The more niche your thinking and/or interests are the more annoying people will be in relation to that.
Personally I just stick to stuff I can do solo and chat a bit here and there if someone is willing to have a comfy chat about whatever kind of topic.
Working out regularly, no matter in what way or form, is pretty much a necessity for keeping ones head clear, so even if it is something tiny as long as it is regular it will be helpful.
And in regards to people being combative, the best option is to just let them sperg and to not try and convert them to your own thinking.
If they were willing to properly talk and listen then they would not be combative and annoying to begin with.
