What do you think about the magical girl genre?

Magical Girl in case you may not be aware, its a form of fantasy where girls are often chosen to have magical superpowers (often with alter egos). With much of the main plot being around stopping the bad guys and saving the world.

Some of it is cute and cheery while others like Madoka and even Sailor Moon has had its own dark moments. And there's many great shows to choose from.

So what kind of magical girl series that you like?

I haven't watched many, I think the only ones I watched were exactly the "deconstructions", like Madoka Magica and Magical Girl Raising Project.
Then again, I should start watching more anime.

I think you left out its main feature, which is the henshin or transformations with their characteristic sequences.

Well, someone already beat me to it, it was precisely this genre that I had in mind for the next post.
I like Mahou Shoujo, however I haven't seen many, curiously it's an iconic genre with big franchises representing it, also as a fun fact almost all the typical otakus that are shown in anime happen to be fans to some anime parody or reference to this genre [mainly referencing Precure], however the genre is quite scarce lately.

Next to Precure the most iconic are probably Madoka and Sailor Moon.
and madoka is undoubtedly a masterpiece, a series that revolutionized the general idea of mahou shoujo.
it's funny that as popular as this franchise is, it has so little anime so far, although it seems that shaft is getting a little bit more involved with this franchise lately.
I'm excited to see the first previews of Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten,
shaft is practically my favorite studio, akiyuki shinbo one of my favorite directors and Yuki kaijura my favorite composer and all of them are thanks to Madouka Magica, to see all of them and the great scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi come together for another madoka project and especially a movie is mind-blowing.
I know this movie is going to be amazing

However, another mahou shoujo that captivated me when I saw it was Mahou shoujo Site, although it has some points of criticism, I think the anime is quite good and has an excellent production.
and the opening of this series is excellent :sayorifingerguns:
the genre has felt stagnant in the same franchises in the last few years, I hope the release of the madouka movie will give some impetus to new mahou shoujo projects in the future. [well this could also be my idea, as I said I haven't seen many mahou shoujo so I'm not really sure]

I have seen quite a few magical girls' shows, like sailor moon, princess tutu & Madoka Magica as examples.
the reason why I liked them is I like shoujo shit and there like the female version of a super sentai which I also like.
plus my stepdad's sales pitch for watching sailor moon was hay you like anime right, try sailor moon it's got girls that die & get raped by monsters, teenage me thought this sounded awesome as fuck.

I can't get into it. I watched Nanoha season 1+2 but the slice of life we're cutesy best friends forever crap is boring, I just wanted to see the limited lewds. The same for Prisma Illya. I've only skimmed the show, I know the plot but I really just want to see more of what the 2wei OVA provided. I did watch the 1st season of Madoka Magica but didn't get why it was so special beyond the cute girls die.

If you want me to complete a magical girl show at this point it better be borderline hentai from start to finish.
