The Neptunia franchise has had a small but dedicated niche audience from its beginning as a PS3 game back in 2010. Since then Idea Factory and Compile Heart has released a multitude of games. The three original PS3 titles (MKII in 2011 and Victory in 2012), along with their remakes for PS Vita and PC (2013-2014). VII, a fourth game in the main series, released on PC and PS4 in 2015. Not to mention the various spin-off titles that have been getting released on a near yearly basis since 2014.

The series is known for its likable characters, fun stories, and well written jokes while at the same time having enjoyable gameplay mechanics. Recently the latest game in the series, Neptunia Virtual Stars was released on Steam.

If you're a fan of Neptunia, what are your thoughts on Virtual Stars? Or on series in general. If you've haven't to played any of the games, what would you like to know about this series going in or what other questions do you have for those who have played it?

Personally I have yet to play Virtual Stars but plan to get it someday soon. From what I've played, I personally say Re;Birth 2 is my favorite of them all. I liked the darker elements of that game (and while I got a save with the conditions set for the infamous conquest ending, I haven't touched it yet). Blanc is not only by favorite Neptunia character but my all time number 1 waifu.

i want blanc to crush my neck with her small yet monstrously powerful hands. i feel as if i count on one hand the amount of times i've seen her take damage above 0 while playing the mainline games, she's truly the queen of tanks

Neptunia certainly has some of the best art in a videogame thanks to Tsunako's amazing work (Date a Live also blessed by her work).
Still haven't completed a game yet but always get 20 hours in or so then burn out but always buy more.
The Blanc v. Zombies game was a lot of fun for their shooter/brawler.
Did see someone play through virtual stars and the mega-downgrade in cutscenes is kinda hard to take. No live-2d portraits anymore just some sub-par 3D models and one of the worst cutscenes ever which was just some exterior shot of a spaceship with corner portraits on the textbox.
Probably one of the more disappointing Neptunia games I've played was Super Neptunia RPG, kinda animates like a flash game and the unity engine ain't doing any favours for them on the switch. Platforming feels real clunky and the battles are even more tedious than they should be, even when speeding up the game with the right trigger.
Will probably start playing Sega Hard Girls after getting through some of my backlog.

That would explain why Virtual Stars has a mixed rating on Steam, and while I thought the artwork for Super Neptunia RPG was very clean and nicely done, I'd admit it was rather weak. Probably because Compile Heart didn't make it but another game studio in Montreal.

Love the characters, but the basic JRPG gameplay doesn't do it for me. It really feels like they wanted to make a VN and just put a barebones JRPG around it.
Yeah that's a good point. I don't mind the gameplay personally because its not exactly a huge series so I tend to be very forgiving on things such as a limited overworld and re-using dungeons & enemies, but yeah I can definitely understand why you'd have an issue with it.

Maybe I'm an ADHD riddled asshole, but without some manner of gameplay surrounding it, I find it hard to stay focused on VNs
Would appreciate a little less grind though

I played the firsth re;birth game and liked it very much but it felt like DLCs were needed in some parts of the game. I also played the game on my ps vita (no longer have it, big sad). Played it with the english dub and had plenty of fun.:nep-happy:
Also, I have a question for the fans of the franchise, what do you think of the eng and jp dubs for the series and if anyone can tell me how noire's voice changed in the eng dub in later games.
Also, any opinions on the VIII game and its remake?

I think I have all the base games in my library but have yet to play any of them
Practically the same for me, except I have played Rebirth 1 for a few hours on Vita.

The 4th wall breaks and jokes are good. I love Tsunako's art style which also pulled me to check out Date a Live LNs.

I haven't played Neptunia in the jp dub since I thought the eng dub was good enough to use. As for Noire's voice I honestly didn't notice a change but I played some of the later games years after playing the Re;Births.

As for VII and VIIR, I liked VII and played it all the way through. It definitely had the best antagonists of the series imo. As for VIIR, I do own it but I haven't played much of the actual game. The interacting with the goddesses feature is fun though.

Mhm good to know; I remember that one of the VAs had to leave because of the contract, so I wondered about the dub. Also, is it true that jiggles were removed in later Neptunia games?

Jokes aside though, glad to see a Neptunia thread here. I still need to beat re;birth 3. By the way is VVVTUNIA (Virtual Stars) any good? Was thinking of picking it up. Also another question. You lads hyped for Senran Nin Nin Ninja Taisen Neptunia? I sure as hell am since I enjoy both series and hey any new Senran game is better than no new senran game.

(by the way for those of you looking to play and/or replay Re;birth 2 and 3. Please use the retranslation patches. This shit makes the games dialogue much better and more bearable, as well as being arguably the better translation. RB2 and RB3 )

Oh, good to know. Thanks! Do you know if there are any translation patches for Re;birth 1 as well?
