:anime-think:So for a while I have been curious about mmos, but because of the time and money investment they often involve I stay away from then. That said I am curious to hear ypur opinion on it. Do you play any mmos?

Apparently theres this new one called tower of fantasy. Does anyone know anything about it?

I dont play them because i am not too big on the social interaction bit, lack friends, and think they are a massive time investment. I despise the limited time content and events where unless you were there from close to day 1 and played regularly you are missing parts of the game
I also found the subscription to be a bit of a turn off but in retrospect i will take any subscription over free to play microtransaction gachashit

I did play warframe for a long time but i never understood why people call it an mmo

I have always been curious about warframe. The artstyle and the fact that it was a third person shooter style certainly caught my attention.

I thought you could play the game with many people is not that why thry call it an mmo?

In every mission in the game you can group up with up to 3 other people the only time you see more than that are little hub worlds where no real gameplay is going on
I compare the gameplay to monster hunter, kill things to get resources to craft better things to kill stronger things

If you really want to check it out ill help you get started and if enough people are interested we can throw together a varis clan

I used to be big into an MMO called Metin 2, but the glory days on that one are long gone.
I tried out many over the years, but non ever caught my eye (besides Scarlet Blade, but that is for a different reason) and since switching to Linux the options have become even smaller.

I heard good things about FF 14 and it seems to be the only MMO out there that you seem to regularly hear good things about. People were also raving about PSO when that one finally came to the west, but I've never heard anybody talk about it since.

Personally I think MMOs have become stale and are strongly on the decline. One of the reason being the current status quo in the gaming market which simply does not work with MMOs. I mean just look at the one made by Amazon. What a shit show!

I've played quite a few MMO's over the years.

WoW, Aion, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Guild Wars 2, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Final Fantasy XIV, Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Online 2.
Most of the time I just lost the people I played with and once those games no longer have that element of "friends" they kinda get boring, and I can play most of them solo a lot ha ha.

The version of PSO2 that came over west is very late into the game and has had a lot of things ruined, the version I played was during the normal release and a fan translation of the JP version and on the JP servers.

FFXIV has the best story over all of all the ones I've played by far. There is a lot to do and you can do anything on one character which is nice, and is something that a lot of newer MMO's are now copying. The only things you will miss out on are the Timed events from Valentines, Christmas etc. But as the game is now so far along the experience in the older content has been change a lot and it no longer feels the same, it is sadly not the same experience as playing each expansion at release.

As for games like Warframe and Monster Hunter, I find these more fun now as they are more pick up and play, no real requirements to always be playing, which I like.
I've started playing Warframe again just the other day and caught up on the main story, the game actually has a good story to it as well.

I have only two recommendations.

While the new content in Phantasy Star Online 2 has most definitely put a dent in it's population, I highly suggest you find some friends who still do the old content in the game as it's a good way to learn how the game works... even if the new content has slightly different game mechanics. It's always good to learn from the roots first. Plus, by doing the old content you'll get more gems for stuff.

I would also be that guy who suggests FFXIV due to it's overwhelming success, amazing story and the amount of content it provides. I don't play this as often myself and tend to just watch my friends play it but if you ever decide to play I highly recommend asking if anyone you know plays it, playing this game alone can be dreadfully boring at times and feeling left out is what has made me stop playing this.

I could throw in a third recommendation but the servers are dead, if you are a fan of the classic Shin Megami Tensei games then Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE would be for you... though it's only accessible now through a private server that I seem to have forgotten about.

I hope you find the right MMO that appeals to you.

The last good MMO was Everquest. Maybe DaoC. Everything since then has been progressively worse. WoW ruined the genre more than anything by making the first theme park MMO and making so much money that everyone else tried to do the same thing.

Monsters and Memories is the only MMO I really have hope for right now and it's at least three or four years away. Maybe Ashes of Creation has a chance to be good too, but I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for the way that M&M is.

I loved Lineage 2 back in the day. Way ahead of its time. Unfortunately too much grind needed.
I played on a private server, at one point we found an item we wanted to get, so my mate and I asked an admin if he could spawn a whole lot of the enemy in the arena area with really quick respawn. We killed 10's of thousands of them and still didn't get the drop ha ha.

FFXIV is among one of the best games I've ever played. Its story, music, and gameplay are top notch, I am so spoiled by its multiclass gameplay, not having to make alts just to play different classes, that I can't look at other MMOs in the same light again.

PS. Community is fine, but don't engage with FFXIV Forum, and Twitter. FFXIV is occasionally called the "Twitter Of MMORPG" for reasons.
