it's shit like that why I stopped watching dubs for the most part, because while English dubs can be a mixed bag.

TBH one of the problems I have with dubs even bigger than just being woke or being inferior to original is because these fucking VAs just sound the fucking same. It doesn't matter if it is a fantasy anime or comedy anime or whatever. The main protags from Psychicic K (or whatever it is called) with Haganai I don't have many friends have the same VOICES! No change, nothing.I had to stop watching them and I had to come up with more batman shit to get anime subs to work on tv then. Hell, I even never got to that meme with "big brudder juicy dick" thing memed by anime youtube channels with "funny meme compilations" or smth like that; because I was so fed up with just that one thing. BETTER, I never continued even when when the show had (well kinda, we don't have the emoji for the flat chest here, treat it as a supplement) and the fanservice with other waifus or those two cute lolis (the chunibyuu vampire(her fancervice scenes were) and the priestess one). Man I'm so pissed again.
Also: Gundam is right. Pirate the fuck out of these western parasites.

The vast majorities of anime I watched were subbed, but it is noticeable that the voice acting sounds too similar to one another.

It is a shame because from time to time there are great dubs. To me, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood was a masterpiece both in Japanese and English.

I would agree, but I can't think of any in recent memory. Modern anime dubs are either flawed as a result of very poor performances, voice-matching, or other more nefarious reasons.

The best dubs of all time generally came out decades ago; Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Hellsing Ultimate and as you mention Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Each of these are products of a better time where dubbing were taken more seriously and largely (at least to my knowledge) free from malicious political influences. With the fact that anime has never been more relevant in the western sphere, I cannot for the life of me understand why we aren't getting better performances.

Actually, looking back at that list, it's very surprising that these titles are more or less in the same realm of anime: mature and action-themed. Has there ever been a slice-of-life or comedy English dub that was better than merely passable?

I'd also like to emphasize that my musings only take into consideration English dubs and not those in any other language, as I truthfully have no idea how those have been and are currently performing.

That is indeed an interesting point.

It's been years since I last watched a full episode of any anime dubbed in any language other than (occasionally) English and Japanese so I wouldn't be able to provide an accurate perspective either.

Well, usually the most popular ones get the "best" eng dubs out there because these companies can't sacrifice their golden cows. But they let their friends in the industry direct dubs for the anime shows that are comedies or not really well-known (and then we get all the shenanigans with irl-cringe-politics or milquetoast memes in them lol). That, and I think that they don't really care too much about the quality. I think that "the right amount" of quality for them is enough not to give better performance.

I think the Jojo English dubs were good, but I can see people's gripe on it, mainly for name changes because copyright BS. Same copyright still applies for English subs as well, even during the Joestar Radio Event on YouTube, it had to follow the English localization ones. Another example of differences in sub and dub would definitely be Hetalia. English subtitles with Japanese dub is more cutesy, but English has stereotypes and more. And that's when Funimation had the license.

Just sort of wish there is a balance for the subs and dubs when it comes to translations. Like keep a close translation, but the delivery can still be good in a new way.

I come from the future, and subbing has gotten so much worse now because of the amount of racist xenophobic narcs lurking in the indsutry.
