Discussion Getting into the fate series

I have to confess that, despite being one of the most well-known franchises in the anime and manga (and vn) mediums I, personally have very little experience with the fate series besides the basic premise of historical figures in anime girl/boy form

So I was wondering if I wanted to get into it where should I start?

Most fans agree that you should start with the original universe featuring Shirou, Saber, Rin and Sakura. The real question is between Fate/Zero and the original story.

If you're familiar with visual novels, the best place to start is Fate/stay night, where it all begins. Look up "Realta Nua" and follow the setup guide carefully if you want to play it in English (including the sex scenes). The game is fully fan-translated, so there's no censorship.

If you can't be bothered for whatever reason, then just watch Fate/Zero. Most people don't recommend the 2006 adaptation of F/SN because it makes a lot of mistakes and tries to blend spoilers from all three routes into Saber's. After Zero comes Unlimited Blade Works (Rin's route) and finally the Heaven's Feel movie trilogy (Sakura), all done by ufotable. Some fans disagree with using Zero as a jumping-off point because, since it's a prequel, it basically spoils every plot twist found in the original F/SN story. The solution to that problem is to read the VN.

Once all is said and done, you can pretty much branch off to anything. I recommend Carnival Phantasm after Heaven's Feel because it's a really good comedy spin-off. If you're based, check out Prisma Illya for magical girl lolis. Tourists get filtered by that show.

Hope this helps!

Play the VN (all three routes) first, and then watch Fate/Zero. Do not watch Zero first as it contains massive spoilers for the VN.

You can ignore pretty much everything after that (except Prisma Illya), especially anything related to the gacha cancer that killed the series.

Gigguk honestly ruined fate for alot of newbies because of how he made it sound so much more complicated than it is, I will give you the order I watched it in (I believe this to be the best order personally) Keep in mind this is MY order, I do not take the VN's into account as I myself have not even played them. If you want to consume the VN's to then ignore this reply.

Keep in mind alot of fate stuff is "not canon" in the sense that their is PLENTY of side stuff to consume, for example fate/stay night compared to fate/stay night UBW compared to fate/stay night heavens feel. Depending on who you ask will depend on what you are told but the general consensus is that fate/stay night is optional if you only care about the canon "true" stuff. However I will list my watch order ignoring this fact.

The order I consumed fate and what I believe to be the ideal order for a NON VN consumer:

Studio Deen - Fate/stay night (optional)

Ufotable - Fate/Zero (tied to stay/night as a prequel set 10 years prior)

Ufotable - Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works

Ufotable - Fate/stay night Heavens Feel (Movie Trilogy)

A-1 Pictures - Fate/Apocrypha (You can watch this at any point, it is a good entry point into the fate series in my opinion as it stands on it's own two legs also I believe it to be one of the best Fate animations)

SHAFT - Fate/Extra Last Encore (I watched this and still have no clue where it is placed because I never researched it, pretty entertaining though and can be watched on it's own seperate from stay/night)

Lay-duce - Fate/Grand Order First Order (First animation of the Fate/Grand Order series, set far in the future of everything else with time travel shit, so I would watch GO stuff AFTER all the stay night stuff personally. This animation is also movie length and is 1 episode)

Clover Works - Fate/Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front - Babylonia

Signal M.D - Fate/Grand Order: Divine Realm of the Round Table - Camelot Wandering; Agateram (Movie)

Production I.G - Fate/Grand Order: Divine Realm of the Round Table - Camelot Paladin; Agateram (Movie)

Clover Works - Fate/Grand Order: Final Singularity - Grand Temple of Time: Solomon (Movie)

The stuff listed below can be watched at any point really in my opinion:

SILVER LINK - Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya (all seasons - look up the order, I cannot be fuckin bothered to type out the long ass names)

A-1 Pictures - Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- (Pilot for the upcoming fate/strange fake anime, very good and I highly rec)

Then you have the spinoffs like fate carnival and the emiya cooking show and random bits of fate stuff like fate/prototype. You will need to look into those if you want to watch them, I cannot justify the effort it would take to gather them all up for you.

This is not an exhaustive list of all fate productions however this is the stuff I deem the most relevant if you want to get into fate/ via the anime side.

Obviously everybody has their own idea on what the best watch order is, same with shit like Star Wars or Magical Index, all I can do is answer the question to the best of my ability. I hope this list helps.

Best of luck and welcome to the fate/fandom, probably one of the better ones especially considering the shit show that is One Piece and MHA.

(Sorry for inactivity, Have been drafted for my "required military service" so have no time to do anything, on leave this weekend to see family but will not be around often, shitty country making me do this shit, should have pulled the disabled card)

Thanks a lot for the replies a good of useful info.

I did notice that no one mentioned any manga or novels. Does the fate series not have any?

Im tempted to start with the vn. Is that something I can buy somewhere? Or should I just try to find other means of getting it?

Manga does exist for the series but my reasoning for not mentioning the VN or any motionless productions is because Ufotable/a-1/deen/SHAFT and all the other studios do an amazing job of animating the series.

There are two games I would suggest if you are interest, fate/extella and fate/extella link, they are musou games so if that is your kind of game then go for it as they are pretty well made, we also have fate/samurai remnant coming out this year which is another fate game I have high hopes for.

Generally the anime adaptations for fate are in a league of their own. Hence the "unlimited budget works" meme for Ufotable (despite the fact that time and skilled animators is what makes it so good, not directly the budget)

Everything Ufotable did just looks incredible. If you thought Kimetsu No Yaiba had amazing animation then Fate will blow you away. The best part? Fate actually has a good story that is interesting, unlike Kimetsu No Yaiba, so the flawless animation is topped off with a heavy spoonful of engaging story and character building.

To clarify though, the rest of the adaptations also look amazing, (especially fate/extra by studio SHAFT)

Fate/Zero anime is based on a novel and Prisma Illya anime is based on a manga.

Absolutely recommended to play the VN first if you can. The best thing about it is that if you finish that first, you can basically move on to anything else afterwards. Don't do anything stupid like watching Fate/Zero first, that's a prequel for a reason.

After the VN i would rec watching Zero -> UBW -> Heavens Feel. By this point you should know enough to decide what you want next. Prisma Ilya is good if you want some comedy.

Fate Grand Order (FGO) the mobile game is a hard sell. It's got the best story in mobile games period. But the gameplay is crap and starting 8 years in is probably not a fun experience. Also not recommended if you're a gambling addict lol

i actually watched the studio deen adaptation of fate stay night

apparently it sucked, but the soul of it still remained, so i was fine with it, and also only up from there i suppose

then i watched the unlimited blade works movie, which was also done by studio deen, which apparently sucks as well, but i was fine with it lol

then i watched fate/zero, which was some amazing stuff

and then prisma illya afterwards, which had a wonderful story, and was cute and funny

i also watched the fate/grand order movie and mesopotamia arc anime, which wasn't bad (never played the game nor delved too deep into that universe)

honestly, i'd just say consume it however you want, generally best to do the original fate/stay night routes first, then the other contents are just spin-offs which are based off of how good the og was
