Discussion Report: PS3, Vita, And PSP Stores To Be Permanently Closed In A Few Months

According to Thegamer The PS3,(July 2) PS Vita,(August 27) and PlayStation Portable (July 2) stores will soon be terminated.

Original Article

The PS3, PS Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores aren’t long for this world. According to a source familiar with the situation (verified by TheGamer), the stores are due to be closed down from July. The announcement is planned for the end of this month.

PSP’s and PS3’s stores are to be closed on July 2, while the PS Vita store will stay open until August 27. After those dates, you will no longer be able to purchase digital copies of games or DLC for any of the Sony consoles mentioned above.

The PS3 released in November 2006 and sold a total of 87 million units during its lifetime. The console officially ended production four years ago after 11 successful years on the market and three model redesigns. The PSP enjoyed similar success, selling around 81 million units since its release in March 2005.

Notoriously, the PS Vita was a bit of a flop. Sony’s second handheld released in December 2011 and sold between 10-15 million units across its lifetime, despite being an excellent little machine. The handheld recently saw some resurgence in popularity, thanks to how easy it is to turn into a portable emulator.

If you own any of the three consoles and you’ve always wanted to download a specific game, now is the time. No doubt the price of physical games will jump up once the stores cease to exist.

The success of the Nintendo Switch proves that there's a market for portable consoles these days, so perhaps one day we'll see Sony have another shot at a handheld. We might get a Doom game where you talk to the monsters first, but you never know.

My own comment: I'm not surprised really. It was bound to happen eventually. The console's are nearing or have passed a decade at this point. But the question that the article doesn't cover is will you be able to keep your virtual games or will they get lost or brake because of this?

P.s. if you think I need to archive this I will do it at a later date.

the ps3 uses the ps network right? I imagine you can still keep the downloaded games. If not then they atleast should announce when they will suspend the service.

Sorry for any confusion, changed your thread to the article format since it was more fitting

Game preservation will be at a all time high now.
there are already some collections but most aren't complete. PS1,2 and Vista shouldn't take that much space i would guess below 3TB but PS3 would need much more probably +20TB.

PS1 (+1720 out of 7,918): https://the-eye.eu/public/rom/Playstation/Games/
PS2 (1876 out of 3800): https://archive.org/details/RedumpSonyPS2NTSCU & https://archive.org/details/RedumpSonyPS2NTSCUPart2
PS3 (? out of 2278 games):

You can't download games through anything but the PS3 store due to some update issued about a year ago now.
Pretty much every update to the PS3 has been for gradually deprecating or removing support for things rather than fixing anything that actually has issues.

It's also worth noting that Gran Turismo 5's updates have all been pulled for whatever reason rather recently.

Better hope the Prototype builds of said games too get preserved and not lost to history.

van_halen Vanilla Lake moment might happen... fuck hoarders, seriously
Yeah people who intentionally horde prototype content then charge outrageous money for it need to go. I only hope a dev kit for Spartacus Legends releases so I can finally revive the community for that game. Doesn't even need to be an early build.

Sony continues to show its ass as one of the most disgusting companies involved in gaming today, which would be one thing if they were just a developer, but they're legit one of the biggest enterprises in the industry. How did the community let things get this bad to the point where they're nullifying entire digital ecosystems? This is beyond abhorrent behavior, and it only serves as more evidence for why games as a service and abrasive DRM should be avoided at all costs.

Preserve your games. Backup everything.

I don't know how many of you are Vita owners, but a channel I quite enjoy posted a video specifically addressing the closure of the Vita store and offers solutions on what you made do to avoid losing your games. Even if you aren't particularly affected by this or have general reservations against modding your device, I strongly recommend you do it anyway. Sony has proven they don't give a shit about you or the Vita anymore, so why should you care about them?

i think them being Japanese is playing into that whole "not saving there legacy" thing same with nintendo.

This is legitimately one of the most disgusting elements of Japanese culture(?) and one I've been unfortunate enough to intimately experience. I know it's a tad off-topic, but this same sort of nonsense is rampant in the v-tubing industry. Any v-tuber who graduates (i.e. ceases their activity) generally either privatizes or deletes their entire catalog of videos, meaning if one did not archive their work, it is effectively lost for good. This sort of erasure of history is just mind-boggling to me and to see an entire culture just condone this is beyond infuriating. It's bad enough it's common in Japan but I'm starting to see this poisonous mindset fester in Western environments as well.

Without getting too philosophical here, humans may be fleeting beings, but our ability to create and add to the world is what ensures our permeance in the grand scheme of things. There's absolutely no justifiable reason for why content should be disappeared. It's counter-intuitive to the reason why we bother in the first place.

It's just too much, man. :gura-pain:

i think there is a word for it but can't find it.

As somebody who actually owns a Vita (albeit its only use was to play Persona 4 Golden....which is on PC now sorta making its purpose null in that sense), at the very least I now have an excuse to turn it into a homebrew machine. All I need to do is get an SD card for the damn thing and then I can install Enso and shit so I can have CFW and of course be able to play shit like Taiko no Tatsujin V Version with relative ease.
