Its not piracy's fault really i'd say its more of the fault of the economical status of Japan since they are still in a recession exacerbated by a pandemic.

Various problems have been plaguing the anime industry for years now, especially as far as treatment and compensation of animators goes. Naturally, the consequences of the pandemic and litany of shutdowns as added factors are going to negatively impact the industry even further.

If anything, I'm surprised the percentage loss isn't remarkably lower than the 1.8% figure provided. I guess it goes to show that being stuck at home with little to do otherwise does have a positive effect and has potentially mitigated the damage.

I wouldn't even consider piracy as a factor considering that's just copium from the industry and copyright holders trying to point fingers towards everyone but themselves.
