Grabber

Thread Description
Seamlessly download, preserve, and store artwork from boorus

Jahy

varishangout.com
Having been inspired by @DarkMahesvara and his well-written threads and posts regarding free and open-source software, I would like to do the same for ones I use quite often. In this thread, I will discuss Grabber, my preferred tool for viewing and downloading from boorus. Given that many of us here enjoy finding and sharing artwork, I hope this is a relevant find for some of you.

Overview
Grabber is a tool that allows users to visit and search a variety of sources for images, typically boorus or imageboards, and download them according to options established by the user.

Many of the worthwhile sources included with Grabber include but are not limited to Danbooru, Gelbooru, Safebooru, Rule34.xxx, Pixiv, yande.re, Konachan, nhentai, and even e-hentai.org.

Relevant Information

Who does this help?
If you're like me, you probably save a lot of files locally, and doing so can be a pain in the ass because ultimately you'll want to sort and organize everything. Grabber makes this very easy by allowing you to make use of the tagging system frequently used on many booru websites.

The disadvantage of this, of course, is that you are ultimately relying upon the tags for a given piece of art to be legitimate. For anyone who has browsed boorus frequently, you know this isn't necessarily a given. That being said, this is not a flaw of the program but rather a circumstance of its target environments.

What is special about it?
Grabber allows you to set, choose, and modify a variety of options that make it more worthwhile to use instead of visiting boorus directly. They include but are not limited to the following:
  • Mass downloading: Allows the user to download images either one at a time, pages at a time, tags at a time, or entire searches at a time
  • Ignore and blacklist tags: Bypassing the need to manually exclude cuck tags from your search
  • User authentication: For certain websites (such as Gelbooru) that require you to log in before being allowed to see certain artwork. *wink wink nudge nudge*
The most remarkable feature to me is the ability to save files according to a specified naming scheme established by you. My personal format is the following: "%copyright%\[%artist%] %character% %md5:maxlength=5< ("chain of tags")>"

In essence, this allows me to save files pre-sorted into folders created according to the franchise of origin and then naming the file by displaying the artist, the character(s) involved, a shortened version of the file's MD5 hash, and a chain of tags I have specified that would appear they were tagged on the art. As an example, the following image is retrieved from Gelbooru:

[pumpkinspicelatte] shuten douji (fate) e258f (loli).jpg

According to my settings as stated above, it is saved as "[pumpkinspicelatte] shuten douji (fate) e258f (loli).jpg" in a folder entitled "fate grand order+fate (series)".

Keep in mind that this is just my format and that you can customize your filename however you wish by utilizing their comprehensive token-based filenaming scheme.

Conclusion
Grabber is easily one of the best open-source programs I've ever used and one I use almost daily. It is perfect for fellow art curators such as myself who want an easy and streamlined way to find, save, and organize their artwork. There are many, many other features I did not mention here in the post as I only wanted to touch on the essentials; if you want to know more, please either check out the documentation or try it for yourself!

Holy shit it's actually available for Mac? That's a relief considering I failed to get Wine working. But this will definitely be very useful in expanding my waifu pics collection.

Absolutely! I think I might work on getting a template down and doing this more often. I'd love to perhaps do waifu2x next since that's another art-based software I use very frequently.

I understand wanting to curate individually, and I didn't mean to imply if I did that you couldn't do that as well in Grabber. It's very useful at batch downloads, but you can save individual pictures just as easily while also retaining the advantages of the naming and organization.

I hope it works out for you! I have not used the Mac version, so I can't speak towards it being any good or without bugs, but they do typically do very well by the Windows version.

Any effort is always worth it for the waifus.

After playing around with it, it does work good albeit with a few bugs.

I've not heard of this one but over the last while I've bet setting up an hydurs http://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/

maybe ill work on a thread about it. but it lets you basically tag and view your files like you would a broou. as well as download form URLs and hash to collect tags form broous and apply them right to your files

it's shockingly powerful. but can be a bit intimidating at first. but worth the look imo

Whoa, that's a lot to unpack. If I'm not mistaken, this allows you to operate a de facto booru on your own device, which would be extremely convenient as far as organization goes. I could see myself making good use of this, especially if I were to get a local NAS going.

I wonder how compatible it would be with Grabber or if it's simply the next stage of evolution. Would really need to see how it handles naming files since I wouldn't want everything solely reliant on the software itself.

sadly I'm in the process of migrating my database to my new 1tb SSD so cant open it to show you

but yea it works like a local booru. but more. you can hook it up to the net and local network to get to it from other devices or have other users connect to it. you can use it to watch and download new posts with tags. it pulls all tag metadata from where ever you get it from. you can look up files Md5 hash code to pull tags for things you already have. you can download anything from a URL by just draging the URL right into the client along with its tags and metadata

you can get stuff right from places like pixiv as well. pulling the tags form there as well as linking right to the OG post

I can't open it but have some caps form when I was showing it off to someone else

unknown (2).png

here you can see tags pulled from gel on the left. the "rating" you can set up, I use stars, and a list of sources pulled from the broous metadata

all of this is editable and confugurble manually as well

close up of sources

at first it took some time to get a handle on everything and its worth reading the help on the site very throghy as there is alot to unpack and work on. it allso can do duplacate checking for you with a manural sorter

like im still lerning just how based this is but its taken me a good mouth to get shit imported and seting shit up. its wild

I once said that people that obsess over organization so much that they'd copy a whole site's structure are insane.
Well, I might become insane myself, fucking hell, what time does to you.

Watching that its mentioned Hydrus too in the thread i want to give a form to use Grabber to also grab the tags from the booru-site while donwloading the images for easy import later to Hydrus.

It's relatively simple:
-Go to "Tools" > Options (or using ctrl+p)
-Then go "Saves" > "Separate Log Files"
sRx6HYl.png
After this, its only add one separete log file, with the name that you want, Location type "suffix", then the suffix ".txt", finally the text file content its the format for the tags to be compatible with the base hydrus.

rating:%rating%

series:%copyright:unsafe,separator=\nseries:%

creator:%artist:unsafe,separator=\ncreator:%

%general:unsafe,separator=\n%

%species:includenamespace,unsafe,separator=\n%

%character:includenamespace,unsafe,separator=\n%

%faults:includenamespace,unsafe,separator=\n%
6MyCRTZ.png

And thats all, after that it is going to give you a txt with all the tags.
JsstARf.png
To import it to Hydrus at the moment of importing the images there is an option to add tags, there is the option for "add tags from .txt file" or something, click on there and all the tags are imported directly to Hydrus. Right now i dont have hydrus installed because of low storage in my hdd, so i can't give screenshots for the process on Hydrus, sorry.:a-disgust:

I know that Hydrus pretty much its very customizable, and you could use other metod (like searching in-app for the md5 for the tags or downloading the images from the downloader in Hydrus), but this method its my prefered because I like to use Grabber for searching images, I feel more "control" than Hydrus in regards to downloading images from boorus.

Aside that... I really love Grabber a lot, glad to see it here!:yukari-salute:

Wow, thank you very much! I was hoping there would be a way to use both in tandem, as mentioned previously Grabber has done incredibly well by me. After reading all of this, I am giving serious consideration to bulking up my external store system and perhaps even going for that NAS. I will bookmark this post for later use.

Much appreciated, fellow curator of culture. :nep-happy:
