Imgur has announced that they will Tumblr themselves and ban all porn and anything "NSFW" from their service, as well as purge every image from inactive/unregistered accounts on May 15th.

The company said the reason they're doing this is because explicit content "formed a risk to Imgur's community and business", and disallowing it would "protect the future of the Imgur community". Of course, this is all bullshit, and it's speculated the real reason is due to Reddit going IPO and wanting a "cleaner" image. Reddit itself will likely also follow suit as they will soon ban NSFW from being accessed from their API (and thus all third party apps). They have said that "artistic nudity" will still be allowed. It is worth noting that NSFW has been shadowbanned on Imgur since 2018, but the website still allowed it until now.

This purge will likely cause insane amounts of link rot throughout the entire internet.

If you have any images, and you don't want to see them disappear, back them up now.

This is certainly concerning. Now I cant speak for the imgur community as I dont know anything about it. But if there is one thing that can make twatter even worse is having reddit reffugees come to that site:akko_sus:.
So hopefully you are wrong about them also banning nsfw content.

that said Im curious if they would actually go to twitter. Back when tumblr banned nsfw content it was pretty obvious that most people would move to twitter. Tumblr and reddit hated each other and other image sharing sites that allowed nsfw stuff might have been ro obscure for the "average" tumblr user to know of.

But now that its become trendy to hate on twitter, I do wonder how many actually will migrate their content over there, and those that wont where would they go? :anime-think:

I remember when imgur didn't have a stupid community and was just an image hosting site. That's all I've ever used it for.
I'm a boomer so I remember when it was actually made. And the reason it got made was because every other image hosting site was shit, loaded with ads, required registration, and disallowed hotlinking. Imgur was unironically a big deal when it first came out as it lacked all of those things.

Too bad it's become the exact thing it wanted to destroy.

Maybe only tangentially related to the topic but I swear all these attempts to "cleanse" the internet to make it more "safe" just end up doing the opposite as people are forced into the darker corners of the net. Like people deemed too extreme are then forced to go underground where things can actually get dangerous from not being able to freely express things and creating an adversary. Idk things are just messed up and this is just one more thing.

This the slippery slope we've been talking about. They're pretending that this is about fighting child abuse or exploitation, but what's really happening is that it's all about control. What's really devious is that most of the talk about the purge is fixated on the porn and not the millions of images and videos that are about to be wiped out all because it came from an anonymous poster.

Sadly the only way to get most people to care is to say the porn is going away.

Most people won't care until they are affected by it

good shit Imgur

I've never used this shit anyway
You have, and probably still do, you just don't know it. Most images on forums, reddit, even discord, are posted from imgur.

The amount of damage this will do to the internet will be felt for decades to come. This will essentially be the equivalent of YouTube shutting down but with images instead of videos.

It is quite different.
Youtube is a place where you can find almost anything. Uploading videos to other platforms guarantee a lot less views, for contect creators.
You don't have to upload images to imgur though, you can use any other service without fear of losing followers etc.

I don't mean it's like YouTube in the sense that there isn't any viable competitor, I meant it in the sense that it's something everyone used up until very very recently, so them purging most old images will cause a lot of tutorials and art etc to be lost, I was being a bit hyperbolic about it being on par with YT shutting down, it's probably more on par with something like Reddit closing in terms of lost content

I know, I meant that I have never used it to post anything.

I've used it, but only to shitpost and take up their server memory. Obviously anonymously. It apparently also scraps exifdata automatically even though I don't trust that feature. Other image host will do just fine.
