first and foremost, yes i know there's already a thread for shilling underrated games which you can find here: https://varishangout.com/index.php?threads/shilling-underrated-games.679/

however i'd like this thread to be something more general, a place where we can post all sorts of games either hidden gems from small studios or give our opinions on past hits in a sort of vaccum away from normies and their retarded opinions.

but i guess there's no better way to show what my intent is than to post some games myself right?

so first let's take a look at one indie title i've been playing for a long time

DEAD CELLS:
capsule_616x353.jpg

released back in 2018 man is this game fun.
i know some people here might not like the rouge-lite genre but this is one of the good examples of the genre.

in dead cells you'll be exploring 2d levels that are to some degree randomly generated, you have your usual goods like weapons both ranged and melee as well as shields, deployable turrets and all sorts of powers and skills both active and passive. all those technical details im sure you can get them from an actual review of the game but as a tldr everything in this game fits together perfectly.
everything in it comes together to make this snappy action packed 2d experience that rarely feels repetitive
i do have to warn that it's not an easy game quite te contrary it has quite a learning curve but that also means that you rely more on yourself than on rng

ok now that i've shown an indie let's talk about an older game the type of games that i mean when i say "past hits"

NINJA GAIDEN:
apps.63551.65292684070648119.ad98b5eb-291c-4d54-bdba-448d32cc1331.bbe4ae29-8727-469c-ba7e-f1d14bf94b2a

you probably already know about these games(hopefully) since they got a re-release not so long ago but still it doesn't quit the fact that at least the first two games are great with the third one being a questionable most of the time.

this series started as a sort of reboot for the old nes series this time being a 3d hack n slash similar to DMC however don't let that fool you ninja gaide plays way differently from the dmc games.
while the later has a way more flexible combat that lets you switch freely between weapons at any time ninja gaiden is a bit more rigid both in its bases and combos however even then the power and weight of every slash and hit you nail on your enemy feels great and the variety of weapons and ways to dismember those that stand in your path is diverse enough to keep you entertained along the story all the way from katanas to great swords to even nunchakus.
while dmc is more focused on styling ninja gaiden is more focused on what is the most efficient and fastest way to turn your enemies into sashimi and this also bleeds into part of the story and scenes of the game being a perfect blend between cool and edgy.
the only nitpick i have is the bosses that can be either ballbustingly hard or easy to cheese.

as final note on this series these games have had many releases that move and "tweak" the balance of things so if you want a list of which are the superior versions of each tittle here ya go:
-ninja gaiden: for this one you want to go for the "ninja gaiden black" version since not only does it keep the original balnce and weapons of the game but also adds some extra stuff

-ninja gaiden 2: for this one i think the original version is the best since it keeps the original number of enemies per stage(which was toned down in other re-releases) and it also has the superior gore physics, in this version everytime you finish a fight all you'll see is blood and body parts all over the place

-ninja gaide 3: i don't know why you want to play this one since it's the weakest entry in the series but in case you to i'd say the sigma ∑ version since this one actually fixes a lot of the issues the base game had, sadly it doesn't fixt the retarded story and interpretation of ryu

okay now that we covered both a somewhat popular indie and a AAA game from years past let's switch to a game i barely see being talked about

BLASTER MASTER ZERO:
1687892338107.png

heres a quetion for ya, have you ever wanted to ride a tank and travel through space killing all sorts of mutans besides your waifu?
then blaster master zero is the game for you.

blaster master is yet another reboot(yes i know how original) of an old series but god does it do a great job.
with a somewhat simplistic retro style in this game you'll find yourself traveling to all sorts of planets in order to destroy the mother of all mutants(the baddies in this game), a quite simple premise but a fun one nonetheless.

in regards to gameplay this series is a 2d metroidvania with a lot of the stuff borrowed from the original blaster master series.
you can either explore the overworld with the help of your tank and you can also enter cave systems and other dungeons where you'll play from a top-down perspective
71cdcKee3ZL._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg
Blaster-Master-Zero-III_2021_07-21-21_017.png

it's a fun time, a story that ticks pretty much every anime story box in the right way, gameplay that is fun and challenging and lovable characters, not quite a masterpiece but still pretty good and also with zero bugs which is an oddity nowadays

oh yeah there's also plant booba

and with that i think it's all i have to recommend for the moment.
i'll probably keep updating this thread since i still got quite a few games both old and new i'ld like to shill.
but hey feel free to talk about whatever game you like be it old, new, known or unknown.
no matter how much a game has been talked about there's always the possibility of someone here never having played it so don't be shy.
we all need more games to play now that 90% of the industry is pozzed

some of the games i have mentioned or will mention may have some shitty woke devs so as a safenet.
this is not an endorsment to buy these games, if you can get them either seccond hand or by any other way(you know what i mean) to be safe then do it.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
1687932715662.png

In the running for best 8 bit metroidvania, it sports great presentation that hooked me and gameplay +level design that kept me playing without guides or worries until the "Secret here, do your best" room. And then on through the entire game.

Very endearing, instead of abilities it is shapeshifting through different animal/monster forms to traverse the world until you are back to the way you started as, a full decked hero ready to rumble.

When looking up covers for this post I found out it's got quite a lot going on in its different versions: this is on the western Sega Master System, in JP it is Wonder Boy II and in a PC-Engine version ported by Hudson (with some sprites being 1:1 and others getting redesigned) it is fucking Adventure Island.

The modern port is apparently pretty good- but with the originals look and design plus the music tracks that make me want to play again to see that ending screen again, it better be.

Armored Core 3

Easily the best Armored Core Game IMO, Faster than AC1 and 2 but still the mechs feel weighty and like actual giant robots. It's hard, and alot to get used to, but an absolute banger of a Mech Game

51SY83D196L._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg

The Front Mission Games

If you enjoy Mechs, Tactical RPGS, and a classic Japanese convulted plot involving mecenaries, This is a good game series. Front Mission 1 has some shitty RNG but overall it's alot of fun, the mech building is super indepth and well thought out. Making the perfect wanzer team takes time and dedication. Amazing Mech TRPG.

Wild ARMS

Finally we have this classic PS1 JRPG. This spaghetti Western inspired JRPG is awesome, a rather simple yet fun story, stellar Intro, Soundtrack is full of bangers. So much fun absolutly recommend it for any new comers to PS1 JRPGs

That was my personal recommendations, enjoy these games.

Yes, Wonder Boy and Adventure Island are very similar games (to the point where IIRC one of them is kind of a "clone" of the other). Wonder Boy was released for SEGA systems (the Master System, to be more exact) while Adventure Island was for the NES.

First Wonder Boy and first Adventure Island games are pretty similar, they are "action/platformer" games that involve just going from left to right in a stage. Wonder Boy started adding RPG elements in the other installments, and I can't remember if Adventure Island did the same because I played mostly Wonder Boy.

Wonder Boy III is pretty kino, and the remake (called only Wonder boy: The Dragon's Trap) looks pretty good, but I haven't played it yet.

Edit: I was checking the Steam page for the remake now, and was a bit worried because the more recent reviews are "neutral", so I went to check.

Turns out the negative reviews are from negative IQ people complaining that the game is too faithful to the original.

If you liked Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap (And you SHOULD. For a game from the same year Metroid 1 released, it holds up INSANELY well, more than even MZM did. The remake is super faithful beneath all the art which for ANY other game would be a mistake.) you should try Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. One of the best metroidvanias I have ever played period. Beautiful, tons of great music, but also smart.

Also I always recommend Assault Spy, one of the best character action games out there period. Plus you have an annoying loli you can tactically deploy to draw enemy aggro.

If anyone likes 90s first person shooters and esoteric lore, one can't go wrong with the Marathon Trilogy. Criminally underrated, freeware, and on an open-source engine. Admittedly, the games are a bit rough around the edges. Marathon 1's level design is a mixed bag [Colony Ship For Sale Cheap is infamous for requiring precise alignment for the heights of platforms to use as steps to climb higher up], but starts off with an almost survival horror-esque atmosphere, before slowly shifting more into action game territory. Expect a tense game with cramped hallways and danger lurking around any corner. On that note, the fists are actually not useless in this game. One of the neat physics aspects of this game is that running punches do significantly more damage than punches when standing still. Jumping, though, is not done with a jump button. Your options are either to run across the gap and float your way there, or, if that's not an option, launch a grenade at your feet to hop up to a platform that's otherwise too high to reach. You can dual wield pistols, charge up a Fusion Pistol, and launch grenades from the underbarrel of your Assault Rifle in this game [and in the sequels].

Marathon 2: Durandal is the peak of the series, with level design devised in such a way where there's a quick, intuitive, and straightforward path through the levels, but there's also plenty to explore if you ever want to wander off the beaten path. The only issue with this game is that underwater combat in a few situations is a bit of a nuisance, where your only options are your fists or using the Fusion Pistol [which damages both you and enemies]. On the other hand, you get to dual wield shotguns and annihilate anything in your path.

Marathon Infinity has massive sprawling levels, a non-linear path through the game [depending on what you do and what exit terminal you take, it takes you different paths in the story. It's even possible to loop levels over and over again, if that's what you want], and even adds a new weapon that's very useful for combat, whether on land, in the vacuum of space, or underwater: the Flechette SMG. You can still dual-wield shotguns, too, if that's what you like. There's even some secret co-op levels, and a set of secret levels that takes the hardest maps from each entry in the series and brings them back with even tougher enemies, known as "vidmaster's challenge" levels.

After beating the main trilogy, there's a plethora of fan-made scenarios and total conversions to play through as well.

From time to time, though, people still play matches of online multiplayer in Marathon Infinity, so don't be afraid to check if anyone's hosting a match online.

E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy
32 player co-op for complete madness. Streum-on's unofficial Warhammer game, with homages to Ghost in the Shell and Doom sprinkled in. Has some pretty ridiculous weapons for a first-person shooter, such as an SMG with a full-auto setting and a fuller auto setting [as if it weren't already enough of a bullet-hose], a Bear Killer .444 caliber revolver powerful enough to down helicopters, a mini-nuke launcher, and more. Multiple endings, depending on what factions you decide to side with. The dialogue in this game is so utterly outlandish and ridiculous that it's become a set of memes in their own right. It's a lot of fun, but very eurojank and may be a bit too much of a grindfest for peoples' liking. Not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but I've enjoyed it.

Little Witch Nobeta

Cunny game Cunny game Cunny game Cunny game CUNNY GAME CUNNY GAME CUNNY GAME CUNNY GAME CUNNY GAME CUNNY GAME CUNNY GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME! Very good. Very Cunny. Based Devs.

God Eater Resurrection
Ridiculous esoteric anime plotline to justify fighting against giant animal monsters with superpowers, using ridiculously cool weapons. Has one of the most autistic and creative game mechanics ever conceived of by man, which will never appear in any other series of games than this one: the Bullet Editor. Create custom bullets, combining various different bullet types and tweaking their trajectories, designing them to look pretty and also be very devastating. Good times! There's also a neat Avatar Card system. You can customize loadouts to attach to your Avatar Cards, including custom bullets. Then, when you play co-op with friends, you can trade Avatar Cards. Avatar Cards will let your friends copy your custom bullets, and will even let your friends bring your character on certain missions with you if you're not available to play with them all the time.

You get an aragami loli daughter in this game. Her name is Shio. For a long while, she literally wears nothing more than the Fenrir flag as a dress, until she unlocks a pretty dress costume later in the game.
Unfortunately, there's a pretty bad bug in the PC port that's rather a nuisance: for some reason, with certain skyboxes, the transparency on certain particle effects doesn't work properly, and so bullets and enemy projectile attacks will be completely invisible against certain skyboxes. [They'll still be visible on textured level geometry, just not for the skybox.] This bug also effects God Eater 2: Rage Burst, but for significantly fewer skyboxes. It won't be an obvious issue until much later in the game. This can most easily be seen in the Bullet Testing Room, whenever you want to test out a bullet in your inventory from the menu.
Unique to this game is the Predator Styles system, which lets you customize and modify your devour attacks so as to be able to obtain different status buffs. You unlock these over the course of the game.

Will not play well with Proton and will hang for a while with excessively long loading. Disabling Esync and FSync will solve this issue, but will tank framerate stability, at least on Steam Deck. [Same issue with the sequel, God Eater 2: Rage Burst.]

God Eater 2: Rage Burst
More of the ridiculous esoteric anime plotline with more giant animal monsters to fight, and a new mechanic that lets you add modifiers to certain attacks to make 'em do more damage. The bullet editor mechanic is back. Unique to this game is another game mechanic, which unlocks once you're half-way through the game: BLOOD RAGE! This mechanic allows you to set certain challenges for yourself when attacking a large aragami opponent. And depending on the amount of challenges you successfully complete, you activate Blood Rage, and gain: 1) Temporary Invincibility for the duration. 2) A damage multiplier according to whatever percentage you managed to reach from completing challenges to even activate this mode in the first place.
No aragami loli daughter in this game, sadly. Though if I recall correctly, there's an option to bring a loli side-character into missions with you after beating the game. [It's been a while since I've played, so I could be wrong here.]

God Eater 3
More ridiculous esoteric anime plotline with even bigger and more dangerous giant animal monsters to fight. Now enemies are also able to use devour attacks on you to gain burst, just as you were able to do to them in previous games [and still can do in this game]. Special modifiers for melee attacks now only work when in burst mode, and custom bullets were massively nerfed [but are still around. Sadly, they're set to a separate non-replenishing ammo pool.] This game replaces Blood Rage with a synchronization mechanic where you and another character can sync with each-other and trade buffs while in combat. The synchronization mechanic also lets you gain Burst from firing burst bullets at team-mates to buff them.
The Blast Gun from the first and second game, which was ridiculously overpowered, is now gone, and has been replaced with a slower, continuous-firing laser weapon [though it's also able to store excess oracle energy into reserve tanks, though not as high capacity as the Blast Gun could.]

God Eater 3's PC port has been top notch in my experience, and I haven't run into any of the problems that affected the GE:R and GE2:RB PC ports.

This game focuses on trying to be the most balanced game in the series.

You do get an aragami loli daughter in this one, though. Her name is Phym, and she's very cute.

God Eater Resurrection
God Eater > Monster Hunter. Loved the GE games and had tons of fun. I was kinda disappointed with the lack of costumes in 3 though.
Doom 1, 2, 3 + Resurrection of Evil
I get 1 and 2, but 3? I thought it was an alright FPS, but for a Doom game it was meh.

Will add some if my own. Have to go through my games first though. Will probably result in a dump 10-30 easily.

alright part two of my incoherent autism ramblings
today we have
>2d platformers
>hack and slash
>metroidvanias
>stealth games

first we have
Gravity Circuit
lovely, beautiful, great FULL OF SOVL 2d platformer inspired by the megaman x games and jesus does this game acomplish the level of quality of the first x games and even surpasses it in some aspects.

in gravity circuit you play as kai, the gravity circuit a robot equiped with nothing but fists and a grapple hook, in this gamme you'll be jumping, hitting, grabbing and sliding across mutiple stages structured in an identical fashion to the megaman games.

and while kai might come a bit short in regards to range that doesn't mean he's weak, on the contrary with the help of upgrades and techniques you find that kai has a very diverse arsenal of choices to deal with all sorts of situations.

the game manages to land on that sweet spot of challenging but not bullshit in all of it's areas, level design, enemy placement and even bosses are all placed and programmed in a fair way however that also means there is no cheese in this game which well isn't really an issue for me.
it's a game that is just so complete and so well done that it's hard to believe it's real
and now here's a trailer and some music for your enjoyment

next we have
Ultra Age
as listed at the beginning of this posts ultra age is a hack and slash.
this ones a bit weird to talk about since the gameplay is really REALLY good but it migh also have some things that might be a deal breaker to some people, don't worry it has nothing to do with wokeness this time.

you see ultra age has a great gameplay, as any other hack and slash your main weapons are melee, in this case they are all different types of swords and while that on paper doesn't sound that entertaining the execution is great coming from such a small B rated studio, you have stuff like your classic great swords, katanas and the like to some more interesting things like gunblades and electrified swords HOWEVER these variants come with limitations, those being the fact that they break now don't worry while some might have some trauma from the newer zeldas the breaking mechanic is not that impactful and more often than not it works as an incentive to switch up your weapons and mix up your combos which speaking off. combos in this game are as fluid as water, you can seaminglesly switch your weapons mid combo and then continue it and to keep that flow going you also have a grapling hook(yes another game with a grappling hook) that either pulls light enemies towards you or pulls yourself towards them if they are heavy.
overall the gameplay is great.

now on the other had the whole game has this weird cheap aura to a lot of things, it looks TOO generic from character design to levels to enemies hell even the voice acting is at best a B grade as for the story it was something that i couldn't understand and didn't really impact my experience so i guess you can just ignore it and you're not losing from anything special.

but hey if you can get past those nitpicks like i did you have yourself a fun hack and slash

i couldn't download this trailer so instead you can go watch it on youtube :kekw:

okay now let's switch to metroidvanias

HOLLOW KNIGHT

okay i don't thik i have to talk much about this, in case you missed it hollow knight is a metroidvania about BUGS, you explore the fallen kingdom of hallownest, once a great city for bugs and other sorts of beings with exosqueletons now infested with the reanimated corpses of its former residents.

everything in this game is hand drawn and it looks beautiful and the music doesnt fall behind, while it may not always be the most high tempo balls to the walls ost it's still perfect at setting the atmosphere, every piece in hollowknight is carefully crafted to submerge you in the world of the game, heavy on harmony and a feast for the ears i've lost myself for hours upon hours in the maps of hollowknight because i keep losing my sense of time everytime i enter a new area.

but hold on that's not the only thing, while yes music and art are great in this game so does gameplay with some of the best bosses i have seen in a metroidvania i think hollwknight is a contender for one of the best if not the best metroidvania ever

now here's some music from the game

2019041600325100_c.jpg
2019041420364100_c.jpg
2019041600011900_c.jpg

okay lastly let's talk about some stealth games

MARK OF THE NINJA
MAN YOU KNOW NINJAS?
ninjas are great, we all love them be they the traditional ninja that stays in the shadows and only cares about its objective or the action ninja that decapitates its enemies in the flashiest way possible(god bless ryu hayabusa) we can all agree that they are cool as fuck.

mark of the ninja is a game more focused on the traditional ninja, in this game you will have to complete a series of 2d levels taking advantage of shadows, elevated spots and a plethora of tools to either avoid or take down your enemies in the most imaginative ways, do be careful if you blow your cover you're gonna get assraped and be sent back to your last checkpoint

i don't have much to talk about this game since i played it a long time ago but i still remember i had fun every seccond of if.

and i think that's it for today

Regarding Ninja Gaiden. Ninja Gaiden 1 Sigma is good enough to play and get a NG1 experience. There are differences that some folks won't like but it is close enough to NGB that if the convenience of the NGS1 PC port helps you, it is a perfectly fine way to play one of the genre's finest games.

NG2, do not play NGS2. Sigma 2 is NG2 but completely butchered. It's still kinda good because the core game is good but the balancing is shot to hell. Just a complete mess. You can play the NGS2:Black mod with Cheat Engine if you wish to try to salvage your mistaken Steam purchase/pirate of NGS2, but the proper way is to just get Xenia to emulate NG2. It does work decently well but you have to fiddle with it, of course. Nobody in human history is actually good at NG2 so yes you are supposed to feel like you're pinballing through the game, beaten and half-dead at every checkpoint. EVERYONE does that.

NG3 is a catastrophe. NG3:RE is almost a total apology for the giant catastrophe that was NG3. The combat is immensely fixed, but the bosses aren't. 3:RE's campaign is almost painful to play, but the immense amount of arcade challenge rooms you have access to turn the game into something decently fun, as all the dogshit scripted trash bosses don't show up (mostly) in those rooms so you can enjoy the combat against essentially a "best of" selection of enemies from the whole series. It's playable and if you are an action game connoisseur you can have fun, but it is definitely worse than the previous two. ESPECIALLY if you're a connoisseur as the extreme high level play is hurt by NG3:RE's rough edges, but if you're that good you probably don't need to be told what NG is worth playing.

Blood:

Bloodheader.jpg

Battle an army of sycophantic cultists, zombies, gargoyles, hellhounds, and an insatiable host of horrors in your quest to defeat the evil Tchernobog. Squirm through 42 loathesome levels filled with more atmosphere than a Lovecraftian mausoleum.

Blood is (in my opinion) the best build engine game. The Weapons all feel great and stay relevant throughout the game. You don't have a pistol that you only use when you don't have ammo for any other gun. Hell one of the first weapons (TNT) is a one of your best tools once you get the hang of it.
If you like FPS (especially DOOM), Retro games or just good games in general, then this game is for you!

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

SoulReaverheader.jpg

As Raziel, stalk the shadows of Nosgoth preying upon your former vampire brethren in your quest to destroy your creator- Kain. After being betrayed and executed by Kain, return to Nosgoth on an epic mission of revenge. A milestone in 3D adventure.

Soul Reaver has to be one of the best stories in a video game I've got to experience. That is despite it ending on a cliff hanger and them cutting a lot.
The atmosphere is something else, the gameplay is distinct, the world is fascinating and my god the voice acting is out of this world! Sadly the PC port is hard to run on modern systems. Your best bet is to emulate the Dreamcast version.

Sadly the game is taken down at the moment. Just go and get ReDream and a ROM

Alan Wake

AlanWakeheader.jpg

A Dark Presence stalks the small town of Bright Falls, pushing Alan Wake to the brink of sanity in his fight to unravel the mystery and save his love.

Alan Wake is essentially what you get when the devs want to make a good game. The story is fun and worth experiencing. The flashlight mechanic is pretty unique and actually makes the enemies feel tougher without just making them absolute sponges.
Also the graphics are pretty good. I still remember watching a Let's Play of this on my laptop in the kitchen and my mom walking in and asking what movie I was watching. Of course it's nothing special today, but the characters feel real if you get what I mean.

Sadly the game is taken down at the moment. Just go and get ReDream and a ROM

That's it for now. I have quite a few more, but I think 3 at a time is a good medium.

Bully:

Bully.jpg

Bully tells the story of mischievous 15-year-old Jimmy Hopkins as he goes through the hilarity and awkwardness of adolescence. Beat the jocks at dodge ball, play pranks on the preppies, save the nerds, kiss the girl and navigate the social hierarchy in the worst school around.

Bully is a great GTA clone, by the GTA makers themselves (Rockstar). Despite school being such a big part of peoples lives only very few seem to use this setting, which is a schame (I'm only talking western media. JP has been using it for a long while) since it's a far more identifiable setting than say COD.
Bully is a unique product of it's time and couldn't be replicated today. From messing around, doing tons of mini games, having a fun cast, etc. to a fun little story around power struggles, betrayals and other tomfoolery you won't be bored.
Bullys blood is GTA and it's flesh is Highschool.

Burnout Paradise

Burnout.jpg

Make action your middle name as you rule the open streets of Paradise City, in Burnout™ Paradise Remastered. Test the limits of skill and endurance as you push the boundaries of speed itself. Hurtle through hectic downtown avenues to wild mountain roads. Smash through traffic, wreck your opponents, and use the open city to find shortcuts. Leave your friends in the dust and define your route to victory – or crash out in spectacular and devastating effect.

Burnout Paradise is pure fun. If there is one racing game you play in your life make it this one! The game has a great OST full of licensed tracks, a great feel of speed, fun modes like the crash mode and a great world that feels great to just drive around.
Since this is a racing game, you won't get a story of epic proportions. This game doesn't need that though. Burnout Paradise is by many (me included) considered the peak of Burnout (some prefer 3 though).

Deponia: The Complete Journey

Deponia.jpg

Junk, junk and even more junk. Life on the trash-planet Deponia is anything but a walk in the park. No surprise that Rufus had enough of that and hatches one ludicrous plan after the other to escape this bleak place.

Deponia is the adventure of an egotistical maniac who has only one goal (actually two): To leave his home made from junk behind and reach the paradise known as Elysium.
Deponia is a charming game with great animations, a fun story and classic Point & Click gameplay. One could say it wore the Guybrushes boots for a few years. If you like Monkey Island, then you shouldn't miss this one.
Also on a side note: This is form Daedalic before the hostile takeover that lead to the godawful Gollum game.

Sadly the game is taken down at the moment. Just go and get ReDream and a ROM

Blood:

View attachment 15582

Alan Wake

A Dark Presence stalks the small town of Bright Falls, pushing Alan Wake to the brink of sanity in his fight to unravel the mystery and save his love.
