MONSTER
Everyone on IRC raved about this manga constantly during its serialisation, and about a decade later, I finally read it. While Urasawa Naoki's art was excellent and every scene with Inspector Heinrich Lunge was distilled 'cool'. Everything about the villain is absurd, beyond ridiculous. Almost comedy. Throughout the story, Naoki sets him things up where you'll have some old guy stare the villain in the eye and fall back traumatised by what he saw behind the villain's gaze, and then when you find out why the villain became a monster, I became annoyed cause I had a worse childhood than he did, sans being sent to an underground school to turn children into Adolf Hitler 2.0.

Maria-sama ga Miteru
This spawned a whole genre of Marimite clones and people referencing it, so it's required reading if you want to be a translator, but the book itself was boring cause the author really, really wanted to make the whole Ojou-sama school thing as authentic as possible. Maybe for a man who hates his life and wants to pretend he's whisked away to Catholic Yuri School, this sort of detail would allow them to forget their dark life and imagine a vivid world divorced from real world stress where they're forced to remember oodles of terms and rituals, but I never understood how this got so popular and why so many people tried to emulate it with their own equally dull, albeit poorly researched, Yuri school stuff, rather than do something interesting with Yuri.

A large part of me still feels like I should take my utter confusion and lack of appreciation for the overwhelming popularity regarding both of the above silently to my grave.

Attack on Titan is overrated, most 5/10 show I've watched some of.
One Piece, I keep getting: "it gets good after X episodes", get to X, say it is still shit, get a new X.
Death Note is another overrated one, another mid 5/10 show.
Anohana, I just found this one boring, had no pull or effect on me.

Well, it's pretty good to be the first anime you watch and it has some insteresting shit, but yeah. I particularly wouldn't watch it again because I know what will happen and it's not one of my favorites.

I agree with this one.

I could name so many but I'll limit myself for now-

My Hero Academia is the most unpleasant and unintelligent piece of dogshit media I've ever made the mistake of trying to slog through.

Everything by Studio Trigger sucks. Yes, everything. Even the "good" ones. It's all fucking shit in one way or another.

If I'll be honest here: Re;Zero

Its been years since I've watched S1, and whether or not S2 fixes any of the problems I had with it is seemingly a mixed bag. I just think it went downhill hard in the 2nd half, it became a slog by then.

For a more 'cultish' title I could care less for, Asobi Asobase. The main joke is "cute anime girls act gross GEDDIT" and stupid faces and the joke gets old fast. I'll admit though it actually did sometimes get a laugh from me so I can't fully hate on it. But man, people like to talk up how funny this show is and I don't get it.

Agreed. It started going downhill with trying to make the main guy some unsympathetic incel guy even though it makes perfect sense for him to be kinda fucked up by the situation he's in. Like what's he supposed to do, leave and let the waifus die? Or just keep working himself literally to death for the girls' sake with no expectation of even being understood let alone rewarded? I couldn't even be fucked to finish the first season with that shit going on.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
I know there's a million versions of it but I only saw the clapping one a long time ago and that ending was dogshit, I can't bring myself to give it more than a 6/10 despite its legendary reputation, also Shinji was... an interesting protagonist to say the least. I would've probably strapped him down to a chair and stuffed his mouth full of anxiety meds.

This is missing the point honestly, we're supposed to see Subaru's situation as fucked up but it's also a fact that Subaru is not without sin. He chooses to take part in these issues that are beyond him, he's biting more than he can chew. No, he isn't actually supposed to save anyone and no, he can't be rewarded since no one remembers his ordeals.
I don't know where you stopped watching, but Re:Zero is kind of clear with its message and how it deals with the isekai part. It's like, if you want the world, well, you'll have to work for it.

The worst part is, if you read the WN/LN and the What Ifs, you'll know that a lot of things just don't go wrong if Subaru doesn't interfere. It's debatable at some points later in the story if the cast could have survived certain ordeals without Subaru though.

EDIT: I've watched so much shit, either highly rated or very popular, and I can't really think of something that is actually overrated. More often than not, it's a matter of taste and disposition. There was a time when I enjoyed SAO for example, but then after watching even more anime, SAO became barebones and that type of wish fulfillment wasn't for me anymore. But if I do have to pick certain things, LotGH (Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I really never understood the hype surrounding this, but whatever) and maybe recently, AoT which I believe was driven into the mud more than anything.

You're supposed to watch the movie End of Evangelion after the series. That's the "real" end.

Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin. Particuarly post-timeskip where the writing goes to shit because Isayama is trying his hardest to force the audience to accept the Rumbling while also waving a "Genocide Bad" flag around. I've greatly fallen out of love with that show.
