NISA Responds to Claims of Changing “Sexist Japanese Jokes” to be “Culturally Appropriate”

女子力

Context: Juna is a Tomboy

Bean-a-Reano
CS3mo (2).jpg
CS3mo (4).jpg

Opinion: Millium is more cringe in the English Version

[Oni-Ka]
CS3 (8).jpg

Note: Later in the game it is correctly translated as "Ogre"
CS3On.png

McFirebro: 火焔のお兄さん
CS3mo (3).jpg
CS3mo (1).jpg

Japanese:
火焔のお兄さん (Kaen no Onii-san) [Roughly: Flames guy/Mister flames]
Localization: The localizors took only "Mc" from the "referenced" person's name to make a McFunny.

Randy兄
CS3en (2).png

Note: 兄/Nii (Kanji for older brother)

イカした姉さん [Ikashita Nee-san]
CS3 (3).jpg

Japanese: Comments on her appearance
Localization: Comments on her personality

Lost in Translation:

CS3mo (6).jpg
CS3mo (9).jpg
CS3mo (12).jpg

Japanese: ユウ/Yuubou (Boyish Nickname) & Randy-senpai
Localization: Junie (Just a nickname) & Randy
Yuuna's JP Nickname: Yuuna is a tomboy so Randy gave her a boyish nickname. It is similar to what Ryuzu calls Garfiel in Re:Zero [ガー坊/Gaーbou]

-San
CS3Ne (3).jpg

Opinion:
Localization should've at least added Mr.

Senpai

Master
CS3Ma (2).jpg
CS3Ma (1).jpg

Note: The trio use マスター/Mastaー", while other characters use 主/aruji, both are translated as "lord"
Kinda lame imo

色っぽい
CS3La (5).jpg

Opinion: [Intimate could mean A/B/C] [Erotic only means C]
If it is direct, then don't turn it into an implication

色っぽい again
CS3Te (3).jpg

Note: "Erotic" is untranslated

Tsundere Again
CS3Te (4).jpg

Opinion: Localizors will put Tsundere's entire definition in the text box before even just considering leaving it as is.

大人っぽい下着
CS3Und.jpg

CS3Sh (8).jpg
<-For Context

小娘揃って
CS3Lass.jpg

Opinion: I think the localization is using gender neutral language, while JP Celine is criticizing them for being noisy/chatty "girls".

ゆるふわヘアーのお嬢様
CS3Se .jpg

Opinion: Localizors maybe had a problem with "You'd look like a proper lady, as long as you're quiet"

朝から晩まで客の相手して
CS3Ni (12).jpg

Context: [Party is in a red light district town] [Nun is Ash's acquaintance]
Note: Ash is teasing her by making her church services sound like prostitution.
In the localization she still respond with "why do you have to say it like that" despite Ash not saying it inappropriately like in the Japanese version.

兄さん (Spoiler)
CS3Ni (1).jpg
CS3Ni (2).jpg

Context: Rean "accidentally" runs into a private conversation where Claire refers to Major Mikhail(ミハイル) as "Nii-san". She later explains their relationship to Rean.
Note: Calling him "Nii-san" shows that they are as close as family, while in the localization it shows that they are on first name basis.
Opinion: Rean being surprised to hear "Nii-san" is not the same as being surprised to hear "Micheal", its a lame change.

肌の色
CS3en (17).jpg

Context: Gaius's skin color

女郎蜘蛛
CS3en (20).jpg

Note: Jorōgumo is a spider youkai that takes the shape of a beautiful woman to deceive men and eat them.
More Context:
Ash calls Musse a Jorōgumo during the first class they have with class-7 (it was localized to Harpy)
Second time is when they visited Mussee's home, which Ash called "Jorōgumo's nest" (it was translated as "Spider's nest")
Opinion: And now we're back to Harpy, which I think does not accurately fit the context.

LoIi -> Tiny form
CS3en (15).jpg

Japanese: Rorii nanomo warukunai jaro?
Opinion: Let the LoIibabā say the word !

女子どもに負けてんじゃねよ
CS3Ro (1).jpg

Note: "Joshi domo ni maketenja neeyo" is untranslated.
Opinion: We can't have that line in current year

Men's Gaze
FG3J23eXIAIqsNF.jpg

私を一晩好きにしたい
CS3bl (4).jpg

Japanese: Watashi o hitoban skinishtai
Localization: A romantic night under the stars

男冥利に尽きる
CS3bl (5).jpg

Note: 男冥利に尽きる: [Dif: The best blessing someone who is born male can have] (being popular with women)
Context: Rean's Harem
Opinion: localizors keep changing interesting lines with generic ones. Was this line "too straight" for western localization?

Dood
CS3Do (2).jpg
CS3Do (3).jpg
CS3Do (4).jpg
CS3Do (1).jpg

Note: This characters ends his sentences with ッス, so Nisa localizers turned him into a Prinny.
["Gobta" from "Slime datta ken" is an example of a character that speaks in this kind of way, its not a Prinny exclusive thing]

(Slowly Updating...)
Currently playing the JP version, so Im going to post some of the differences I find.

Sorry if there are any mistakes, I'm not a professional translator
It's not as egregious as I thought but it's still kinda bad considering that the localization team thought it some of the jokes were inappropriate and had to be changed:hana-disgust:. And somehow some people thought it was fine the way they translated it (like Appabend who was reaaaaaally trying to reach his arguments).

I'm sad, I wanted to play the whole series, and I still need to finish the first one.
This looks like a mix of appealing to a broader audience that doesn't know about anime culture (And who the hell plays that game...?), toning down of sexual innuendos (I see that as the equivalent of changing a French kiss to hand shaking. If they did that for a classic, they'd be burned by an unhappy press, but for videogames, it's fine.), and just weird choices ("Big brudder" was such a good idea.).
I hope it can be re-translated by fans, I hate playing RPGs in Japanese, they make my head hurt as I read like a snail on its death bed.

I think on steam released a mini-mod that changes some of the dialog to be more accurate to jp version I think.

Bumping this with my question.

I have not played any of the trails games and was thinking of starting with coldsteel 1. Is the translation/localization for Coldsteel 1 as bad or worse as than this one or is it a Neptunia Re;Birth situation where the first game has a fine translation and the other two have awful translations? Asking out of genuine curiosity.

1&2 were localized by XSEED, while 3 was done by NISA and few members that worked on 1&2.
I played 1&2 a few years ago in english, so I don't know about the quality of its localization.
But generally, the further a game is from "current year" the better the localization. So I'd blindly say that 1&2 probably have a better localization, but I didn't check them so I cant say for sure.
If it helps, this scene from 2 was translated accurately

That's all I can say about it, hope someone else can provide a more full answer.

So that's kinda weird but didn't TOTCS 3 received a fan-patch on steam that re-translates some of the cringe-lines to be more accurate with JP-version?

I don't know, I just did a quick search and didn't find it. If it exists, feel free to post it.

Will never understand why translators are so fucking averse to just writing tsundere in weeb games. Everyone knows the trope, just accept it as a loan word already you fucking nuggets.

I love how a butch of translators and localization fans are losing their shit over this post

just one example but the Qts on Shizu's tweet are filled with them

the twitter locolizors fear the schizo forum poster

it's funny how they ignore all the examples in this thread that show the localizers are directly changing the meaning and context in some texts to go after a few specific examples and make "heh weeb" posts about. classic deflection

because your taking the power of translation from them, because only them the chosen few than read-write & speak Japanese.
they are the arbiters of whats gets translated.
so you weebs need to shut the fuck up and consume product, otherwise, we just won't translate.
how will you get your Japanese media then lol?

Strange. I remember that Trials of Cold Steel 3 had a fan-made mod that made some of the lines closer to the JP version.
EDIT:
Ok I found the thing, don't know how better it is, never used it before. It seems it is still not completely translated.

got into an argument with one of them after I Qted them, if you want to enjoy some fine schizo posting links here

what started as me making the point that them going "well just learn Japanese Chud" is nothing but a deflection form the valid criticism being levelled at these localizers turns into some crazy bullshit about how peoples in the west's idea of what lolis and lolicon is coming primarily from the book and film lolita and not in fact form the internet convocations on the topic

it's clear they are not sending their best. considering they are fine tossing potshots at people over this thread and don't have the balls to come in here and argue against it themselves
