Sorry to disappoint, but I actually think quite highly of Three Hopes - as mentioned at one point in this writeup, Three Hopes actually confirmed a number of my personal headcanons, though those were admittedly primarily concerned with the Blue Lions characters. As for Claude and Edelgard being mischaracterized, I think Claude is debatable, though I will argue that even if you don't think Claude specifically would act like he does in Hopes, going by the guy we get to know in Houses, the *type* of character that Claude is would definitely be liable to do the things that Three Hopes Claude does. I'll go more in-depth in my Three Hopes writeup, but I do think Claude in that game is a very compelling character - as long as you accept him as a villain protagonist with good PR.
As for Edelgard, my main issue with her characterization is quite frankly that the prologue makes her out to be TOO competent. The way she's able to completely abandon Hubert's original plans and instantly purge the empire of the mole people with seemingly zero negative repercussions doesn't make sense to me, and makes both Hubert AND Three Houses Edelgard look really bad for not just having done this themselves, if it was actually this easy to pull off. In makes even less sense when you consider how the rest of Three Hopes confirms that Hubert is one of the smartest, most competent characters in the game. Edelgard meanwhile I've always viewed as being comparable to Dimitri - a well-educated royal of above average intelligence, but certainly not this super genius or master strategist. Hell, Byleth is able to achieve more on the battlefield in 5 months that Edelgard was able to do in 5 years.
Edelgard does have it pretty bad in Three Hopes Dimitri's route, but that's not so much mischaracterization as her getting screwed over by circumstances outside of her control. Plus, given all the deaths her war has caused, it's hard to argue that her fate in that specific route is completely undeserved.
There is only one character in Three Hopes that I do consider straight up badly written, but she's effectively a new character. As for the returning cast, the only one I truly question the characterization of is Bernadetta, who at points seems like a caricature of her Three Houses self, with little of the empathy, nuance and humanity that defined some of her best Supports in Three Houses, like her B-Support with Ferdinand:
But even that is arguably justified, because Three Hopes only has a 2-year timeskip, while Three Houses jumps ahead a whole 5 years, so Bernie in Three Hopes would have had a lot less time to work out her issues than her Three Houses self.
Also, the Three Hopes writeup will be posted later today, and next week I'll put up my writeup for Engage!
