and it finally happened... they incorrectly claim that Ranma is "a character that tries to escape gender distinctions." No, Ranma is cursed to turn into a woman and he desperately tries to get rid of said curse. Is it too much to ask for an accurate description? This is getting out of hand and downrght ridiculous.
View attachment 10088
This sounds like a classic case of dumbfuck scholars claiming to know more about the work than the very alive creator.
Ms. Rumiko works like an ant, strict schedule and all, I guess she has no time to this kind of shit anymore, she's doing the manga about the Inuyasha and Kagome's child now.
I saw Sailor Moon in my teens in the 80's and all the characters that were female then sometimes the brazilian dubbing masked as men to avoid lesbian platonic relationships, Sailor Stars that literally transformed to women but lived disguised as men and Ranma was very obviously a curse, dude fell in a puddle and turned in a girl, there's no trans anything in it but you know, current year blah blah blah...
This is sickening, instead of writing geniuine transpeople stories, they're trying to hijack yet another person's works to smudge the MESSAGE.

as we learned from this past week, when katrina signs off on the quality of something, you know that it is gold

expect the accuracy of pqube's translations to drop as he lets in more of his friends and lets run amok like an infection
make sure to definitely keep an eye on pqube from this point on
It was shocking to me this Katrina chick got anywhere near something like Persona. So shocked i made an account to comment on it lol (Been lurking a couple days). I knew from this thread she is bad news, but thought it was only limited to minor anime dub and shit.

You just know they will fck this up. P5 is kinda new but 3 and 4 were released 14-16 years ago to an audience with a complete different worldview. With how screwed up localizers and the US are nowadays? They will try to turn Kanji and Naoto into the T-word no doubt, same as that Seven Sea manga. Evokers will probably spark a bigger debate than 2006 because of how guns and schools are such a hot topic in Murica recently. These were tragedies no doubt. But I'm sick of how that shit affects media made by other countries that the rest of the world also wants to enjoy. It's not like the US gave a rat's ass about our problems either. (I mean REAL problems, not made up ones).

Wish i found a place like this earlier. I basically gave up on the English version for games after knowing enough Japanese to just play the original. I also realized that most consumers don't give an F about the botchering so it felt like a lost cause.

Rather than just keeping an eye, people should just avoid them from now on.
If they suddenly have less sales than usual, should make them think a bit about what went wrong.
Whenever someone writes the Katrina thread they should mention this

I second this. even if a game they putting out looks good avoid it

boycotts only work if people dont chicken the fuck out once something comes out they think they would like and cave in. it's why most of them fail. people just get replaced with ignorant people who dont know anything about shit or chicken out and end up buying shit anyway.

but for niche shit every sale matters. at least until shit like the game pass takes off more and buying games on their own gets phased out and everything is sub-model. but that's a black pill for another day.

if you see these people's names in credits or if they boast about it on Twitter then you know what you need to avoid

dont worry you are with like-minded people now. it might seem like you are alone out there but people like us are around. and based on how pissed people have been over stuff like the recent seven seas bullshit our numbers are growing along with discontent in true fans. the more and more these people publicly fuck up the more we grow in number as more people get woken up to whats relay going on.

so it's not all black pills and doomer-ing just yet. we must not lose hope

I wouldnt worry too much about this one
other that slipping in something the likes of a stale meme in an unvoiced flavor text somewhere in the game, there isnt much she can do in her current position on the game
According to her, it is mostly porting and cleanup like changing button prompts and fixing errors.
The stuff you are thinking of would require some really heavy lifting like getting the voice cast back in to re record entire sections of the game
If this was a remake of the games and not just ports I would not put it past her to do things like that but the works are mostly safe
It is more of a bummer that they chose portable over FES for 3 rather than her tinkering with them

I question the effectiveness of boycotts in this case
You are correct that niche releases often run with smaller margins than larger ones but I question the idea that if the publishers see a big drop in the sales of a game they will immediately go "its the translators" and tighten up the quality control. Doubly so that these guys often have friends in HR so that anything short of the japanese side beating down their door and asking what the hell is going on is not going to affect them

I prefer the strategy of letting the east know what is going on. The translators operate almost exclusively on deception. Japanese business typically has a level of honor and decorum and they assume that their partners in other countries share the same values when that they are acting in good faith when this is simply false. Spreading the reality to creatives will hopefully wake them up to the fact that these people are malicious and take precautions with their work when bringing them overseas

We should still continue our process of chasing these snakes to the ends of the earth and documenting all the mess they make.

i mean this isn't a one strategy is all you can do situation.
You can not support the devs and warn the East at the same time.
only one of these things won't work anyway, it'll be a mixture of approaches that'll ultimately win.
If people are avoiding the game it'll be another reason for the East to listen to the sudden increase in mail about some "Trannylator" thing y'know?

i have to agree with Holo above. these strats are not mutually exclusive and we can do both at the same time. avoid games these people work on where possible but also be attempting to bypass the western braches and establish contact directly with the Japanese. i think if we want to finally see any progress we need a multi-pronged approach to this

and on this note, as i think we have seen from the seven seas shit as of late this bypass strat seems to be effective. contacting the Japanese publisher and/or author seems to be a good way to go about this. as this is modern times and we HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO THAT NOW unlike let's say back in the 80s and 90s. its easier than ever to find the author's Twitter or other socials as well as the jap publisher's contact info

but I think the BEST thing to do is to have dedicated people write up individual non-formatted responses (maybe with some format but they need to all be personalized so they dont look like auto-gen bot posts) and send these to the JP publishers by email in BOTH jp and English, if we just screech at them on Twitter yea that some times works but it's much easier to stonewall angry Twitter posts then it is to ignore individual made 500 something emails all telling them something fucky is going on that land on someone's desk

i also think once we get the re-organize sorted the verified info form said threads should be made into some kind of wiki that can then be translated into Japanese so it can be sent to the Japanese so we can get them on our site and show them just how fucked things are over here. we need the info in one nice package that's easy to get to and understand

this is all gonna take time. but i think if we go about this right then unlike past endeavours we might be able to make a dent here

I admit my worries may sounds a bit excessive. Still, the games are old and many parts of them are unvoiced. There are potentially a lot of unvoiced scenes she can mess up, compares to games nowadays that are fully voiced.

She could easily slip something in the P4 social links scenes to push their Agenda without rewriting everything outright. "You are a boy who likes knitting? You MUST be trans!". Hell, they may even try and force Atlus to alter scenes similar to that Okama scene in Persona 5 because it "puts gays in a bad light". It's not like there is no precedent.

It's sad how we have to be vigilant with something that should entertain us. Things like Atlus choosing to port P3P over FES is bad enough as it is.

I hate how stupid manipulation is nowadays. It has become so stupid, that you have to go through hundreds of retarded hoops, there's nothing witty or smart about it, they just lie to your face.
Fucking hell, the answer is the simplest there is, "Ranma does not want this curse, he's a guy."

Do i understand this correctly? This garbage is actually written by a Japanese government agency to ....combat manga piracy? What?

I also love the white text on a black and white manga background. @Misato 's tax ¥'s at work. :cirno-laugh:

It's Meru time... (stealing this from Migi)

I could not find this posted here, but if it was I can take it down.

I wish I could do the mental gymnastics these people do to justify not doing my job properly.
they are so desperate to claw their way back to any kind of respectability it is almost pathetic
Their greatest sin is pride, they have no humility, even when creating a critical error, they immediately go back to jerking each other off in their hugbox

"do you want genuinely want this source material to be treated well in translation, or do you just want to put someone else down?"

It doesn't come up often why I fight so hard for translation integrity so I think now would be a time to discuss it. I will post the bit I wrote on fedi and I am interested in hearing if you guys have other reasons

"I have two reasons

The first is the disgust that people paid and entrusted with handling someone elses work and translating it into another language would treat it as their own personal plaything
It especially brings my blood to a boil when you have hacks like zach davidsson who thinks of himself as writer yet unable to create his own work feels perfectly fine with doing whatever he wants with pieces of media that are far better than anything he could ever create and then has the audacity to want the writing credit alongside the original author
Evil cannot create, only defile what is good am i right?

Second is the unethical exploitation of the audience. People consuming translated media go into it with the notion that the translation is a faithful interpretation. Unless something is so inaccurate or out of place, the average person will not notice anything. Localizers have no moral quandary with taking advantage of people who do not have the ability to properly evaluate the quality of their work to do sloppy job for a quick paycheck, push their ideological agenda, or vandalize because they thought it would be funny
No man shall profit from choosing to be evil at the expense of those who choose to be good"

to answer Meru's question at the end, both
for the above reasons and knocking you assholes down a peg
I think the Japanese writers if they knew what you do and why you do it would be extremely grateful if we put each and everyone of you out on the street

lets compare meru's view's on translation to Ken Liu, the guy who translated "the three body problem" into English which is regarded as a excellent translation
