Please help me i cant understand this article because oliver jia has blaustein's circumcised dick stuck in his mouth
TL:DR Reading through this he is basically stating that he understands the problems everyone is having, does not believe A.I will solve all the issues, and being vocal and doing Fantl works will help as a whole. But i would argue with him that demanding A.I and a high quality editor will solve everything and the entire Japanese Localization scene will heal, whether it's away from America into SEA, or in Japan or if it stays in America but pays for professionals that understand to translate the works as they are and not trying to push in random things due to boredom.

The Long Version My Reply:

The thing is this proves that Alexander O Smith is not a good translator and did not know Japanese well enough to be able to translate it well into English, so he kind of played it by trying to make it more American with jokes that American audiences would like. This was understandable back in the day, but it is not long lasting appeal and nobody knows much about Ace Attorney today. Ask yourself, do Youtubers really talk about Ace Attorney? Is there cosplays on Ace Attorney? Does anyone really remember Phoenix Wright despite having an Anime and being pushed in Capcom's other games? Not really, Danganronpa is more iconic than Phoenix Ace Attorney series and will continue to be remembered far longer unless Ace Attorney can get a true authentic translation that shines a bright light on the writing. Also the excuses are very familiar, jokes among the fanbase is kind of the problem as it's kind of an irony when saying something is made for a wide audience, but only is for a smaller audience than themselves. It's made to be a niche product that caters to inside jokes among it's own localizer audience who ends up defending bad decisions because they do not know what good translations look like. I also think Jia misunderstands that the jokes are meant to not only poke fun, but to criticize how bad the translations are. Also it's ironic considering that bad translations kill a games longevity and it ends up being more difficult for fans to attach themselves to a series that betrays the writing of the original author who is talented.

234223434326.png

On the topic for generalization, it's fair to generalize when 98% of Video Games have awful translations that betray characters, story narratives, and things that people read. They are paid to do the job of making something that is authentic to the work and ensure people like it so much they will rebuy it over and over again due to the high quality translation. Manga & Anime, it's not as much due to standards being higher, and also because it's easier to rewrite something from that, than it is to undue something from Video Games. A.I should become a thing, due to the trust between Localization/Translation and Consumer's being at an all time low. Unicorn Overlord, Eiyuden Chronicle, even TWEWY is weighing the whole industry down for Video Games. Viz Media on Manga still censors to this day, and acts like it's the 1990's were all of us are kids still we need to be vocal about these things. Also speaking of A.I

44533454554354339.png

The irony is the Manga example is not much different from the human example, plus as he notes and debunks himself. There is an Editor to look it over and to make it flow better. So it's obvious A.I is actually getting good enough to do Manga in it's current state without much staff to translate on it, this also will most likely take hold in Light Novels because it's just text. As for the Censorship of localization, Japan has known about this since forever they know it exists, reminder of Vampire Of Rosario from Viz Media is censored, Pokemon was censored for the longest time until recently if someone can correct me on that, there is jokes from Japanese Manga authors that laugh and point at America for being so "free" but yet we still have these issues on Political Correctness and are not able to speak our mind. This is one part of the equation and the other is which he is lightly trying to paint a bad picture here, is that it is to "cut corners" indicating bad quality, when the reality is everyone benefits and wins.
1. The Customer has a product that is authentic closer to the Japanese script, especially if there is an Editor that cares.
2. Less time to translate and to be put on the market
3. Less people to pay, Editor get's paid more to do a better job and so will be more focused.
4. Savings are great for both the Customer, The Company and everyone else involved. It may even help Inflation prices.
5. A.I will become better in time and actually learn to make things flow better. There is way too much money in this industry to go back and so the quality will rise due to this with R&D and critics being supportive.

It's not really cutting corners and nobody benefits in this current paradigm, 49% it's censored, 49% the localizer decides to completely mess everything up thus causing close to 100% failure rate. Also this guy does not understand that you will see Nintendo, Atlus and every other Japanese studio will begin to use it. Because of the fact

Nintendo1.png

Budgets are rising, Costs are rising, and companies like Nintendo and Atlus are seeing the same thing for Switch 2, the demand for better software, better graphics is going to become a thing even if it is going on last generation graphics and performance. They have to keep their ROI high now. So they are going to look to cut costs wherever they can. The solution is going to be A.I moving forward with an Editor. They will even begin to use it in other things to keep costs low, like Textures, Coding, Advertising, Optimization, even if it is early days they will begin to experiment with it because people are vocal about it and they are willing to put up with something subpar if it's closer to the Japanese text than something that strays further away from it and disrespects the text and has censorship.

TL:DR If something is good enough without censorship, people buy it and like it because it's better than what currently exists right now, they will do so. It's why Fantranslations are popular or Scan Translations, it's due to a lack of trust and low standards it's obvious that it's warranted.

If it can be good enough they will just move it to SEA or Japan. Why would they need America in a Globalized Economy? I mean there are plenty of people that are bilingual and can be an editor nowadays, it does not need to be within America. Or if it is in America, they can actually afford to pay for someone of greater quality that can translate manuscripts and look over the work and make it flow better as a whole. My point is that they will cut costs and pay better for talent, while reaping in profits for themselves.

This is the heart of what he is trying to say. But i would argue that this is cynical thinking. Japan already knows, Everyone being vocal online already knows, the localizers that are doing their jobs know this is not an ideal situation. But being apprehensive about technology prevents us from seeing the benefits as a whole. It's just we need to begin to have standards, we need to stop accepting bad translations, censorship from these types as "the way it is" because Standards should be higher as things become more popular, lowering the standard makes it unpopular long term. Also for companies that refuse to have better standards, we need to stop buying the games or pirate them, or to rally around and re-translate better through fantl. We also need to realize the potential for A.I to be a tool to help things move forward and see it's evolution in the industry. Even if Localization companies decide tomorrow that they will use A.I and take it over with an awful editor to make it worse, fantranslations will have the same technology and be able to compete on an even playing field. A.I is open to everyone, and i am sure some of us here would fund companies or help out smaller translators who need the funds for it.

Also he ends off by saying that
1. Be vocal(absolutely correct) about your displeasure of the translations from Anime, Video Games, Manga and Light Novels, the more people are like this the more companies have to listen. Bullying and applying pressure works.
2. Try to Fan translate works, become an Echo for what great translations can look like(good point)
3. He has been learning Japanese for a decade and does use MTL with Hooks to help with his Japanese learning
3. "someone whose job it is to professionally translate shouldn’t be suggesting that one learn Japanese as a retort to criticism of their work." and ends with this image.

I would also add to call for A.I Translations and an Editor from Japan, SEA or someone that actually is higher quality than what we have currently. Localization Studios need to be taken to task to do a better job and not a lazy job. Too much money is flowing into Japanese content, and catering to a smaller audience is not a good idea, catering to the Global Niche is the greater idea.

Reading through these localizer's cocksuckers replies gave me a headache. It's like trying to argue with someone totally devoid of sound logic.
Unfortunately they think these people are their friend and so that means all criticism is absolved. The understanding should be that, things are bad, they need to get better, and the quality needs to keep up with what people are paying for. No way am i going to keep paying 70$ for games when the localizations have not kept up in quality and the censorship exists either way or both in these games.

I mentioned on the Neku's Shibuya Underground discord server (server for The World Ends With You series) that the orange AI startup is translating 500 manga a month and I said I supported this. The mods of the server threatened to ban me unless I agreed with them that localisers aren't vandalising games. I refused so they banned me.

They banned you, because they know you are right, and their jobs are up next on the chopping block and actions like this prove why it's needed to have AI in the translation industry.

The server mods aren't localisers but I'm 100% convinced the person I argued with first is a localiser because she is extremely defensive of localisers and always referred to them as "they" but about a month ago she said "We" when talking about localisers. She also apparently learned Japanese.

It's always how they are, they are interconnected and nepotistic. Would not surprise me that even if they are not localizers, they have connections to industries above localizers. It's how these people pretend to "know" Japanese and use credibility of authority, but when you look at the results it's worse than any professional in other industries especially Manuscripts or News Articles.

I messaged a localizer defender and he dismissed all the evidence on here that localisers are fucking with scripts.
This is an extremist leftist. They always use the strawman, Ad-Hominem, bad faith arguments and the classical projection technique when they are in the wrong and know they will be kicked in easily(do not be fooled extremist right wingers do the same thing as well). The best part about this is when they try to use credibility in an argument and use the whole "I know a person who knows a person" rather than trying to disprove the argument above because they do not know Japanese. They know they do not have much to stand on. It's essentially "Trust Me Bro" or trusting someone who says they went to Stanford or Harvard for their doctorate, performed open heart surgery and were the top of their class, but has thousands of reviews on various sites, with lawsuits proving them wrong to the contrary. This is why i do not argue or would not argue with them, due to the cultist "us vs them mentality" if they can not argue without being facetious it already means victory comes sooner than later. They will ban all doubters, any arguments, and dismiss everyone who even dares to slightly disagree to do better as XYZ.

For me i would just post articles on AI Translations overall and how much i like them for the convenience factor on Twitter and Discord to make it clear, their career is on the chopping block, either do a good job, or be replaced. Speaking of AI, Samsung came out with their AI Translate, Interpreter for calls and texts.

Also Google in their keynote is doing the same thing with Gemini. So many companies are beginning to put billions into it now.

I will say this is amazing honestly. AI Translations are coming sooner than later. No more arguing with localizers who are political in nature, no more memespeak, no more politics in my games. Give it a few years, more updates and more feedback. Eventually we will begin to see this just be automatic. Too much money is at stake and too many people desire it to want to turn back the clock, even if in a few years it's not better than a human translator, it is better than a politically motivated and mediocre one who larps as a professional and tells everyone else to go learn Japanese by being disrespectful on criticism.
