Discussion MMOs - The General

Any of you fags play any MMOs? Whether they be browser based, an actual program, or anything inbetween, whaddaya playin' and why?

I bounce between WoW Classic and FFXIV, on a Classic kick, especially with the announcement of Burning Crusade Classic. Stopped playing Retail WoW because despite Shadowlands being LEAGUES better than BFA, I think I've just lost the drive to play it. Been with WoW since late 2006, a few months before the original launch of TBC, but I guess retail has hit its limit with me. But I will finally be able to experience the content that I just VAGUELY remember with Vanilla Classic and BC Classic, so I will enjoy it.
Been playing XIV since a few months before Stormblood launched, so I got to experience leveling TWO different classes just to get the job crystal for my white mage (fuck that honestly, glad they changed it). Kind of burnt out on it, because aside from wanting to experience the story (which I again have some major issues with), the gameplay loop is kind of dull, even NOW with Shadowbringers. But that's for another topic. XIV is still a great game, and an AMAZING comeback story with an even greater send off to the original 1.0.

I've also poked at FLYFF, OS Runescape, Maplestory, and Guild Wars 2, but not enough to really have an opinion other than 'meh, not for me'.

It's been a couple months since I opened up FFXIV, but I probably should. My axe-potato was fun.

Can't go back to WoW. Did Hardcore raiding as a healing priest from vanilla all the way up to Mists. Once was quite enough for me.

Man, they REALLY need to add alt roles to jobs. I want my fucking moon cat to SMASH WITH THE GIANT FUCK OFF AXE SHE HAS GODDAMMIT. And I feel you on the raiding thing, after dealing with Mythic Emerald Nightmare and Heroic Nighthold as a Holy paladin, think that was the downward trend for me. Didn't help that BFA was absolute ass.

>Disc is now about shields
>Whoops, we can't balance it properly. Disc is now about dealing damage.
>Whoops, we can't have the priest outdamaging the Subt rogue despite the fact he's gone maces for some reasons. Better nerf the damage and make you rely on flash heal
>Whoops, we made you into healing paladins and we can't have that. Better nerf your panic buttons, and also, you're back to being about shields.
>Whoops, we can't balance it again. Now you're about doing damage.
>Whoops, we can't balance the damage because now you're outdamaging frostfire mages. Better remove frostfire from the game, also your healing is gutted, you can only heal if you're doing damage now.
>Whoops holy is shit now, we gotta nerf your shields again.
>Whoops, now holy can't heal. Better make you an AoE healer which is Holy's niche. Also, you don't get renew anymore.

They gave Druids 4 specs in the end, but they can't do that for any other class? I swear, every game I pick up, vidya or tabletop, retarded devs just go out of their way to ruin.

Also
>Alt roles for jobs
I would pay actual currency to be able to rogues/ninjas as evasion tanks, and lancers/dragoons as... you know, an actual tank.

They kind of had to with Druids because, well, with the current specialization system instead of the old talent system, trying to be a bear or cat would have been infuriating.

And would you pay REAL money or gil for that? I'd pay gil to be able to go full on Inner Release and show that stupid fucking SAM how to ACTUALLY DPS. And don't you know, DRG are already tanks! They tank the floor.

>Druid
Remember the day when they only had one healing button because you couldn't stack HoTs?
Somehow those days are better then what they did to druids post Cata.
>Samurai
Remember to hit every button all the time because rotations are for noobs!
>DRG tanks the floor
That's unkind. 'Tank' implies they had a chance to survive the first hit.

That said, I will never forget my first impression of this game:

I used to play Wow vanilla when we couldn't pay for the subs so instead we played on pirate servers. Then I and my bro moved into vanilla and started paying for the pre-paid cards(they would come in a similar-to-CD-disc cases. We also had the boxed versions of the main game and expansions. Then played TBC, WOTLK a bit and then a little bit of Cata and then never came back. My bro played every single expansion and I just casually played from time to time. I used to play hunter troll with alchemy and herbalism, my bro pretty much played almost every single class and race available. Good times, they will never come back:seething::seething::seething:
Also, has anyone of you played F2P MMOs from early 2010s?

I played Drift City for quite a long time, then I decided to leave when I was forced to play with Japs 24/7 because the English version of the game was shut down. As if I was going to put up with moon runes...

The only reason why I touched that game was due to EA's decision to kill off Motor City Online, which was the first racing MMO that I played and enjoyed. When they decided to axe it, I had no other choice but to wait for something comparable to pop up. This led me to Drift City. Eugh, If I had waited longer, I would've stumbled upon Need for Speed World. Unfortunately, that shut down earlier than the English version of Drift City did.

I played a little of WoW just before Cataclysm was released, because my co-workers were into it and explained they were overwriting history to change the map. So I rolled up an undead mage, played the demo, and got to about level 17. The quests didn't seem worth the time it would've taken to write them, survivability was little to none if I attracted the attention of two monsters at the same time, and players killed me a few times while I was either questing or moving to the next quest area. Really didn't see the appeal.

Rift was another notable WoW-clone at the time, so I had a look at the free version of that to see if it was more to my tastes. And the answer was yes, but only a little. It didn't have the familiarity of "hey, that's an abomination, I loved those in Warcraft 3", but on the other hand its character models were prettier. The class system looked like it had some potential, but in the end Rift wasn't to my liking either.

The only WoW-clone that I actually intend to play is SWTOR. I ran through each class in the F2P version to get the hang of it, and it turns out this is a lot like a Bioware game. Possibly the last good game from Bioware, but it won't ever be available in single-player so everything good about it will disappear when the servers shut down. This, I intend to play through at some point to see what it's like when you don't have all the F2P nerfs to income and XP game.

As MMORPGs go, my baseline is Runescape 2. Played it for a bit, then switched over to a different account because I didn't want to have numbers in my username. And also because I wanted to register for the forums on a fansite with the same name as my character. This new character was intended to be a quester right from the start, and one of my goals was to get through every quest in the game without following a quest guide. Other goals were to unlock every teleport in the game, and to increase Agility to be able to run longer: anything to increase mobility and get me from point A to anywhere in the world at a moment's notice. To me, that is what shows mastery over the world.

Runescape in 2007 was in turmoil, but mostly I was sitting there as I point and laugh at the PvP community's outrage. Anything that makes them unhappy is inherently good, and besides, the other changes made trading items far more convenient. No longer did you need to stand in a bank and shout what you had to offer. It was good for a while, and around 2010 it switched to RS HD: finally some hardware acceleration and better graphics for the water. This is about the peak, I ditched the game in 2011 or so once they tried to replace the combat system with something more WoW-like.

Apparently realising this was a terrible idea, old-school popped up shortly afterwards. Designed to cater to people who liked Runescape and wanted to play Runescape, instead of people who liked WoW and wanted to play WoW but with a Runescape skin over it. You have to start from level 3 again, but it only had some of the corruption from RS3 leaking in. Also I discovered my account had been hacked, and gold farmers had been training my Hunter skill for me. They left me with 77/99 in that skill, giving me an excellent method for making large sums of money.

In the end I did get access to all the teleports and a high Agility level, plus plenty of good items. But since there are corrupting influences leaking in, I no longer have the respect for the game to go through it without quest guides. I completed every quest in the game, but I'm disgusted by how many of them have "mechanics". This is supposed to be an RPG, reflexes and walking to specific spots are fundamentally against the genre. Not "walk over here before the fireball land to not be insta-killed". It's gone from RPG to QTE.

About NFS World, the private server exist after the game has been shut down.

I'd rather not classify destiny 2 as an MMO but it calls itself that right now so that's what i'll refer to it as and say yes, i do play MMOs. The only one i've spent most of my time on as of right now is Destiny 2.

It's been a ride and a half to say the least. Other than this, not sure what other game i could go after that's "good" enough to draw me in.
