The reason is mastercard's faggot ass got triggered over a troll title of some dude abusing a cat but actually taking care of it and demanded it be taken down or else niconico would lose access to their services.

That sounds to me that the clearly racist mastercard was just looking for any reason to give japan more shit since I don't recall niconico being infamous for hosting anything that would violate their retarded rules.

Additional news: paypal no longer works on DLsite, it was used to buy points to purchase their stuff. Other cards should still work for now, we know how this shit goes down. If paypal wasn't ok with us buying points, not any explicit titles then the remaining american cards are likely to take the same path.

News:

Niconico will begin restricting access to comply with ‘international circumstances’

Japanese video-sharing site Niconico Douga has announced that it is being forced to restrict access to certain content for overseas viewers to comply with what it calls: “recent social conditions, international circumstances”.

Payment processors like Visa and Mastercard have been throwing their weight around to censor online retailers and service providers. Anyone who uses Patreon is likely familiar with this already, as many content creators have been compelled to move to alternatives like SubscribeStar.

Earlier this year, Japanese digital retailer DLSite and image-sharing site Pixiv were hit with similar restrictions at the behest of payment processors. Prompting restrictions to what sort of fictional artwork they’re allowed to sell.

For now, Niconico’s restrictions appear to be solely for international viewers, and restrictions will apply when a viewer’s “access is determined to be from outside Japan”. You can read the full announcement here.
On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the Niconico Terms of Use and Niconico Action Guidelines will be partially revised.
Currently, Niconico’s terms and guidelines are set in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations.
With this revision, we will take into account not only Japanese laws but also recent social conditions, international circumstances, and foreign laws to ensure the continued operation of Niconico and the provision of its services.
Additionally, starting on the same day, October 30 (Wed), we will implement usage restrictions for certain services when access is determined to be from outside Japan.
We speculate that users will be able to bypass these restrictions with a commercially available VPN.

"Regarding the Review of the Scope of Regulations

The review of the scope of regulations for Niconico’s overall services will be gradually implemented starting from the revision date of the Niconico Terms of Use and Niconico Action Guidelines on “October 30, 2024 (Wed)” (hereinafter referred to as the “Revision Date”).

For example, for the content listed below, we will review the scope of regulations and take necessary measures, including deletion, based on a comprehensive evaluation.
Additionally, the scope of regulations will be updated in response to changes in social conditions, international situations, and amendments to laws and regulations both domestically and internationally.
・Content that appears to involve or depict the abuse, sexual exploitation, or sexual activity of children, child-like characters, or animals, as defined by the standards and laws of the country or region in which the content is accessed or posted.
・Content that is or appears to be intended for or involved in excessive violence, suicide, self-harm, promotion of terrorism, or manufacture or sale of illegal drugs or weapons
・Any other content that may violate the laws, rules, or regulations of the country or region in which it is accessed or posted.

Furthermore, the review of the scope of regulations will not be limited to the content itself but will also include comments and remarks related to such content in the future."

Japan is going nuclear on lolis. Btw Kadokawa involves itself with DEI.

niconico is a fucking JAPANESE site, why are they listening to fucking foreigners?

Their actions tell me it's only a matter of time until ishiba announces that he's going to completely fuck over anime/manga and related media for foreigners (a.k.a americans, canada, australia, uk) who always try to ruin fun shit. I was hoping that the second reason of MahoAko being announced was a good sign that maybe things wouldn't get too bad but clearly that wasn't to be.

It is precisely this attitude against people who just want to have fun for 1 hour or 2 that makes people so angry and comment/protest against the woke and against censorship. Can't even do what you want in your 4 walls after a day of work FFS. If they at least explained the reasons why things were fine for 30+years but not now at least, but no. Just no fun allowed. The worst part tho is that this is pushed by a private company. Who do those assholes think they are?! A government? And this happens ONLY with japanese content. This is an attempt to stifle competition.
