Old and forgotten movie recommendations

varishangout.com
I thought of making a thread about old obscure movies that most people haven't probably seen or heard of. I watch on a regular basis old movies out of curiosity. I started this by watching Hausu and finding myself wanting to watch more movies that have that type of feeling to it. In that search I stumbled on what I would consider some real gems over the years and thought to share these movies so others maybe find something they like and just to have somewhere I can write about what I like because I enjoy writing.

Mostly it’s going to be old asian movies that I will write about, because that is what i'm most interested in. But from time to time there will be western movies and probably some lesser old movies when I find something that is interesting enough to write about.

I will write a short movie summary of every movie, what I liked about the movie. What I dislike and generally just details like camera work, pacing, music and more. Remember in general these movies will have slower pacing than movies nowadays, so if you are used to marvel movies where there is action every single second on the screen then you may find these movies extremely slow. So when I write about pacing, have in mind that what I consider to be a good paced movie can to somebody else be considered an absurdly slow movie.

Anyhow, feel free to add to this thread if you have some movies you think not many people know about. You don’t need to format in the same way that I do with the summaries and all that. That's just how I like doing it. Do as you please.

The first one I’ll recommend is:

Inugami-ke no ichizoku aka The Inugami Family (1976)
Length: 2h 25m
Tags: Mystery, Drama, Horror-esque
Director: Kon Ichikawa
Inugami poster.jpg

Story Summary: A detective named Kidaichi gets hired by Wakabayashi a man that gets murdered before he can talk to him. The reasoning for his hiring is because Wakabayashi implied that something awful will happen to the Inugami family. The family is in the middle of getting to know what will happen to the family fortune now when the master has passed away. The will the master left behind surprisingly says that on the condition Tamayo (an outsider of the family) marries one of the grandsons, she and her husband will then be the inheritor of the fortune. Something that will spike a conflict between the family relatives that will lead to bloodshed.

The good: The setting really gives this movie a color full atmosphere. The daytime scenes with the forest and flowers make for some beautiful filmed scenes while the inside scenes with the earthy toned walls and furniture give a good contrast. For being a very long movie it’s still good paced from the beginning to the end. The plot is always progressing even when it’s down time. The soundtrack is genuinely good, perfectly suited for the mystery feeling that the movie is trying to create. The camera work is not amazing but still good, the director kinda kept the camera work simple for the most part. The stillness of the frame works well with the stillness of some scenes. Some scenes where the director was experimenting with some extreme black and white was a cool touch.

The bad: Some parts of the plot are hard to follow since there are so many characters that are juggled back and forward in conversations. And it doesn't help that a lot of characters that get named don't get that much screen time so it’s hard to keep track of which person the characters are talking about at some movements. Which makes the plot more convoluted then what it really is. I also feel that the director should have clued in the viewer more on how could be the murderer. If you have ever read or seen a movie with a detective mystery plot, they usually give clues through the book / movie that points to who could be the murder. Something I feel didn’t happen enough here. Some scenes felt a bit overdramatizing in the sense that the acting doesn't add up with the action on the screen. Good example of this is in the beginning of the movie where a woman is on a rowboat that is sinking. When she sees that the boat is sinking, she just collapses and gives up. It’s like the realization of the boat sinking makes her faint which is absurd and kinda hilarious. Also Imdb lists this movie as a horror movie, something I wouldn’t say it is. It has some horror elements in the way that the masked man has a somewhat disturbing looking mask. But disregarding that I wouldn’t call this a horror movie. More like a mystery with one single horror element.

Score: 7/10
Some parts could have been better but for the most part it was worth seeing.

Well I've got a few suggestions for the history nerds here, but I can't really tell how forgotten they really are

1. The Longest Day (1962)
UEpLLmpwZw

A drama about D-Day/Operation Overlord. I honestly can't remember much about it, it's quite long (2 minutes short of 3 hours).
Honestly the weakest of these recommendeds since... I can't remember anything :shinobu_kaka:

2. 55 Days at Peking (1963)
55-Days-Peking.jpg

Starts of a bit slow for me with the romance sideplot, however the action is great. It's got a very good soundtrack, and the Siege of Peking is something rarely talked about, so this is a good start for people to get interested in this sideshow in China.

3. A Bridge Too Far (1977)
A_Bridge_Too_Far-286760286-mmed.jpg

This movie is incredibly memorable to me cause of the ridiculous "Panther" tank they had (It was a very poorly "Disguised" Leopard tank :shinobu_kaka:)
Give it a watch if you got the time, the actions quite good, and if you like tanks as much as me you'll get a kick out of the "Panthers" and "Panzers".

4. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
MV5BOGY5NmNlMmQtYzRlYy00NGQ5LWFkYjYtNzExZmQyMTg0ZDA0XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDIzMzcwNjc@._V1_.jpg

Great soundtrack. The Brits marching theme is incredibly catchy.
Very interestng story from an often forgotten front of WW2. I can't remember how accurate it is

5. Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines; Or, How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes (1965)
Ny5qcGc

The best of these movies.
You absolutely must watch this.
It's got an absolutely banger soundtrack, great comedy, and is just a good fucking movie.
If you haven't seen it do yourself a favour and go watch it immediately.

Sorry I can't add more detail, i'm not a great reviewer and don't have much else to say outside of what i typed but I wanted these 3 to be known.
If you're gonna watch any of these it's gotta be Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.
Easily the best, and most widespread appeal (ie don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it)

The Longest Day (1962)
If you can't remember it, that makes it forgotten, right? :korone-smug:

I think it's the definitive depiction of D-Day.

The best part is its sheer scale. Truly an epic film. You get to see D-Day from multiple perspectives -- American, British, German, French. It was shot with multiple directors, but doesn't feel like it. It comes together really well.

It feels very authentic. Much of the cast and crew were D-Day veterans. The cinematography, battle sequences, and practical effects are very impressive. For instance, the beach landing with hundreds of extras.

Though I think its scale is also its biggest weakness. Despite the runtime, there's not much characterization. There's a massive cast of big-name actors, but they're all playing small roles. I think that's a consequence of it having an identity crisis of it being a blockbuster action drama or quasidocumentary war epic.

It's a must-see if you're into war movies or history in general. Otherwise, still worth watching if you can stomach the run time. 8.5/10.

Good Stuff mate! I'll check them out. I got downloaded Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines and will probleby see it tomorrow. Seems like you like war movies, one I know of that I highly recommend is Paths of Glory (1957).

It's maybe not that obscure since it's Stanley Kubrick that have directed it but still it feels like many people haven't watched it. It's about an impossible attack on an anthill which fails horrendously and the trial the men have to go trough since they gets charged with cowardice by the court-martials. Some really great acting, the trial scene is my favorit beacuse of it having an strange absurdist comedic atmosphere simulare to Dr. Strange love (1964) (also an Kubrick movie I recommend watching). In additionally the sound design is amazing, really creats an feeling of chaos and hopelessness. I don't remember what French battle it's supposed to depict under world war 1 but maybe you can figure that out. :anime-think:

Insane Nerd Ramblings

Paths of Glory is fantastic, but you also need to see the original All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). I mean, heck, you can even watch the 1979 version with "John Boy" (for all us old farts that remember The Waltons) Richard Thomas, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasance and Sir Ian Holm (of Alien, Kenneth Branagh's Henry V & The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit Jackson movie fame). Not sure about the newest version as I haven't seen it yet. And if you ever get the chance, read the original book. Well worth it for anyone who is interested in The Great War...

zeki, florian and kelly is a 90s surrealist romance film about a group of 4 eccentric people, who meet after 2 of them hit and kill some old guy on the road, that want to plant a bomb that will affect clouds and make sudden infant death syndrome rain on tokyo, although if you take any of what i said literally and at face value then you probably wouldn't enjoy the film very much and think it's "random"

it's made by an osakan punk filmmaker called yamaoka nobu and the other film i've seen by him (pickled punk) is similarly directed, but i don't think it comes close to how well zeki pulls it off. very low budget, shot on a home video camera, very dialogue focused and is mostly fast paced internal monologuing (think monogatari) and it's half-abstract and philosophical and half-mentally confused thoughts about self-reflection of goals & desires, etc. or maybe that's just what i'm seeing in it, i haven't really figured out what might be the bottom line meaning of it yet. all of the characters in it are probably as unsure about what they're really trying to do as you will be, though

this trailer gives a pretty good idea of what it's like without any spoilers unlike most trailers. also if you want to see this film but can't find it i can PM you a very helpful and entirely legal and very free link. i'll put pickled punk in there too

anyway i just made this post so i can increase my post count and be less lurk-y. should i have not made this post in all lower case? probably

First time I hear about that one, seems interesting. Haven't watched that many movies that would be considered in the genre of surrelism but seems like a genre of movies that I would problebly be in to. The first movie that comes to mind that is somewhat surrealistic that I have seen is The Face of Another (1966) maybe something that would intrest you. It was some time ago I watched it but if I remember right it's about a businessman with a disfigured face, he gets a new start to his life when a doctor gives him a new hyper realistic face. This pretty much makes him feel like a whole new man that is not anymore bound to society. There is also a strange subplot with a women that the movies likes to bounce back and forth from time to time. Generally a really great movie with a lot of interesting imagery and some nice shot scenes.

Redline. I watched this on youtube about maybe half a month ago and I fell inlove with it. If you like F-Zero, Dead Leaves or even maybe Fist In The North Star (for it's settings maybe, or maybe just overall apocalyptic.) then I recommend this movie.

  • Intolerance (1916)
D.W Griffith's follow up to The Birth of a Nation (1915) Intolerance does exactly what it says on the can and tells the story of intolerance though out the ages. Intolerance doesn't have a pacific story line instate it has multiple from multiple different time periods kind of like Cloud Atlas or Forrest Gump. Intolerance is regarded as one of the most influential films of the silent era and it's easy to see why when you of a silent film you probably think of Charlie Champlin/Buster Keaton short. Well, this movie blows that expectation with a scale and scope that's impressive even by todays standards.

  • Eight Deadly Shots (1972)
Considered one of the best Finnish movies ever made Eight Deadly Shots tells the story of Pasi, who tries he's best to provide for his family but eventually falls into a life of crime and alcoholism. One day Pasi's wife confronts him about his alcoholism and after this Pasi becomes bothered by recurring physical pains and hangovers, and he develops a bad temper which starts to frighten his wife and children. His family is also humiliated as he gets into a fight, skips a sermon which he disrupts by shooting a gun outside, and is confronted by police who start visiting his home frequently. The film ends with a final outburst in which Pasi scares his family away and shoots after them with a rifle. When police arrive, Pasi shoots the officers dead, goes over to his neighbors' house and tells them to call the police chief. He is sentenced to life in prison. In this age of mass shootings this movie has become more relevant then ever I'm surprised Pasi hasn't become a sigma male Patrick Bateman, Travis Bickle style icon yet

  • The Year Of Living Dangerously (1982)
The Year Of Living Dangerously is a 1982 Australian New Wave romantic drama movie directed by Peter Weir based on 1978 novel of the same name by Christopher Koch staring Mel Gibstein as Guy Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver as Jill Bryant, Bill Kerr as Colonel Henderson, Noel Ferrier as Wally O'Sullivan and Linda Hunt as Billy Kwan. The story is about a love affair set in Indonesia during the overthrow of President Sukarno. It follows a group of foreign correspondents in Jakarta on the eve of an attempted coup by the 30 September Movement in 1965.

  • Cannibal! The Musical (1993)
Before South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone while studying at the University of Colorado at Boulder both Parker and Stone made a dark comedy musical based on the true story of Alfred Packer. Cannibal! The Musical is a very interesting watch especially for a fan of South Park like me as both Parker and Stone haven't made much outside of South Park

  • BASEketball (1998)
Another Trey Parker and Matt Stone movie BASEketball tells the story of Joseph R. "Coop" Cooper and Douglas "Doug" Remer one day while gate crashing a party they start playing a game of basketball when two classmates Cooper and Remer after seeing that their opponents are very good at basketball Remer and Cooper make up a game called "BASEketball" which becomes popular in the neighbourhood and to quite literally make a long story short eventually gets the attention of Businessman Ted Denslow and Cooper, Remer and Denslow creation of the National BASEketball League (NBL) along with numerous rules in place to prevent its decline. After the death of Denslow, Cooper and Remer gets full the Beers for one year on the condition that they win the next Denslow Cup; otherwise, ownership reverts to Denslow's widow Yvette. When Cooper refuses to accept any changes; Baxter Cain, owner of the Dallas Felons partners with Yvette as he tries to make the Beers lose the next Denslow Cup so she will own the team; however, the Beers still continue winning games and heading towards the championship. At the end of the movie Cooper and Remer despite their arguing win the game. Usually sport movies are quilt shit so this movie stand outs from all the others and it has great commentary on sports as a whole

  • Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish (1999)
Wakko's Wish AKA Wakko's Wakko Wish or on some DVD's as Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish is a 1999 animated musical movie based on the cartoon series Animaniacs. After the death of Sir William the Good the town of Acme Falls goes under the control of King Salazar the Pushy, King Of Ticktockia and ILDR the town basically becomes Birmingham. After Dot falls ill Wakko goes to a another town to find a ha'penny but when he gets it the Plotz takes it away thought taxes. Left with no other options Wakko wishes upon a star and a fairy called pip and the star that Wakko wish on falls on some mountains and the fairy tells Wakko that whoever touches the star first gets one wish. The following morning, the siblings tell the whole town in singing form about the star in their excitement, and all rush towards the glow in the mountains then it's a race to see who gets there first. This has everything you would want from a Animaniacs movie all the characters from the show from here and all of them equal amounts of runtime just like in the show

  • Ali G In Da House (2002)
Movie based on the TV show Da Ali G Show when the John Nike Leisure Centre is to be closed by the council Ali G and his mates Ricky and Dave put it apont themselves to became the prime Minister on order to save the centre. This movie is a classic I reminder seeing this movie quoted all the time in school even all these years later
