Fire Emblem Echoes Retranslation Patch

How do you use the DLC patches in citra? I've tried using Gamepatcher and couldn't get it to work, and I'm not sure where I should put them in the mod folders.
According to someone I DM in the 3DS Homebrew server they said that: "Citra allows dlc patching (same way as normal games, just put smth in the mods folder with the same title id as the dlc)", so I'm assuming it has something to do with the file directory, similar to Luma3DS (LayeredFS). I want to reiterate that I'm not an expert and that you should probably ask questions in their server if you are still stuck.

I managed to get the DLC patches to load in Citra by putting them in the base game romfs/m/@NOA_EN folder. Not sure why (The DLCs install into Extra Data when initially launched, so the game isn't looking for anything from the DLC ID folders?) but this (almost) works perfectly well.
  • Navigate into your fe15_retranslation_whichever_names\Region folder
  • Search by ".lz" to get all the files out of the DLC ID folders
  • Copy all of these to a new folder (not your romfs yet), because
  • The game does not interpret any of the "常駐" files correctly. The weapons and DLC characters will be named Unknown if these are kept (the characters otherwise work fine, but it is unsightly). Search for and delete these files.
  • Move the remaining files into the user\load\mods\BaseGameID\romfs\m\@NOA_EN folder
The issue doesn't seem to be a mod problem, either. I ripped a fresh one from the DLC .cia itself and got the same "Unknown" named character error. I've just accepted that he's Lando in the script and Randal in the UI.

Hope that works for anyone else running into problems.

Thanks for the assistance! At least we know how to get the DLC to work with Citra. I'm assuming this does not work for console, right?

I just finish testing it with console, and as expected, it doesn't work. Oh well. At least the DLC works at Citra. Honestly, I don't know why DLC moding is still this convoluted in 3DS consoles despite over a decade of 3DS Hacking.

Thank you for finding this out. I was trying to troubleshoot the DLC problem myself but I just couldn't wrap my head around it. I am hoping to create a rom patcher for this mod in the future like TeamIF did for their project, but I lack the programming skills to do so. Perhaps I could could figure out how to repack the .app files in the future and release a tutorial for that?

Finding a way to repack .app files would certainly help a great deal. Thank you so much for looking into the situation! I really love this mod and I want the full experience to be more accessible for others, so I'm glad to see that you're still working on it.

Just to clarify, you can still play the base game with the mod working properly. I've also heard that if you are playing with the Citra emulator, the DLC should work fine, but I prefer to play with console anyway. If you are also playing with console and want to play the DLC maps in your playthrough of the game, then I'm actually working on a Google Doc that copy paste the retranslated dialogue from the script dump in a readable format. It's still being work on, with only three of the Liberation DLC Maps completed, but I can share it to you now if you plan on playing those maps before the end of Act 1.
oh sorry, it was my fault, i manage to play the game just fine in citra, thank you for your hard work!!!

Hello. I've been playing the game with this patch and enjoying it a lot.
I have an issue though, some conversations are instantly skipped/not played at all. I'm not entirely sure if it's this mod's fault though. Some examples are the memory fragment "what lies beyond ambition" and "unlikely encounter", and the A support between Silque and Efi. Those immediately kick me back to the previous screen when I try to reread them with mila's wheel from the menu. I'm playing on Citra and both EU and NA roms have that problem.
It's not a huge deal I guess but it's still bothersome because I can't just look it up on a wiki since the script over there is the trannyslated one instead of this one.
If anyone knows what it could be I'd love an answer, but whatever the case, thank you so much for this patch! I accidentally played the prologue with the official script because I didn't install this patch correctly and I don't think the script matched the jp speech even one time, that's when I knew I had to double check haha.
Cheers.

If you find an error/typo, please report it. There are also some scenes that may skip instead of playing. If anyone knows the cause of this error, please let me know.

UPDATE 2023-12-30: The patch is now complete!

Are you tired of reading 8-4's purple prose? Do you wish that Mae wasn't cracking unfunny jokes every other line? Do you want Clair to not sound unpleasant?

Then this patch is for you! Say goodbye to crap like "BUT DRAGONS!" and hello to tolerable dialogue!

This patch is a retranslation of Fire Emblem Echoes, intended on bringing a more accurate interpretation of the original Japanese script. This mod only works with North American and European copies. Make sure you also have the undub patch, otherwise the script won't flow.

I am aware that pretty much no one on this forum is a fan of 8-4. Their interpretations of some scenes were... interesting, I have to say. Fire Emblem Echoes is a great game, so I think it deserves a better translation.

This path covers the main story, the post game, all adventure mode dialogue, all support conversations, all base conversations, and all the memory prisms. I've also covered most of the character names, location names, item names, spell names, skill names, class names, and sidequest dialogue.

There are two versions of this patch:

One that uses the original Japanese names for EVERYTHING(i.e. "Nosferatu" to "Resire" and "Armor Knight" to "Armor") and one that uses localized names for everything except characters, locations, and spells, skills and classes that are unique to Gaiden/Echoes(i.e. "Expel" to "Dear").

There is also a dump of the retranslated script in labeled files with a complete chapter list bundled with the patch that may be used for wikis and such.

If you find an error/typo, please report it. There are also some scenes that may skip instead of playing. If anyone knows the cause of this error, please let me know.

These are scenes that I have found to have issues on LayeredFS:
The after battle cutscene in Ram Forest
Amidst The Flames(Memory Prism)
Unlikely Encounter(Memory Prism)
Alm and Clair's A support
Celica and Conrad's A support

Have fun!
Where would I go to report typos?

I'm doing a project where I compare the original japanese to this mod and it's official localization (You're passing with flying colors btw) and I've found 2 so far in the opening and prologue.

Version 1.4 Update:

Hi everyone, it's been a while. Unfortunately, I do not have nearly as much time to work on the project as I used to nowadays. Anyone who wishes to create their own version of this patch and post it is more than welcome to. I am still hoping to deliver a complete DLC solution in the future, but for now I still wanted to release the improved script. Thank you to everyone who has supported this project!

Changelog:
  • Parts of the script have undergone a complete overhaul in order to sound more natural and better translate the flavor of the original Japanese. I have also double-checked for errors and inconsistencies. For example, "Sacred Mark" has been fixed to "Stigmata".
  • The title has been fixed to "Fire Emblem Echoes: Another Hero-King".
  • There is now a dump of the original Japanese script included with the patch.

This was brought up in the Fates uncensored thread, but I had previously worked on rebuilding DLC for Fire Emblem Fates and wrote a guide for cris1010 on rebuilding it for Fates. The guide should also apply to any other DLC for any other game that stores DLC in NCCH containers. The only changes you need to make to make it compatible with your mod is the DLC.rsf (you need to change the product code and uniqueID, you can also change the title, but it doesn't matter for compatibility) and the NCCH id's during rebuilding (DLC.00XX.000000YY:0x00XX:0x000000YY). I remember the Fire Emblem game DLCs being weird where it includes a bunch of junk/reserve data and you need to include those in your rebuild for the DLC to install properly on emulators. When I made my cmd command for the final rebuild, I was so lazy, I gave ChatGPT the list of the NCCH containers and told it to write out the -i DLC.00XX.000000YY:0x00XX:0x000000YY etc for me. akko_grin

DLC rebuild guide.
