What distro do you use?

I use Debian, but dealing with apt is making me want to switch to a rolling release distribution.

artix, arch without systemd. only real gripe with it is the calamares installer; can't specify what encryption cipher to use if you chose to encrypt your drive so it uses the default aes-xts cipher, and the xfce version has 2 lockscreens that will softlock your system without switching to another tty and killing it, or turning it off in xfce's settings. been pretty solid in terms of updates at least, and no breakage in my 3 months of using it so far besides kernel 5.11 not making my system boot

Have you heard of NixOS?

Been on it for 3, maybe 4, years now. Only real gripe is the learning curve.
Had trouble setting up the Pharo VM. Spent quite some time understanding and switching to flakes.
Aside from that I never had breakages (outside updating my configuration.nix to breaking changes, but I'm always on unstable, so clearly this is not something I mind), once I had stuff setup, like an env for a particular language, it's piss easy to continue.
Used to be an anti-systemd person. But with nix I don't mind, it's a tradeoff that's well worth it imo.

If I could be bothered to figure out exactly what kind of PCI-whatever card goes into the aging Dell OptiPlex 3010 DT I use as my sole computer, I'd switch from Windows 7 to Devuan XFCE in a heartbeat... (I basically can't use the Atheros AR5B195 WLAN card I bought specifically for Linux because it doesn't fit in the slot properly...

Yeah, I'm really a noob with this stuff, me and computers don't really gel like they probably do for most of you. >_<

Well I'm gonna replace the battery in an old laptop I have and then use it to run linux. Despite running the server I've got basically no clue on what distros to use, so any suggestions on what distro to install?

A Debian-like distro is a good option for starters. It must just work out of box.
Next, if you want a distro fully customized, you can go to Arch or Gentoo but both are more complicated.

In my case, the distro I'm using is Devuan (a Debian without systemd).

I put fedora on everything, easy to install and privacy friendly. Another alternative is manjaro (the not so autistic to install arch), if the laptop is slow try it with the xfce desktop-

I still have my Arch machine from when I did an internship at Intel. I basically took all the settings I customized the OS with from the workplace (esp. for i3) and then made my work machine without the company stuff. Personally, I love my Arch setup, but I'm still a relative Linux noobie. Unfortunately, I haven't used it in a very long time.

Admittedly, I just regressed to using Windows because it had everything I used on a daily basis there: Krita (drawing app), Wacom tablet functionality, Unity, Steam games, etc. Fortunately, Visual Studio and VSC have vi plugins, so I can still code the way I always did on Linux.

aaaah that time where the maintainer of void linux went AWOL for like 6 months, and nobody else in the org had access to the main repo, the DNS and whatnot.
fun times. They did learn the hard way about fault tolerance.
