Final Fantasy VII now officially has a commemoration day all to itself on January 31st in Japan, recognized by the Japanese Anniversary Association due to the cultural significance of the title on video games.

The announcement was made this week via Twitter, with FFVII director and FFVII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase posing with the certificate:

Kitase also left a message for fans of Final Fantasy VII:

1/31/1997, the day Final Fantasy VII was released, is an important day not only for the series, but also as the day many of our projects in development were pushed into motion. While being consumed by the wave of evolution in game technology that was enough to make one dizzy, I also remember the dreams of the future that were opened to us on that day. By classifying it as a commemoration day, we wish to continue to keep remembering this feeling going forward as well.
Though Final Fantasy VII Day exists now, it isn’t by any means a public holiday. Rather, the certificate acknowledges that the day is culturally significant in some way, elevating it above fan-celebrated release dates and the like.

The Japan Anniversary Association, which doles out the certificates, was created in order to have an organization that managed these sorts of previously-unofficial commemoration days made by industries or companies for PR purposes, such as “Pocky Day”. In effect, it’s not that different from the Guinness World Records, where money can be paid for the organization to come and recognize a certain record as such.
