Anime News Network embarrassing interviews

nihi

varishangout.com
ANN recently interviewed Naoko Yamada, legendary director of moe anime (K-on, Hibike! Euphonium, Tamako Market and Liz and the blue bird) They embarrassed themselves yet again. Here are the highlights:

Asking if K-on being a show aimed at men was a myth, getting a reply that it was indeed aimed at dudes
FhFy_GXWYAAMq3P

Asking if Yamada's intention was to set a trend of cute girls doing cute stuff, getting a very uncomfortable reaction and a normal reply because trends are sometimes organic and not astroturfed by execs like in the west

Wanting to make Yamada say "gay rights", she refused yet again (she has refused before in another ANN interview)
FhGOPYGXEAM0iYG

Trying to make Naoko YYamada say the reason she decided on chubby girls in her film is due to activism, gets a reply that's due to chubby girls feeling more real "as if u could touch them"
FhGPSniWQAAJV9O

Cornering yamada now saying BUT HERE IN THIS FILM YOU SAID IT WAS A ROMANTIC STORY WHY YOU DONT SAY THE SAME ABOUT THIS 2 GIRLS. SAY GAY RIGHTS PLEASE PLEASE

They've been doing this for a while. There is an interview with the staff that worked on Megalobox 2 and they added toxic masculinity in the "translation" when it wasn't even mentioned in the original. Manhood is not toxic masculinity. They did mention patriarchy and machismo, I'll give them that much. But I don't trust ANN at all.

They even phrased the part about Joe being a man differently. It's sad when deepl makes more sense than your shitty attempts at localization. Of course, Lynzee and Kim went on defense mode when they were called out.

Even in the forums, someone pointed this out and Lynzee went on a rant and attacked a lesbian feminist. What a bad bisexual leftist you are, Lynzee. Isn't this called gaslighting? What an ugly cunt. They're still keeping this up with the Kadokawa purchase of the site. They recently had a stream talking shit about Vic and whining about Final Fantasy isn't diverse enough.

ANN is the anime equivalent of Kotaku, IGN, etc., and other MSM games media.

their credibility has been in the shitter for years and the writers are heavily biased. Frog Kun is a prime offender and I feel has done enough bullshit and said enough dumb shit for them to get their own dedicated thread if someone was dedicated enough to active their greatest hits

one I recall that I dont have on hand was when the whole 7seas LN censorship was going on frog did an article on it where they tried to play soft defence for their localizer buddies, even tho it was clear the people at 7seas was caught red-handed with there hands in the cookie jar the fucker still jumped hoops to try and downplay the issue

and this is not even talking about the reviews and how the writers will autistically screech about anything with fanservice or even a hint of booba in it, a lot of the dumb fuck attitudes we see online around these topics can prob be traced back to ANN

The only reason ANN is worth a shit is for their encyclopedia. something that should be scraped and copied to form a proper alternative so ANN can be ditched and forgotten

I know which article you're talking about and it definitely defends and paints the localizers as victims that are overworked, despite deliberately fucking up the translations and rewriting elements they don't like. Here's an archive of the article: https://archive.ph/uR52e

The funniest part is that they cover anything anime and manga related. From dumb articles focusing on Matt Walsh claiming that anime is "satanic" to Kanye West mentioning Akira while arguing about his divorce with Kim Kardashian. They'll cover this, but not the fact that Seven Seas was called out by scanlators and even the creator of the "I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into a Girl" manga for incorrectly making a character trans. The translation was incorrect and not what the creator intended for the story. This lead to Seven Seas making a statement and eventually reprinting a corrected version of the manga. Even Katrina Leonoudakis doubled down and defended the critiques about the localization because she states that the translator consulted with trannies about a story about a crossdresser. Funny thing is that this was never covered by ANN. Sure, they covered the Seven Seas union and did three articles about that but they couldn't take the time to cover this.

Also, let's not forget how they worked with Daman Mills and his sexual harassment article. He was claiming to kill himself if they published the article and emotionally manipulated ANN when they informed him about what was going to be written, but they didn't even bother doing the same to Vic. Fuck ANN. Zac drank himself to death, Lynzee is an ugly woman who think she's a teenager going through a wiccan phase and Justin Sevakis is an insufferable faggot.

Making a statement _of_ eventually reprinting. There's no ETA yet for the revised version and considering how long they're taking to fix the "Regarding Saeki Sayaka" series though maybe they're lying about re-editing that one, I don't expect a re-release for a good while.
That made me no longer support them. Shitty localization and censorship was the last straw and it's a shame since I've purchased a lot of their manga releases.

They're a rag plain and simple.

They just want to interview the artist so they can get them to say some dumb or controversial shit, so then they can plaster it in the title of their article And get the clicks, they dont care about the artist in question or even the topics they cover, all they care is to get people attention

This. The recent Vice media kicking up a fuss against loli manga is yet another testament that these nutjobs aim for moral panic without any respect whatsoever to others' culture despite having a pro stance on diversity and inclusion.

Anime News Network is basically just a relic of its time and its really showing in its interviews how out of touch and miserable these people really are that nobody is taking them seriously at all anymore.
