When you get even close to that stage you will need to deal with DDoS, users uploading illegal content (especially CP is a problem), getting doxxed, etc.

As for my credentials: Full-Time Webdev for years, used to active in quite a few local forums and saw them die from issues mentioned above.

I can picture ddos attacks and doxxing being a common issue. Is people uploading illegal stuff really a common issue?

I ask cause the only other forums I was part of were the sankaku channel ones and dakkadakka, so Im certainly not knowlegdeable on the topic.

It's not common for most sites, but it can happen when you
  • Get big enough (e.g. 4chan, Twitter, etc. happens once in a while)
  • Some weirdo thinks it's a good way to attack you
  • Pedos see it as a good way to share
So if you want to be the next e.g. Null, then it is a worry you should have. Also you usually have to get rid of it (can be annoying because of cache & temp files) and some places want the affected hardware.
I haven't had it happen to me with a website, but with an old Laptop I bought through a local market place. Had to hand over laptop, let them search if I made backups and in the end never got the money or laptop back. So once again afaik Null owns his own hardware, so depending on where you live you can get really fucked by that.

DDoS: As long as you are not on cloudflares shitlist, you can use them.

Illegal content: You could limit user uploads, but more likely you just have to stay on top of it when happens. But the likelyhood of this part happening is slim until you reach a certain point.

Doxxing: Just be careful and look into ways of hidding your details.
