Megathread Poor Localization Compilation Thread

There is a skinhead (スキンヘッズ) trainer archetype in the Pokemon series, which is pretty cool.
In the English versions they were renamed to "Cue balls", and later to "Roughnecks".
It's of course a very lame change. And definitely not one they will ever revise.

Here is a Skinhead from Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Cool to see my own edits on here. GNOSIA and Hell Mode both have terrible translations, each in their own different ways.

Hell Mode is filled with ebonics and quirky made up dialogue. Just no regard for quality at all.

GNOSIA's translation tried to alter thing to appeal to LGBT people. Like completely erasing any mention of the main character, Yuuri, being a man,
And throughout all episodes, 3 major characters were referred to with they/them. Yuuri, the main character in the screenshot. And also Racio and Setsu. Incredibly stupid and confusing for the viewer. Another thing is that the concept of Hansei, which is a gender concept that is unique to the world of GNOSIA and not to be compared to anything from real life. But despite this fact the translations just hamfisted terms like asexual and non-binary in there with no regard to what Hansei really means.

Also, while I haven't played it, I heard that the GNOSIA game, which is what the anime is based on, also has a terrible localization that inserts all sort of things into the tl.

And of course, you can't have a modern anime translation without the word sus.

I really dislike when it's inserted like this. Even when I played an emulated version of the game, I was very surprised at the whole Gender thing. It was truly mishandled in truly horrible fashion.
This edit of mine went pretty viral on X, to the point that people made Youtube videos about it. Not sure if it's been posted on here.

Ep.6 of Jujutsu Kaisen Shimetsu Kaiyuu Zenpen, which became infamous for how badly Crunchyroll handled the subtitles.
The male character Hoshi Kirara gets referred to with "they/their" 10 times, and even once with "she" in the subtitles.

And here is a comparison between the Crunchyroll and Amazon's subtitles.
You can see how Amazon uses the correct "he".

I keep asking myself daily, why people support Crunchyroll or why they even subscribe to it, if there is better services that do a better job. Crunchyroll has been on the decline since that fake Magical Girl Western Cartoon that tried to label itself as "Anime" and tried to pigeonhole this diversity into Eastern works through Westerm Colonialism.

Normalfags are mindless slaves, and there's nothing going on in their heads. They can't think past the fact that the anime appears on their screens when they pay their monthly fees. That's why Crunchyroll will never die.

Not sure what the exact source of this image is. From those big leaks a while ago perhaps? It reads like a warning from HR towards the developers.
Anyways, I've translated it. Btw, the character in question here is Matisse (Surge in the localization), because those are his boots in the image.

skinheads were still a thing when I was into punk music. They were basically punks who got into politics

some punks were friendly to skins and some were against them. They both hated goths and hippies with great passion and very much looked down on people who used psychedelics

sometimes they would fight each other over trivial things or spazz out in mosh pits and intentionally hit each other and it would break out into a brawl to the point where the venues punks and skins hung out in diversified

generally speaking a punk would kick you for talking about politics and a skin would kick you for being ignorant about politics

here's an example of punk music no skinhead would be caught dead listening to

Yeah it's the document where they list a bunch of stuff localizers complained about and had changed.

Japanese developers really do listen to everything that they are told. It's pathetic.
Yes this is why I am staying in AA's and Indies, or even my classics before 2020.
Youjo Senki II is finally here,
But I immediately noticed how many made up and exaggerated swears there are in the subtitles.
Some very unprofessional translation work.

This was a post I made on the repo a few days ago, criticizing a "translator's" decision to quit over an AI translation being done ahead of His. I think it's a pretty sound argument myself, but the response was... You can check out the link for the full context and judge for yourselves.

They locked the thread. Of course they did. They should know they are in the minority opinion and most people still forget the reason why piracy exists or Fantl exists is because like you mentioned the official TL is horribly done. Everyone complains about AI or MTL and is obviously afraid about it taking their jobs away but the whole issue circles back to AI and MTL being needed because at times the fan community also does the same thing the official TL but with their own spin on it than what it was written as or close to the original meaning doing their jobs right at the start.

The example you gave is funny because SMT I and SMT II had the same problem. A Fantl was working on it and usually the unwritten rule back then was if someone was working on it then another group should not. The group sat on their ass for 6 years, also earning PATREON of i think 500$ a month money to translate the game and finally a new group came in and announced they were working on it and they had a track record. Suddenly the Fantl who was supposed to work on it began to work at a breakneck pace and finally managed to get the fantl out within 1.5 years. It proves that they are lazy and are like Yanderedev and the rest if you do not give them a deadline or make them work for it they will constantly make excuses and hoard monthly money from their Patreons and complain about the competition and put nothing out.

Another edit for episode 2 of Youjo Senki.
This week's episode continues the trend of the translator making Tanya's speech unnecessarily vulgar.

But the worst thing the translator did this week was translating 民族主義者 (Nationalist) to ethno-nationalist.
FYI, this episode uses both the terms ナショナリスト (Nationalist), which comes straight from English, but also 民族主義者.
Both mean the same thing.

Btw, feel free to share any of my edits around if you feel like it, no need to credit me or anything.
