So I just personally finished Higurashi Gou, and was going through some reddit threads about it. Lo and behold, someone spotted another translation error. (Link is here, but I'll explain in the post.)

Reminder: this is the person we're dealing with.
https://archive.is/k2RBg Was also the same person that localized "nii-nii" to "big brudder" in Higurashi Gou

Now for the actual mistake:
In episode 1, the card game Old Geezer/Old Bachelor (ジジ抜き, jiji-nuki), was wrongly translated into Old Maid (ババ抜き, baba-nuki).

1621967729688.png

(around the 15:20 mark, after Rika headpats Keiichi; you can hear Keiichi say "jiji-nuki")

Normally, this won't be that big of a deal. However, it's a plot point and a fundamental distinction that the Club (the main characters) never plays Old Maid, only Old Geezer.

Old Maid: In Japan, Old Maid is played by adding an additional card (a joker), and the player left with the joker loses.
Old Geezer/Old Bachelor: Instead of adding a card, one card is removed, and the player left with the odd card (the card with the removed partner) loses.

(Paraphrased from the relevant episode's summary (spoilers beware for real) on the Higurashi wikia)
The villain asks the protagonist, that since they play a lot of games, if they ever played "Old Maid." [main character] replies that they never do, they play "Old Geezer." [The villain] replies that the rules are about the same: "The sin in this world is just like Old Maid. Everyone pushes the one old maid onto one another." [The villain] has drawn the Old Maid and will take revenge for it by shooting [main character].
...
Afterwards, [another main character] notes that [the villain] laughed off Old Geezer thinking it is the same as Old Maid. On the contrary, if one adds the missing card in the game, Old Geezer has no losers.

The point is that you can go on and on about translation theory all you want, but then fail to capture important distinctions like this one which are sensitive to the original work.

I clicked on that link and the amount of fags that were defending those straight up insulting translations is disturbing. But ofc, what do you expect from a fucking retard asylum like Reddit.

Fucking cancer on that Reddit thread. I'm sad that I'm a single individual sometimes.
Like imagine being so RETARDED that you'd defend fucking stupid shit of ANY KIND.
And the Old Geezer mistake is like, fucking hell, you're losing good writing because of morons that I'd say don't even deserve to live, not only NOT WORK in these industries.

And yet fansubs, like Nii-sama for example, can do much better job than her. As you can see the image below.

Like lets be honest, how do you manage to fuck it up as a professional translator? lmao

Because it's intentional, they're intentional doing it because their objective is for anime to die. They legitimately hate the industry because it makes people happy, and all of them are miserable harpies who want everyone to suffer like they do because not a single person wants to have anything to do with them.

We should at least be thankful that a portion of people found it terrible.

I kind of regret linking the reddit thread: it created unnecessary anger here when we all already know that there exists people who defend this sort of localization.

I would imagine them simply caring more about themselves than about the work they're translating.

Because it's intentional, they're intentional doing it because their objective is for anime to die.
It may be more accurate to say that they want anime to cater to their values first. And of course, when that doesn't happen, they try very hard to place themselves as the intermediaries to twist the work of others to their own ends, seeing as they can't make anything of worth of their own.

DW, nobody is angry at you. Folks, including me, are disgusted that that kind of normalfag scum infiltrated the hobby and we will have to deal with more retards that would defend this kind of lazy, incompetent & straight up intentional mutilation & disrespect.

Just found out Funimation has altered the dialogue for the Dub version to make it less offensive, then what's originally written in Japanese on the seventh episode of Full Dive. And as well as complete mistranslated the sign on Hiro's neckless on purpose.

Katrina didn't even bother translate last extra dialogue line at the start of the intro of Mieruko-chan's first episode, and I think I know why. Unlike both Muse Asia, and the French translation done by Wakanim that does their job properly.

Edit: Here's the Japanese dialogue here:

Just want to update my post. Because Funimation has completely cut out the sexual reference dialogue for it's English dub on first episode at the start of the intro.

OFC is that shithead Steiner. The dude could prob have his own fucken thread with all the bullshit he has gone on about

like there is no need to recontextualize what rance said just so it can play into current events around the Vaxx. it changes the meaning behind what he said

I fucken hate these people

edit: hi Steiner stop fucken learking and say hi. we don't bite.... much. archive

also, it does fucken change the meaning. you go from him not understanding how someone could be spooked by a jab to actively calling someone a baby over it. these are not the same.

As someone who's a huge TWEWY fan and as much as the fandom doesn't like to admit it, part of the reason neo twewy failed badly was due to the localization.
