I've never understood the lore of the Touhou series. Some characters looked pretty good, but most seem pretty generic.

I sadly don't play as much as I should, which I really regret since Wily Beast's OST is pretty good and I really liked what I played of it.

Haven't really looked at Unconnected Marketeers yet though, despite it being out for about a year.

Our time is now. :meguwoke:

Respect to the esteemed Yukari enjoyer for getting things rolling. :flan-yea:

all I know about Touhou is the porn.
which is pretty good.
Hell yeah, brother. There's no end to its greatness. :nep-smug2:

This is one thing I like about mega-series like Touhou; there's at least something for everyone to enjoy. Hell, that's even true with the characters given there's hundreds of the them.

For one, while I'm not very big on the games themselves, everything else is very much to my enjoyment, particularly the artwork and music.

Particularly subjective in both takes, but that's fair. I don't think the lore of the series was ever meant to be its big-hitter. I like it myself, though pretty much everything is expanded upon by fans in some respect or another, so it's not as if you have to solely rely on the canon.

Certainly get on that as soon as possible! :hyper-ro-img:

It's so fantastic to me that games are even still being released to this day. Touhou has existed in four separate decades and doesn't show any sign of slowing down. Gotta love it!

Also that they are mostly developed by one guy that last time I checked has a basic 9 to 5 office job.

Can share that sentiment! Even if there is a lack of Yukari stuff out there (but some of the stuff of her is god-tier e.g. Bucketheadero's animations:lick-left:)

With the release of the nineteenth game last week, known as Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost, I'd like to revive this thread and help people get into the franchise.

If you would like to start playing the games, you have a few good choices. The first is to play the first game for Windows, known as The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil; this is when the franchise took a soft reboot after the PC-98 games and it features some of the most recognizable characters in the whole series, including the maid Izayoi Sakuya and the ice fairy Cirno. It's about an average difficulty of a Touhou game, but it was meant to be an introduction for Windows players and a new beginning so it's generally considered to be not too bad. Another option is Imperishable Night, the 8th game in the series and considered one of the easiest to beat. For a personal favorite I've started my journey with the tenth entry, Mountain of Faith, which has turned out to be a good starting point as well as being the first entry available on Steam. Of course, you can find all the games for free on moriyashrine.org as well as english patches on touhouwiki.net for ease of use.

There is a lot more to the Touhou Project besides the games, of course. There are several official manga series you can read; I have been recommended Touhou Suzunaan ~ Forbidden Scrollery as well as Touhou Ibara Kasen ~ Wild and Horned Hermit. Both are considered to be a good place to start for newcomers, as others assume you know the events of specific games.

If you have engaged with particular media and enjoyed, don't hesitate to chime in! Recommend what you like and let's encourage more exploration of the wonderful world of Gensokyo!

Man I really didn't keep up with the games in recent times. I just don't have enough time to get good at them.

I also would recommend Touhou 15 which has the whole checkpoint system. It's great, because for a beginner it's far less frustrating when you aren't stuck repeating tge same few stages and are just able to move on / retry the part that gave you trouble.

The benefit of Touhou games, as well as the shoot-em-up genre as a whole, is that you don't really need to "keep up". Most people grind a handful of the games for score or survival, and that's how you improve not only in those games but in all games as this genre is a cornerstone of video games.

Most Touhou games also include a practice section, which lets you go straight to stages you've already beat but haven't mastered. This is especially important for mastery and can help you improve on that one boss before going for another full run.

My favorite is Flandre Scarlet because she is a cute loli! I really love Touhou 19, I like that ran is now a playable character. Some of the roster feels a bit underpowered like aunn and some other characters.

I see that you like Bucketheadero's animations! Which one is your favorite? I enjoyed the Momiji tailjob animation and some of the ran ones.
