Something called news and interests just appeared on my computer it showed weather and a lot of news I don't want to read so I figured fuck this crap.
And went on a hunt to get rid of this.

And found these instructions.

Turn News & Interests on or off using Registry Editor.​

1. Open Registry Editor by running regedit ​

2. Go to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Feeds ​

3. In the right pane, create or modify a DWORD (32-bit) parameter named ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode. You do not need to additionally create the DWORD parameter if it already exists. ​

4. Set or change values for ShellFeedsTaskbarViewMode as follows:
  • 0 - Show icon and text
  • 1 - Show only icon
  • 2 - Disabled

5. Close the registry editor and log out, then log back in for the changes to take effect. ​

Now do anyone with computer knowledge know if this works and how disabled this actually makes it. I presume the program is still installed but does this force it to not run or what exactly?

Better yet if someone knows exactly what program it is and if it can be uninstalled safely without breaking something else?

With virtually everything implemented by Microsoft for its own operating system, it's really hard to trust whether or not the tools they provide you (i.e. the registry editor and group policy editor) actually do what they say they will do. I'm not nearly as blackpilled on the impotence of these editors as far as some here may be, but it's something to keep in mind.

I would say you're probably fine just disabling it in registry editor and/or group policy editor. You're always going to want to revisit these registry keys and group policy settings with every update to ensure they didn't roll it back for you.

Given that this isn't a very important piece of software, I don't think Microsoft is going to try to get it to stick on like say Cortana. However, what you provided is intended to disable it, not remove it, so I would assume the program is still there. I'd probably wait for a tool like ShutUp10, Debotnet, or W10Privacy to update with an option to completely remove or gut this through a PowerShell Script, which in my experience tend to gut some of the Microsoft bloat fairly well.
