What distro do you use?

wtf

I use Debian, but dealing with apt is making me want to switch to a rolling release distribution.

artix, arch without systemd. only real gripe with it is the calamares installer; can't specify what encryption cipher to use if you chose to encrypt your drive so it uses the default aes-xts cipher, and the xfce version has 2 lockscreens that will softlock your system without switching to another tty and killing it, or turning it off in xfce's settings. been pretty solid in terms of updates at least, and no breakage in my 3 months of using it so far besides kernel 5.11 not making my system boot

Have you heard of NixOS?
Nix-girl.png

Been on it for 3, maybe 4, years now. Only real gripe is the learning curve.
Had trouble setting up the Pharo VM. Spent quite some time understanding and switching to flakes.
Aside from that I never had breakages (outside updating my configuration.nix to breaking changes, but I'm always on unstable, so clearly this is not something I mind), once I had stuff setup, like an env for a particular language, it's piss easy to continue.
Used to be an anti-systemd person. But with nix I don't mind, it's a tradeoff that's well worth it imo.

If I could be bothered to figure out exactly what kind of PCI-whatever card goes into the aging Dell OptiPlex 3010 DT I use as my sole computer, I'd switch from Windows 7 to Devuan XFCE in a heartbeat... (I basically can't use the Atheros AR5B195 WLAN card I bought specifically for Linux because it doesn't fit in the slot properly...

Yeah, I'm really a noob with this stuff, me and computers don't really gel like they probably do for most of you. >_<

Well I'm gonna replace the battery in an old laptop I have and then use it to run linux. Despite running the server I've got basically no clue on what distros to use, so any suggestions on what distro to install?

A Debian-like distro is a good option for starters. It must just work out of box.
Next, if you want a distro fully customized, you can go to Arch or Gentoo but both are more complicated.

In my case, the distro I'm using is Devuan (a Debian without systemd).

I put fedora on everything, easy to install and privacy friendly. Another alternative is manjaro (the not so autistic to install arch), if the laptop is slow try it with the xfce desktop-

I still have my Arch machine from when I did an internship at Intel. I basically took all the settings I customized the OS with from the workplace (esp. for i3) and then made my work machine without the company stuff. Personally, I love my Arch setup, but I'm still a relative Linux noobie. Unfortunately, I haven't used it in a very long time.

Admittedly, I just regressed to using Windows because it had everything I used on a daily basis there: Krita (drawing app), Wacom tablet functionality, Unity, Steam games, etc. Fortunately, Visual Studio and VSC have vi plugins, so I can still code the way I always did on Linux.

i use arch btw

but i'm gonna have a brand new pc coming and i'm planning to install void linux in it. i've been wanting to try swaywm + wayland, plus a distro without systemd and pulseaudio.

aaaah that time where the maintainer of void linux went AWOL for like 6 months, and nobody else in the org had access to the main repo, the DNS and whatnot.
fun times. They did learn the hard way about fault tolerance.

For my daily use machines I use MXLinux. It's easy and fast to install and it worked on most devices I've tried it on so far.
Other than that I started to get into Slackware. If I had time I would probably install it on my main for a while.

two (2) years later, i've gone off the deep end and installed alpine on a laptop, and OBSD on the desktop, both used daily

Honestly windows updates broke my system more than I have. I just keep a stock Win10 install (with updates disabled) for those once a year events where I need it.
windows is my daily, idk the last time i updated.
If you want to try something similarly autistic I can recommend Slack without thirdparty package managers.
no, never again. I just use these cause people called them hard and I wanted to see if anything in my brain would get light up.

turns out I simply am not autistic enough to care about this shit.

This entire Levels of linux distro memes are just memes.

If you just want a good distro to get away from Windows, then Fedora is pretty much the best you can get (you can pretty much dismiss most other recommendations). It can be fun to dig into the deep end from time to time, but you won't learn more from Gentoo than from Ubuntu.
For me personally if I wouldn't have switched after the EOL of 7 I would've certainly switched after the EOL of 10. I don't want to get too far into it, but Windows 11 is an absolute mess and I don't believe that this will ever change with any future version.

I don't wanna get away from windows :shinobu_kaka: I like it, it does everything I want.
I just use Linux on my laptops cause... I don't do anything important on them

Understandable and valid. But just in case anybody reads the thread. My recommendation stands and likely wont change.
