Ender Lilies: Quites of the Knights was localized into all languages by Impetus, and while there isn't much censorship, it is absolutely riddled with omissions of detail, inconsistency (especially regarding names) and general mistranslations, either due misunderstanding the Japanese, or misunderstanding the game world​

Action 1​

祈り / Prayer​

Japanese:

Prayer

When HP is low: (L1)

Restores HP
The amulet resonates with the White Priestess' prayer, reactivating the/her protective barrier.

The Japanese description is clearly separated into two parts:

• What the Action does in gameplay terms (restores HP)
• What it does from a lore perspective (reactivates barrier through prayer)

restoring HP = reactivating the barrier
The English just threw both of them together into one sentence
restoring HP and (re)activating the barrier

This also becomes apparent when looking at the HP upgrades: they are fragments of the amulet, which strengthen her barrier (=increase HP)

Action 4​

水泳 / Swim​

There's nothing here about holding her breath.

Action 6:​

守り人の跳躍 / Guardian's Leap​

Japanese:

Guardian's Leap

While on ground: ( X -> X )

With the tainted wing of Guardian Siegrid, it becomes possible to leap again while in midair.

The Japanese clearly says 片翼 which means "one wing/single wing", so I don't know why the english just defaulted to plural.

But the more important mistake here is the button prompt. You double jump by pressing X in the air, but the Japanese prompt says "While on ground: ( X -> X )". This was changed to "While airborne ( X -> X )"
You double jump by pressing X while airborne. The Japanese expresses this in a weird way by telling you to press X twice on the ground, however, by attempting to fix it the English just made it nonsense, as they changed the condition but left the inputs the same. It is now telling you to press X twice while airborne, which is obviously not correct.

Action 7​

巨人の鉄槌 / Giant's Hammer​

Keeping this one short, it's really just missing this last part:
より厚い肉腫の地面も壊すことができる
"can also break thicker pustulant ground"

Action 8​

魔女の泡沫 / Witch's Bubble​

黒の魔女イレイェンの加護により = through the (divine) protection of the Black Witch Eleine
The English translated 加護 as "black magic". But more importantly, they translated 黒の魔女 as Dark Witch here, but in other instances, they correctly call her Black Witch. (In Relic 23, they call her Black Witch, in Skill 6, she is called Dark Witch again. No consistency)
There is also no talk of Blighted waters in the Japanese, it simply allows you to move underwater.

Action 12​

ダッシュ / Dash​

Japanese:

Dash

( <- / -> ) + Hold R2

Latch onto Knight Captain Julius after a dodge, allowing swift movement.

The English button prompt is wrong. You don't even have to press a direction button (which is why it's in parentheses), let alone hold it. You only have to hold R2.

Furthermore, Julius doesn't grab hold of you, you latch onto him as you can clearly tell by the illustration. They got the meaning of つかまる wrong, which can mean "to be caught", but in this case it's clear that it's the other way around.

Action 14​

狂い騎士の血爪 / Bloody Knight's Claws​

The correct translation of the name 狂い騎士の血爪 would be "Mad Knight's Bloody Claws". For some reason they left out "mad" part (despite mentioning it in the description) and put "bloody" in front of "knight".

The button prompt is missing 空中時 (while airborne).

Relic 1​

汚れた銀のロザリオ / Soiled Prayer Beads​

Japanese:

Soiled Silver Rosary

Slightly increases maximum HP

A rosary worn by the White Priestess' Guardian.

In order to to protect the White Priestess, they extensively train in the underground church, of which one gets chosen to become the Guardian.

While prayer beads is a synonym for rosary, there is just no good reason to change it, especially when they correctly left it as rosary down below. Also left out the "silver" part.

And the last part of the description is just describing the general process, not someone specific who was "chosen to be her protector".

Relic 4​

ひび割れた魔石 / Cracked Familiar Stone​

Japanese:

Cracked Magic Stone

Reduces damage received from enemies

A magic stone which amplifies Barrier Magic
Though now cracked and outlived its usefulness, the magic stone is still tinged with magic power, which had been imbued/charged by a witch for a long time.

I don't see this being used to summon a familiar, just utterly strange choice for the name.

The "descendants of giants" part is completely made up.

古の竜の爪 / Ancient Dragon Claw​

The dragon’s mountain lies near the Blighted Land, and it is said that only the knights of the fortress ever catch sight of it.

It's missing the detail of being close to the Blighted Land.

Engraved with a lotus flower and a sword — symbols of the nation — the emblem is carried close to the hearts of the undying knights and is tainted with Blight.

Said to have been found in the Blighted Land, it appears to be an artifact from before the founding of Land's End.

Missing the same line as the previous ring about the Knight deciphering the text
"Unearthed from Blighted muck" is made up, 穢土の地 is referring to a specific place which is mentioned multiple times (see Relic 8 for example), and nowhere does it say unearthed, it was simply found there.

白巫女の人形 / Priestess' Doll​

A doll made by a girl living in Land's End.
It is said to have been created in honor of the White Priestess of the Fount, who saved the nation during the fortress defense battle.

"made for the White Priestess" makes it sound like it was a gift for her, but nowhere does it explicitly say that.

Relic 21​

穢れなき泉の聖水 / Holy Spring Water​

Pure Holy Spring Water

Increases the amount healed by the Healing Prayer

A bottle filled with water drawn from a remote spring where the White Priestess of the Fount was born.
It is said that the White Priestess receives her name from the place of her birth, as chosen by the previous White Priestess.

The last line is mistranslated.

魔糸のアンクレット / Spellbound Anklet​

Magic Thread Anklet

Slightly increases movement and dashing speed

A magical tool worn around the ankle, woven from numerous strands of enchanted thread.
It was prepared by the Black Witch for the White Priestess of the Fount, who had difficulty walking due to the effects of the Blight.

Here they correctly call her Black Witch, but in Action 8 and Skill 6 they call her Dark Witch.

Relic 24​

極彩色の羽飾り / Vibrant Plume​

Japanese:

Slightly increases jump height

A special feather ornament given by Guardian Silva to her beloved younger sister.
This magical tool, requested of a sorcerer, is said to stir up wind.
The sister who received it never wore it even once.

"doting sister" would mean Silva's sister is the one doing the doting, but it is clearly the other way around, as evidenced by Skill 3 and TIPS 31.
It also wasn't simply crafted by a sorcerer, Silva requested it to be made.

Relic 25​

蝕む魔女の書 / Ruined Witch's Book​

Japanese:

Ruined Witch's Book

Increases movement speed in and on water

A grimoire imbued with the power of a witch, containing writings on barrier magic.
Though the flesh growth of the Blight has spread even to the book, eating away at it, the power it holds remains undiminished.

The book specifically contains writings on barrier magic, not just "all manner of witchcraft", which explains why it lets you move faster underwater, as it is the same magic used in Action 8 (Witch's Bubble).

Relic 30​

リコリースの指輪 / Ricorus' Ring​

Japanese:

Ricorus’ Ring

Increases the SP Gauge by 1

"The priestess dances with spirits upon the battlefield — Ricorus the Ripper."

A ring engraved with ancient script deciphered by the Black-Clad Knight.
It was found as a relic of war following the downfall of the demonic race.
Even after spending a long time steeped in the Blight, it shows no sign of decay.

Once again completely missing the deciphering line like in Relic 15 and 16.
魔の種族 was translated as "Ancients" here, but the Ancients in the Japanese are 古き民. I myself am not sure who 魔の種族 is referring to, and my translation is probably not the best here, but it is definitely not the Ancients, at least not directly. Perhaps it was meant as a derogatory name for them, but then it should also be translated as such.
The last line was simply shortened to "Resistant to rust", which makes it sound like it's stainless steel or something, instead of expressing its mystical nature.

Relic 32​

かつて失ったモノ / Lost Heirloom​

Japanese:

Something Once Lost

Allows the recollection of one's unblighted form

A hair ornament made from a white flower, received from the White Priestess of the Fount.
After the White Priestess of the Fount got immobilized due to the Blight, she was no longer able to meet with the other priestesses—
but it is said she continued to think of them and sent them handmade ornaments.

The モノ part of the item name being written in katakana is very significant. Rather than just a lost object, it is most likely referring to the lost purity of the White Priestess, which is also in line with the effect of the item (recollection of her unblighted/undefiled form) "Heirloom" is completely made up and unfitting.

The last sentence of the English is just plain confusing to me - I have no idea what the "in her stead" is supposed to mean. Who is "her"?

Relic 33​

穢れの幻影 / Blighted Phantom​

Japanese:

Phantom of Blight

Shows the White Priestess in her fully Blighted form

Whether from the past or the future, it shows the White Priestess consumed by Blight.
The Blight has crystallized into a form reminiscent of tears.

I don't know where this sudden poem-like writing came from

Relic 34​

フリーティアの指輪 / Fretia's Ring​

Japanese:

Frietia's Ring

Allows the use of Parry by pressing R2 while equipped
Allows the repelling and nullifying of an incoming attack by pressing R2 at the right moment

A ring worn by the White Priestess of the Fount.
The third to bear the title, this White Priestess was especially resistant to the effects of the Blight compared to those before her, and brought salvation to many Blighted.

She is not the third "of the Fount", just the third White Priestess. They all have different titles (of the Dawn, of the Wind, of the Fount).
"allowing her to bestow salvation upon its sufferes" makes it sound like she was the only one capable of purification, which is not true. She was simply able to purify more than the others due to her resistance.

Skills / Spirits​

Skill 1​

黒衣の騎士 / Umbral Knight​

Japanese:

Black-Clad Knight

Performs a series of consecutive attacks with a sword.
By inputting left or right in addition, it is also possible to attack while advancing forward.

A black-clad knight who had been in a long slumber deep underground.
An untainted spirit continuing to maintain consciousness.

They missed the point of the skill description

They left out the "deep underground" part, instead calling the slumber deep.
"Though naught but a Blighted Spirit" is straight up wrong - the Japanese is saying that the spirit/soul is not being corrupted/Blighted.
"they still retain some semblance of who they once were" it becomes very clear later that the knight is indeed male, and while the Japanese doesn't explicitly state it here in this description (because it doesn't have to), defaulting to singular they when talking about a knight paints a very clear picture of the translators.

Skill 3​

守り人シルヴァ / Guardian Silva​

Japanese:

Guardian Silva

Performs consecutive attacks with a hammer.
Can be charged by holding the input.
A charged attack deals heavy damage over a wider area.

Silva became a guardian to protect her beloved younger sister, taking on the great role of guarding the White Priestess of the Fount,
even while knowing that it would lead to being shunned by her sister.

This makes it clear that Silva is the one doting on her sister, so Relic 24 got it wrong
And not only did becoming a Guardian separate them, the Japanese clearly says she was shunned (疎まれる) by her sister. This is because her sister was also hoping to become the Guardian of the White Priestess (See TIPS 29)

Skill 6​

黒の魔女イレイェン / Dark Witch Eleine​

Japanese:

Black Witch Eleine

Performs ranged attacks using magic projectiles.
The projectiles slightly home in toward enemies in front.

Born and raised in the Coven, Eleine was praised as a prodigy magician from a young age.
At a time when she was about to be crushed by loneliness and the expectations around her, she met a girl known as the White Priestess of the Fount.

Couple things here
She is called Dark Witch again, when in Relic 23 they correctly called her Black Witch, making it wrong AND inconsistent.
Speaking of inconsistent, 魔術協会 is always translated as (the) Coven, and while that translation choice itself isn't the best in my opinion, they wrote "in a coven of witches" here instead of treating it as a name (the Coven). It isn't just some random coven, it is THE 魔術協会. See TIPS 10

Skill 9​

守り人シーグリッド / Guardian Siegrid​

Japanese:

Guardian Siegrid

Swings an iron ball to attack surrounding enemies
Sub-skills have a cooldown time and limited number of uses, but can be activated together with other skills

Siegrid awaited the enemy in the church to protect the White Priestess Lily, but the never-ending battle caused her to be consumed by madness.

I have no idea what a "sept" is supposed to be. 聖堂 is pretty clear in its meaning, and I could not find a definition for "sept" that's even remotely close.

Skill 21​

なりそこないの罪人 / Incompetent Sinner​

Japanese:

Failed Sinner

Performs a charge attack together with the summoned Failed Sinner

A sinner confined in a room of the underground laboratory.
Once a curious and adventurous man, he secretly left the kingdom and journeyed through the Blighted Domain, to which entry is forbidden.
When later discovered by the fortress knights, he had already become a Blighted — but remained conscious and did not become feral.

1. "forbidden Verboten Domain" sounds incredibly dumb, as it means "forbidden Forbidden Domain"

2. That's not even where he went. He went to the Blighted Domain/Lands. They got two locations mixed up here:

• 禁じられた領域 (sometimes shortened to 禁域 , EN: Verboten Domain) which lies underground, below 魔女たちの森 / Witch's Thicket and 地下牢獄 / Stockade (check the maps below as well as Skill 22)
• 穢土の領域 (sometimes 穢土の地, EN: Blighted Domain/Blighted Lands), which lies outside of the country ("密かに国を出て | secretly left the kingdom" - this part is missing in the English)

As mentioned in the Japanese, he was found by the fortress knights, which lies at the eastern end of the country. This is mentioned multiple times in other notes:

Skill 22​

禁域の戦士 / Verboten Champion​

Japanese:

Warrior of the Forbidden Domain

Leaps together with the Warrior of the Forbidden Domain to attack airborne enemies

The former knight, who was contracted the Blight while fighting the Blighted, had a reason he absolutely had to return to being human.
Escaping the underground prison, he eventually reached the Forbidden Domain — Faden’s underground laboratory.

The name "Verboten Champion" is a really weird choice. I get wanting to shorten it, but "Warrior" to "Champion" is a pointless change, and calling him "Verboten" makes it sound like committed some great crime or something
"able to cling to his humanity" is way too liberal of a translation. He specifically wanted to return to being a normal human, which is why he headed to the laboratory
And once again, no consistency in names. Here they call it "Verboten Quarter" for some reason, when it is the same 禁じられた領域 as always in Japanese.
This Skill description also once more confirms the location of the Forbidden Domain/Verboten Domain

Skill 23​

崖の村の村長 / Cliffside Hamlet Elder​

Japanese:

Cliffside Village Chief

Attacks by leaping in an arc with an bloated body, crushing the surroundings upon landing

Struck by the Rain of Death, the chief’s body rotted, melted, and mutated — eventually fusing with cattle.

"Their bloated body" - "fusing him with his cattle"
Unless "their" is referring to both the Chief and his cattle (it shouldn't, considering they fused into one being), this is another case of singular they, immediately followed by "him" and "his".

イレイェンの手紙 / Eleine's Letter​

It is something I give to all the White Priestesses, and it is imbued with protective magic.

Even if the barrier is broken, it can be restored, but it is something that only the White Priestess can manage.

TIPS 9​

正導教徒の手記 / True Believer's Note​

In the English, they call the religion centered around the White Priestess "White Parish". While not necessarily a bad name, the White Parish is a location, not the name of the entire religion. In Japanese it is called 白教, so a much more fitting name would be "White Faith" or perhaps "The White Way". It is not mentioned in this note, but the White Parish is 白教区/白の教区. See TIPS 18

TIPS 10​

魔術協会の手引き / Coven Handbook​

Japanese:

Only magicians are permitted entry.
It is a place where seekers of deeper knowledge and magic gather.

This is supposed to be a handbook. I don't know why they did away with the formatting.
Also note that "Magic Association" is just a name I came up with on the fly, no doubt there are better choices. In the English it's called (The) Coven

禁書の切れ端 / Forbidden Text Scrap​

Text Scrap of a Forbidden Book

Magic that creates or alters life has been attempted in various forms — the creation of artificial lifeforms.

By guiding the soul, the source of power, into the body of an infant, it is thought that the consciousness controlling the body remains that of the infant, while the power can be inherited.

The English is mostly fine, but at the end there is this weird cut-off line "The Creation of Sentient Rock Fo-" that is not present anywhere in the Japanese.

The White Way, Chapter 2

The soldiers who protected the kingdom stood against the Blighted, but no matter how many times the Blighted were struck down, they rose again and could not be killed.

The one who protected the kingdom from the Blighted was a lone woman with golden hair, clad in white robes.

When the woman offered her prayers, the blight was purified, and the Blighted ceased their movement.

Witnessing her divine presence, the people called the woman the “White Priestess.”

The White Faith has two main bases: the White Parish and the underground training grounds within the Catacombs.

Guardian candidates undergo years of training in the underground facility to gain the strength and spirit worthy of protecting the White Priestess.

Guardian candidates are selected from among the followers of the White Faith, and it is said that only up to ten elite individuals are chosen to serve as the direct protectors of the White Priestess.

Here their fuck up in naming the religion becomes most apparent. Both the religion itself as well as the parish is mentioned in the Japanese here.
白教 = White Faith
白の教区 = White Parish
That's why they had to reword the first line here so much.

TIPS 19​

創設の証 / Proof of Founding​

A magical research organization established to oppose the Blighted, lead by the mage Faden, the foremost expert in Blighted research.

Once again, they did away with any and all formatting for some reason.
The English doesn't mention the last line about investigating the Forbidden Domain, instead replacing it with "no conduct is considered forbidden".

There was something strange about knights and soldiers at the Twin Fortresses.
Even after being cut down, they got back up, unaffected by the Blight.
They were just like the Blighted themselves.

But thinking that, aside from the White Priestess and me, everyone there might have been a Blighted — it terrified me.

Siegrid, I’m sorry.
I took the position of Guardian from you to protect you.

But in the end, I wasn’t suited to be a Guardian at all.

The main problem here is the line "I became a Guardian to protect you". The Japanese uses the verb 奪う - to take (by force); to take away; to snatch; to steal
Siegrid yearned for the Guardian position, which is why Silva snatching it away caused her to be shunned by Siegrid (See Skill 3)

TIPS 31​

書きかけの手記の紙片 / Unfinished Note​

I am to accompany the White Priestess into the Forbidden Domain.

Is there really any method to dispel the blight other than purification?

In the Japanese, it is clearly an unfinished note, as can be seen by the last line.
"As long as you are safe Siegrid, that's enough..." is a finished thought, even if it has an ellipsis at the end. The sudden cutoff is more evident in the Japanese.

This is also more evidence of the clear infatuation, one might even say obsession, from Silva towards Siegrid. Not the other way around as implied in Relic 24.

TIPS 37​

"are here for" could mean they all came here of their own accord, especially when considering the next line
黒の魔女が志願したそう = it seems the Black Witch volunteered
"Why'd they volunteer?" implies all of the sorcerers (or even all of the aforementioned groups) volunteered, whereas the Black Witch is singled out in the Japanese - she isn't even mentioned in the English!
This whole thing is also stated with low confidence in Japanese; it might just be hearsay. The English makes it sound like a fact.
魔術協会の変わり者の考えることはわからん = I don't know what those oddballs of the Magic Association are thinking.
In the Japanese, we can infer that only the Black Witch volunteered; we don't know for sure about the other sorcerers, but the author of this note lumps her in with the rest of them when she could in fact be an outlier. The English doesn't even mention her, so one can only assume they are all oddballs who volunteered for some reason.

The Japanese gradually shifts from using Kanji to only using hiragana to convey the mental decline of the author. This is difficult to achieve in English of course, but they could have at the very least kept the short and simple sentences in order to convey the same feeling.

Once again they mixed up the locations, just like in Skill 21, calling 穢土の領域 the "Verboten Domain", when it should be "Blighted Domain"

不死の契約について / The Deathless Pact​

Japanese:

Ancient arts that deal with the soul are permitted only to high-ranking priestesses.
When a warrior of the Ancients offers their soul to a priestess, they forsake the flesh and become a deathless being.

A seal of the pact is left with the priestess and passed down the bloodline until the lineage ends.

The warrior shall remain undying for as long as the pact is upheld.

The English fails to mention that there is a physical seal left on the priestess. It does mention a seal, but only in a loose way ("The pact is then sealed...")
This is the same seal/mark mentioned here in Relic 22


and seen here in the opening cutscene:

The second line was changed to "I can hardly believe it, yet here you are, alive and well".

The English got the tenses all wrong

イレイェンの記憶 / Eleine's Memories​

Japanese:

It will all be ruined...
I absolutely cannot let that happen

I don't even know what the English is talking about here

シルヴァの記憶 / Silva's Memories​

Japanese:

The source of the Blight overflowed, and many humans were consumed.
The followers of the underground church, the guardians — all of them...
They became Blighted.

This takes place underground, and the Blight overflows from below them.




Japanese:

It feels like this isn’t my own body anymore, as if something unknown is driving me.
The elixir... that the sorcerers made me drink...
They said it was to save the White Priestess.

The English is way too abstract and liberal

ウルヴの記憶 / Ulv's Memories​

Japanese:

We defeated the horde of the Blighted and protected the kingdom, but not a single one of us rejoices.
We who now bear immortal bodies... are no different from the Blighted.

"None were left to thank us" sounds like everyone else in the Kingdom died. How does that make sense if they managed to protect it?
They themselves didn't rejoice after winning the battle because they are no longer human.

ヘニールの記憶 / Hoenir's Memories​

Japanese:

As Blight overflowed from beneath and swallowed all,
I held in my arms the one I had thought to be the most distant — the White Priestess — and made for the surface.
Chased by the Blighted, the place we finally reached was...
Ironically, the execution grounds, which were all too familiar to me.

She was there, deep underground, a place where only Executioners and heretical sorcerers would set foot...
I will not forget...
— she, who saved my companions by taking upon herself even the Blight of us Executioners —
Her final words, asking us to save the White Priestess...
That was the one and only wish of someone who bore the Blight, endured the pain, and devoted herself to this kingdom.

Though our roles differ, we too have devoted ourselves to this kingdom.
Therefore, we must protect her wish.
We must not allow it to be trampled.

The translators misunderstood the entire second half of the cutscene, thinking it was what she (the White Priestess of the Fount) said
白巫女を助けてほしいと最後に言った、その言葉…… — The first half of this line is entirely untranslated, even though that is the whole quote ("Save the White Priestess")
Instead, they made everything after this line the quote, when that is actually Hoenir talking
