Hideaki Anno refuses to create media for global audiences

Legendary director Hideaki Anno, of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame, recently spoke in an interview about his thoughts on creating anime for a global audience - and he's not interested whatsoever. Here are some quotes:​

'My stance is simply – it first needs to be a work that will be well received and found interesting in Japan, but if by any chance people overseas also found it interesting, I’d be grateful for that.'

'Works that are made through a Japanese thought process can only be understood in Japanese. Film has both visual and sound elements, so compared to other forms of storytelling, the language barrier is not that . However, lines in the script are still in Japanese, and the drama is achieved through the thoughts and feelings the characters experience in Japanese.'

'I’m sorry, but the audience will have to be the one to adapt [to the narrative's intentions and nuances].'

Big words coming from an anime creator who produced Rebuilt of Evangelion movies to cater to the modern wider audience (his words, not mine) and with said movies toning down the feeling of the old tv series and movies a lot. Also his new studio, studio Khara, made nothing of value, unlike studio trigger that is the true spiritual successor of Gainax but with them being better businessmen.
