Kingdom Hearts

X-BLADE - Master Xehanort, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep.

With that mandatory meme out of the way. This is the Kingdom Hearts thread. Talk about the games, bitch about the story, doompost about the future of the series, do whatcha wish. Just uhhh discuss KH. I guess.

So guess I should start the thread by askin. If you have played the series, where did you start? Got a favorite game?

For me I started at 358/2 Days and my favorite game is Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix (its also my favorite game of all time).

Guide for people who want to get into the series

“Where do I play the games?”

You can get pretty much every game (excluding Melody of Memory and KH3’s RE;MIND DLC) for around $25-$30 on PSN and likely the Microsoft Store as well. They constantly go on sale so its pretty easy to get the series for cheap. Anyways every KH game (excluding 358/2 Days, Re;coded, and the mobile games. The first two were remade into movies the other one is obvious as of to what it is) are on Playstation, XBOX, and now PC surprisingly enough.....just uhhh wait a year or so before buying the PC ports though. Currently they are EPIC GAMES EXCLUSIVES so unless you REAAALLLY wanna shill out money to EPIC and Tim Sweeney. Just wait for the inevitable steam release (the games are also full priced on EGS so when they come to steam they will VERY LIKELY go on sale and be bundled at the same price as they are when on sale on PS/XBOX).

“Wheres the switch ports?”

Dunno. Presumably the lower end versions of the games (2.8 and 3 especially) will probably be ported over to the switch a year or so after the PC ports release. That and Melody of Memory is already on the switch so that won’t need porting.

They are out on PC now. Games actually don’t have any denuvo, just the normal EGS DRM....meaning they have already been cracked and are floating on the seven seas for pirates to grab.

I’d recommend picking them up on PS4 if you have one, otherwise wait for the inevitable steam release....unless of course you really want to play them. Then pirate them, don’t give Tim Sweeney your money, for as you see. He already paid for it in advance.

I must say that Kingdom Hearts 3 was a let down that really got to me. Back in 2002, I thought the idea of mixing Square Soft and Disney characters together pretty stupid. Once I gave it a try I saw that it was a pretty good experience. Yes, the story is cheesy and the characters and interactions a bit childish, but it could be expected since it IS Disney. The gameplay was solid (except the freaking camera controls) and so the overall experience was nice.

Then came Kingdom Hearts 2. Oh boy, back in the day my PS2 could sail the seven seas I even played the Japanese version first because I was so looking forward to it. Played through it, the English version, the original Final Mix version (which was also in Japanese with English voice acting). I loved that game.

I played through the other games Chain of Memories (also the remake), Birth by Sleep (personally enjoyed it a lot, but it introduced some difficulty bullshit into the series), 382/2 (didn't finish it though), Dream Drop Distance and 0.2.

Then Kingdom Hearts 3 came out. I'm not gonna lie the game IS pretty, but I would say that the most outstanding quality imo. Magics were greatly reduced and there were finishers/commands a lot which makes most combats quite easy. The story to me was so brain dead. It felt like a filler game and it was supposed to wrap things up. The story felt like a Popeye episode, fill it with whatever and have Popeye eat some spinach close to the end and bulldozer the rest of it.

Now, I am not saying to not play. I still enjoy the series overall. I think it is pretty good and worth a try. I am just letting my frustrations out. :megu-scare:

I don't have any personal anecdotes or thoughts to add as I haven't played these games before, but I just remembered a video I enjoyed months ago that involved implementing in a custom boss into KH2. For those of you interested, here's the video. It's a bit long, so grab your popcorn.

In general and slightly off-topic, I greatly recommend Tech Rules to anyone who likes the history, design, and implementation aspects of gaming.

Welp. Just beat DDD (PS4) and hoooo boy. I have mixed feelings about it. But for the most part I think it fucking sucked. Probably the second worst KH game I’ve ever played with Re;Com being the first.

sure the music and voice acting were good, I enjoyed the story, Flowmotion was fun, and the worlds were nice. But what really makes me hate the game is a few things. For one thing how fucking short the worlds are, yeah sure I used balloon memes but the worlds just felt so....small. So short. It didn’t feel like a proper world, only apart of one. Then theres the combat, christ I wasn’t a fan of it. It wasn’t really all that fun, and I’m somebody who throughly enjoyed BBS. And finally the difficulty scaling. Was I underleveled? Probably I finished the game at like level 25/26 for both Sora and Riku. But regardless shit like the second Ansem fight and the Young Xehanort fight felt maybe a bit too hard. But again perhaps that much was my own fault.

Tldr of this massive wall of rambling texts;
DDD was shit and I hated it. But at the same time I have some rather....mixed feelings about it.

Also Traverse in Trance was the best non-combat theme. Best combat/boss theme was L’lmpeto Oscuro.
