So you guys seem to have a lot of knowledge about gacha.

what would you suggest for someone who virtually has no experience in the genre?

Short answer: don't
Longer answer: I played some gacha games including Honkai Impact 3rd, FGO, Girls Frontline(which I dropped and got back to 3 or 4 times(lost the count)) etc.
At first you'll really love the game and the characters you get, the music, all the rewards. Hell, maybe you'll like the story even...but it's temporary. At some point you'll lose interest in enjoying the game and start to do shortcuts to whatever will give you best results in the game and play the game "out of necessity" (you have to do weeklys, dailys, daily log-ins, events(more than anything!)). It's bad if you're playing gacha in the first place, it's even worse when you're playing a powercreep gacha! When I used to play Epic 7 that despite having the most broken characters from gacha, I could not get the right gear because it was a pure RNJesus fest with every type of gear(worst to best) + the stats you want were also randomised:retard:(who the fuck designed this shit). At some point I hit the gold rank in the arena (or whatever it was called). The first two ranks were challenging, but fun. Gold rank had an absolute P2W powercreep spike like fuck that shit. Tanks kill your DPS chars immediatly and when your turn starts and try to attack them, most likely your characters will die anyway as the parties on gold rank usually had that one tank knight hero who could retaliate when attacked. I have no idea how people could get higher than that. Yeah, either you play the game everyday and somehow get the right gear or you drop the game.
Epic 7 was my worst experience with gacha games, but more or less it was the section in bold that was my usual experience with gacha. Avoid them like plague:senko-disgust:

the only gacha games that i play casually/for the story are FGO (GACHA HELL plz dont ever pay to roll you'll go broke) and Arknights, they have a great story (though the early chapters are meh) and somewhat easy to follow gameplay

Well then I certainly did not expect you guys to have that low opinion on gacha. now I wonder if I should make a new thread asking for anime games to play, since to me thats the appeal of gacha

could just rename this thread to anime games instead of making a new one.
as for anime games to play, do you mean actual games or like VNs?

Sure you can rename it. I mean games, tho vns that have a high degree of interactivity could also count

I didn't play many anime games (that were not vns). Same thing for VNs tho but I can recommend you few picks just in case:
-Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 1
If you like fanservice, lolis, lots of meta jokes related to video games and consoles you should probably think about trying this game. You may also want to buy certain dlcs because you could face a wall if you want to do 100% run. (or avoid the grind) Also: Nep Nep :nep:
-Steins;Gate
Really good visual novel that I almost finished on my (now no longer available:satania-cry: ) PS Vita. The game tells you a story of a crazy scientist and his crew that started to mess with time traveling. You have several routes that you can see in the game to better understand each of the main cast characters. Btw. Don't get distracted at the beginning.
-Trap Shrine
Just like in the title, it's about traps. Nuff said. Make sure to have patch "update2" instead of update1. Update 2 has 18+scenes with no censorship and no mosaics. Update 1 has the 18+scenes but with mosaics censorship.
-Ni no kuni 2
If you like studio ghibli movies and jrpgs hop on bro. Your main task is to rebuild your kingdom while also getting a bigger party and traveling to different parts of the world to get peace treaties with other kingdoms. Great english (Scottish) dub and Japanese as well.

I'd say granblue is one of the best out there, it got an interesting story enterely voiced and the english translation is pretty good. Another good thing is that right now is the 7yrs anniversary so you'd get plenty of good character for free. I guess azur lane is also a good first gacha since it's pretty easy and have high ssr rate but as a ex-player i think it's impossible to not drop it cause it become really boring at some point.

i would suggest arknights its pretty fun tower defense but with addition of strong anime girls, it has quite big lore and nearly every character have some kind of interesting lore or some even have their own events, for starters its really welcoming and easy at start but more you play the more challenging game becomes, and events in game are quite often so there is nearly always something to do

+1 for Azure Lane, farming for pulls as F2P is not particularly difficult and the $$$ to 10-roll rate is so shit you don't want to do that anyways. The only thing is you pretty much won't be able to get skins as a F2P since using your story gems (and a couple other very slow trickles) on account upgrades is much more important.

Basically, I've been playing since the EN dropped years ago and have never felt so much fomo that I spent real money on pulls. I only occasionally feed some money in to get a skin I really like and to help support keeping the game going.

It's the only gacha I keep regularly going back to since it's one of the few where I actually like both the active gameplay and the auto grind. And the girls are good. Really good.

EDIT: Oh, also, it's one of those games where "team full of max-stars" isn't the best strat and you can get very far on a limited pool of purples and even blues.

Oh, and RE: other gacha games I've played worth mentioning:

Arknights is very good and probably had the most interesting story to it but I was not a fan of the auto grind it had and ended up dropping it.

Girls Frontline is one I intend to pick up again at some point. Seemed to also be very F2P friendly aside from skins. Also has merit to running not max rarity and max upgraded units.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is kinda weird for me. I played it again recently and while there is *a ton* of content and lots of familiar faces to collect, the monetization has been steadily getting more and more invasive.

Granblue Fantasy is great, probably top of its class. I can never stick with it for very long though since the load times are so damn long. Note: This one doesn't have a launcher on the Play Store, you need to download Qoo App (or similar) and then set the game to English when you start it up.

There's a lot of really passable FGO clones out there too (EG: Epic Seven) but I don't like that style of combat at all so your mileage may vary.

I don't really play gatcha but I do have some anime games

RPG:

-Etrian Odyssey
>Turn based dungeon crawler where you create 5 party members and travel trough a giant labyrinth with
classes and setting change every game
>MAPS! I hope you love maps because drawing them is the gimmick
>5 games in the series, all the games except for 3 are on the 3DS with the remakes of the first 2 adding an
story mode
-Hyperdimension Neptunia series
>Meta and made for otakus
>Basically a vn
>Actual gameplay is turn based with character being able to move around in an arena with all attacks
having AOEs depending on weapon and skill
>Don't play the PS3 games unless you really like the dialog, everything else is on pc
-Omega Labyrinth series
>Rouge-like dungeon crawler (ever see pokemon mystery dungeon basically that gameplay)
>Gimmick is that exp increases your bust size which increase stats of you character and items you identify
by giving them paizuri (no I'm not joking)
>Most of the cg illustrations are "intractable" (meaning you can touch the characters boobs and/or butt
and it will jiggle)
>The first games are on Vita with an english patch, Z in on PS4 and Vita with english patches for both (it
came out yesterday holy fuck), and Life is on Switch and PS4 released in english but the PS4 version is
censored so much that its called Labyrinth Life because they used lower case omega(ω) as boobs in the
cover art
-Death end re;Quest
>Story about a game dev being trapped inside a scrapped mmorpg with no memory and being able to
talk to her friend on the outside, gets pretty fucked up.
>Plays very similar to Neptunia but does some cool things with combos
-Kingdom Hearts 1&2
>Story is shit throughout the series but most okay in these 2 games (1 more than 2)
>Legitimately very good action RPGs with 2 being one of the best
>God tier music
>Play the Final Mix versions not the originals that released in english on PS2
>released on PS2,PS3,PS4,XBONE, and soon pc (but only through epic)
-Shin Megami Tensei
>Turn based JRPG series with a fuck ton of spin off series
>Recruit and fuse demons to kill other demons
>Notoriously hard with newer games having easier modes if you need it
>Moderately interesting stories about chaos and order (both tend to be fucked so go for neutrality)
>First 2 games on SNES(1 is kind of jank), 3 is on PS2 and remastered for PS4 and Switch(big frame drops
on Switch version), 4 and its sequel are on 3DS, 5 coming out on Switch sometime this year
-Persona 3,4,5
>Despite the memes actually pretty good
>SMT but add high school social life you never had and replace the word demon with persona/shadows
>Story is more focused on a singular theme (death, truth, rebellion) instead of chaos and order

Rhythm:

-Any Project Diva game (except for maybe the psp games)
>Future Tone(PS4) and Mega 39's(Switch) are going to be the biggest bang for your buck with the most
songs out of all the games, however, they play like the arcade game which I don't personally like
>Aside from the 2 mentioned and the PSP games (because I haven't played them) above quality of the
sound tracks: F(PS3,Vita)>F2nd(PS3,Vita) (many custom songs)>X(PS4,Vita) (a lot of good songs but really
small)
-Idolm@sater Cinderella Girls Starlight Stage/ Million Live Theater Days
>Oh hey, gatcha games. Except you don't really need to pay attention to it if you don't want to
>Pretty good mobile rhythm games with cute idols and music
-Persona Dancing Games (PS4,Vita)
>If you like persona(or at least the music) they're pretty fun and you can fast forward through the story if
you don't care about it

Misc:

-Touhou series
>If you have any interest in bullet hells play Touhou
>6 (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) is the first "modern" style game
-Fate/Extella
>Musou games with fate characters
>Technically sequels to Fate/Extra, but wouldn't recommend it because its combat it literally rock, paper,
scissors

That's all I can think of at the moment, but could probably be updated in the future
