I'm wondering if something actually has scared her. She's deleted a bunch of recent tweets, even behind the priv they show the "this tweet has been deleted" message. This includes the this tweet, the persona wokalizer tweet, the "translation is not for you" tweet, among others. I'm sure she's deleted tweets before, but most of the times I've seen over the past few years she's really stuck to her guns and was content just hiding behind blockparty.

I'm probably reading too much into it, but I can at least hope for a little good news.

edit: Does anyone know if she ever put Inukai in her list of published works? It's not there ATM (archive) but I don't know if she just never updated the list or what. I do recall her talking about that utapri movie recently, though. Don't have that tweet in my history though.

That's honestly the most baffling part to me. How are these localizers bragging about changes and details on projects they've worked on, on the internet with their full names in the open ?
I'm a game translator myself (EN->FR though) and this field is RIDDLED with NDAs, "trade secrets" and confidential shit. If I talked about anything and it was traced back to me, I'd get blacklisted to hell and back. The only thing we're allowed to do is just say "yeah I've worked on this game", and even then that's ONLY if we have our name in the credits (which isn't often).

I have no idea how all these people are getting away with, and more importantly RISKING in the first place talking about internal decisions in their jobs just for attention on the internet.

You ever hear the saying "it's not what you know, it's who you know"? Localization is one of those jobs where you can fail upwards by being friends with the right people.

Just a silly thing, but I find it amusing that something Katrina retweeted, that isn't directly related to manga translations, uses the phrase "it can't be helped", which so far as I'm aware is considered some great evil that should be purged from all English translations ever.

NatalieXHunter is attempting to contact Katrina for an interview and apparently, they have contacted visa DMs

will this interview happen? remains to be seen. But what questions would you ask and what topics would you want Natalie to cover if it does? ofc we should not expect good faith from Katrina. but this could be an interesting opportunity

honestly pointless to do so if you ask me.

while I can understand everyone's cynicism (i don't think Kat is even capable of doing anything in good faith)

I do think this is a raver interesting and unique opportunity. more transparency is something I think we have all been asking for and this might just be a good chance to get it if this interview does in fact happen. Natalie has a proven track record of being anti-censorship and being on our side (her videos covering normalities for example) so I trust that she would not softball and shy away from asking Kat hard questions and providing her more than enough rope to hang herself on. and if anything it might make a good example we can point to that showcases just how dumb and crazy these cartel members are. as we can decent whatever arguments kat tries to make.

it's also a good way we could have our own voices heard. if we give Natalie our (vairs users) questions and topics we would most like to have Kat grilled on I'm sure she would consider bringing these issues up. and if Kat runs away like a coward it would be very funny. it's basically a win-win for us.

and this is not even considering the opportunity to use this for shilling and promo of Varis if Nat gets on board with collaborating and using this thread as a basis for her interview (I've already linked Nat to this thread btw).

I understand everyone is doomer pilled and thinks doing anything outside of dunking on people on Twitter is cringe but don't toss a possible opportunity away is all I'm saying

given we have no guarantee if this interview is even gonna happen yet, I hope it will. but chances are still low. but who knows let's just see how it plays out and help Nat in whatever way we can imo.

Here are some questions I had in mind.

What lead you to work as a localizer? what do you think makes for good localization?
what are some anime and manga that you enjoy and why?
What do you do when you come across problematic material in a work and why?
How do you interact with fans who are critical of how localizers handle a work?
What's the communication like between localization companies and the original publishers and mangakas?
Are manga authors/publishers aware of how their works are being translated for the western market?

I'd be surprised if she answers even half of these honestly.

Apologies for necro’ing the thread, but I’m currently reading up on translation theory, and so far I can conclude that Katrina is pulling stuff out of her ass.
She's doing it to pretend that her work is something beyond normal translation and deserves more money

It's cool, threads like this tend to go quiet until said Eccentric Individual does something dumb again

if you don't mind I think it would be interesting if you made a thread about translation theory since you are reading up on it. It might be beneficial for people to have more info on it so we can better combat the bullshit spewed by people like Katrina.

I agree it would be beneficial to document what "those people" define "translation theory" as, along with what it entails. Maybe a separate thread so people can just refer to what is documented in there when needed. To defeat your enemy you must know your enemy. And credit where it's due because, yeah, it's not entirely black-and-white on the methods of reframing one language in(to) another. If you do it literally, you can end up with backwards and illogical English sentences (which I am sure many of us know very well from consuming eastern media, particularly Japanese). We know this, so once again, don't fall for the "you just want a machine translation" trap (but really if a vandalizer gives you 15%, and MTL gives me 60%, then I'll be happy with the MTL and use my cultural knowledge to fill in). Also, the grammar is obviously different from English. You need to figure out how to best convey the same meaning... but that does NOT include lying about your intent to vandalize, and injecting something that didn't exist.

Slight tangent that isn't necessarily related to Katrina herself but is related to the syntax she often throws around: When it comes to western vandalizers we know that "translation theory" is a BS term. Instead of using the term "translation theory," I would probably describe the act of translating something like "cultural understanding." It reeks of academia fart sniffing tendencies to inflate their own egos with fancy words (theory is nebulous and implies that those without esoteric knowledge cannot understand, which is perfect for their gatekeeping tendencies). They can't fool us. It reminds me of that Lucoa "patriarchal societal demands" scene in Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Yes, in that line there's that Japanese word that refers to a society (I think insinuates a societal standard as well?), but in English we infer the same thing by referring to society with a casual collective noun. Everyone wants you to get a job / Society wants you to get a job. People were looking at me weirdly / Society was looking at me weirdly (so I put on a hoodie). We know it was just an opportunity for the people writing the dub script to inject their ideology. In their mind, they still referred to a society, which was in the original Japanese script, so they did their jobs correctly! Dishonesty at its finest. FE:Fates is another example of blatant malice. You can't lie about that, especially when an ENTIRE support conversation was removed in favor of ellipses.

One of my favorite sayings in Vietnamese is: "Nhà là phải có nóc," or "a house has to have a roof." So imagine you were watching a Vietnamese animated show and one of the characters says (in Vietnamese): "This is the house that I am the roof of". To the uninformed, just hearing the words and translating it literally to English gives you a very perplexing statement. In reality, the character is referring to his wife, because in Vietnam, the roof is the "head" of the house. The husband is the leader (roof), and the wife is what follows (the support and foundation). To translate (or dare I say localize) that scene into English, we would most likely use the simplest, most straightforward answer with the least confusion: "This is my wife." The original use of the house idiom is now gone in place of the actual meaning through use of the transitive property, because otherwise it wouldn't make any sense to the language being translated into. If some scholars figure out a way to involve the house metaphor while still delivering the line in a similar amount of time, good on them. Otherwise, I'd say... line translated, and we can make a (external) note for readers to learn about the source culture. That's all it takes! If these vandalizers were actually deserving of their positions and actually "translated" with integrity, people wouldn't be having a problem. All it took was that first noticing of censorship to start questioning everything... and they only have themselves to blame.

Katrina has been aware of Varis all along (the only thing she could possibly be referring to by "not kiwi farms")? How funny.

Context: this came from a thread of hers last year of her defending the poor translator cartel.

if it's a dead thread why even talk about it, Katrina?

if we are no threat to you. why let us live rent-free in your mind? also if it's dead that should be a good thing as I said before it means she's not doing anything people feel is worth posting about.

She's such a dumb ass lmao. even if this is an old post
