Edna & Harvey: The Breakout:

Edna1.jpg

Accompany young Edna and her talking stuffed bunny Harvey on a whacky attempt to escape from her padded cell. Experience a bizarre journey all across the insane asylum and far beyond its brick

Edna & Harvey just like Deponia is a Point & Click adventure mirroring the golden age made by Daedalic. The setting is absolutely perfect and makes the weirder and more obfuscated puzzles actually make sense in the context of the location. You are in an insane asylum! Wacky characters, tons of dialogue and more.
This game might fit into the underrated / lesser known thread, but especially in the German speaking it is a well known game.

Prey

Prey.jpeg

Prey tells the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere. Along with his people, he is abducted to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, where he sets out to save himself, his girlfriend, and eventually his planet.

Prey (not to be confused with Prey 2017) is a fantastic FPS from the era when not every FPS had to be military themed, have multiplayer and have only "realistic" weapons. The setting was fantastic and compared to a lot of modern day "muh representation" the game actually made "Indians" an integral part of the story. I can't say much other than play it if you can.
Sadly the game is not as widely available (one reason being, that at the beginning the song "Don't Fear the Reaper" from Blue Öyster Cult (great song btw.) is playing).
Also as already mentioned there is a game called Prey (2017) which has nothing to do with this one. There was a Prey 2 in the works which was meant to be some kind of "Space Bounty Hunter" type of game (it kind of makes sense from the story), but that was shelved and because no company was like "You can't use the name Prey!" it will probably never happen

  • PC: You have to pirate it or get your hands on a CD key which can be used by Steam.
  • XBOX

This time only two games. It's too hot for me to write another.

Yeah. Blood is a masterclass in sound design. I love me an OST like doom, but Blood is pure atmosphere!

You absolutely should! It does show it's age, but I never heard anybody who actually played it talk bad about it.
Blood is a masterclass in level design too. There's more stinkers as the game goes on but it's some amazing stuff from guys who would go on to be legends in game design. Plus, played on Hard or above, the cultists were some ARMA tier bullshit.

Just finished Twilight Syndrome Tansaku-hen and its sequel Twilight Syndrome Kyuumei-hen, recommend both of those for anyone looking for a good atmospheric horror game with very interesting narrative themes (spirituality, urbanization, the impacts of war, japanese culture and their beliefs) and some tidbits of slice of life.

They're only available in Japanese but they're definitely worth it if you know the language and they aren't that hard if you're still learning, just gotta know your supernatural vocabulary and some 1980s references which you can mostly ignore unless you wanna fall into weird rabbit holes about things like how a manga series ended up causing some sort of suicide game in the country.

[Copied straight from the Pleroma and edited for the forums. Some games may have already been mentioned by other users. May further edit later.]
These are my absolute favorite games that I either have extremely fond memories/playtime of, or frequently revisit out of sheer love for. In no particular order:
  • Hollow Knight | An absolutely certified classic, looking to find time for Blasphemous 1 & 2 at some point. I introduced Hollow Knight to my friends and absolutely no regrets. Tight controls, deep worldbuilding, and fun characters. Great music, too (Sisters of Battle and N Grimm).
  • Pizza Tower | Another short and sweet game where the fans took power into their own hands to make a game Nintendo refused to. Warioland inspired. Lots of fun, extremely over-the-top, and downright satisfying to play. Replayability comes in the form of mastery, which is great if you're a gamer that likes to get the highest ranking on levels instead of just completing and moving on.
  • NieR Automata | A very fulfilling story action game. Existentialism abound. Also gave us 2B.
  • Crosscode | One of the best indie action RPGs on the market. Tight controls, a game designed around challenge, and a really interesting story with fun characters. Lots of side content as well.
  • Titanfall 2 | A production of a no-longer existent Respawn Entertainment. Play it for the story alone, but I often come back to the multiplayer just to have fun via the community Northstar client.
  • Sekiro | Not much to say here, you probably already know. This is a AAA title but I think it's my favorite FromSoft game. I was never a huge fan of the Souls formula, so I can't even say I "liked" Elden Ring. I don't own a PS so I haven't played Bloodborne and they won't port it, so... Sekiro is my recommendation.
  • Megaman Zero | Play all of these games. HARD GUARANTEE BANGERS. It "continues" with the ZX series but honestly I haven't played them yet.
  • Azure Striker Gunvolt | Megaman inspired game for the DS, but plays very differently. Great music and tight controls. Very anime, but that's not a bad thing.
  • Mario RPGs, except for Paper Mario 4-6 | There is *so* much good stuff here man. This includes Super Mario RPG, the Mario & Luigi games, and the Paper Mario games. Explore to your heart's content but once you get to Paper Mario entries starting with Sticker Star, you can stop. Truly, a golden era in Nintendo's history. Includes GBA, DS, and Wii games.
  • Code Vein | Bloodborne but with anime waifus, lololol. DLC kinda sucks but the vanilla game is great.
  • Everhood | A great spin on the cultural phenomenon Undertale. While it may look like pixel crap at first, I can promise that there is an INSANE rhythm game underneath. Truly a "don't judge a book by it's cover" moment. Everhood > Undertale. It's hard though, so take breaks!
  • DOOM 2016 | I have not played Eternal but I can say that the 2016 successor was tons of fun. Go fast, shoot demons, cover the screen in gore. Testosterone levels go up, brain chemicals happy.
  • Castle Crashers | A genuine classic reminiscient of the Newgrounds era. Extreme amounts of replayability.
  • Enter the Gungeon | One of my favorite roguelites of all time. Satisfying gunplay and really fun bosses.
  • Risk of Rain 1 & 2 | On the topic of roguelites, there is also the Risk of Rain (ROR) games. Both are different, but the premises are the same. If you like insane power scaling and satisfying gameplay, these are for you. Learning curve is high, though. Risk of Rain Returns is on the horizon, too.
Here are some other games I really like, some recently played others dug up from memory because they are my personal favorites, but you'll have to see if they suit you.
  • Megaman X Series | What more can I say? I used to beat this game in between classes when I was at university. In particular, the first Megaman X I often replay via ZNES emu, but there are also the other games. I like X8 as well.
  • Megaman Battle Network Series | Start with 1 and work your way up. A very interesting kind of game.
  • One Step From Eden | On the topic of MMBN, this is an MMBN inspired indie game that is kind of like a roguelite and progresses similarly to Slay the Spire. Your goal is to defeat the final boss.
  • Megaman Battle Network Transmission via Dolphin | Megaman Battle Network that was reimagined for classic Megaman style. Honestly, not all that bad! It carries some of the issues from the first MMBN game where the buster is a pathetic peashooter to begin with, but upgrades can make it your primary weapon. Lots of fun, great music, great adaptation of the Battle Network universe into the classic sidescroller.
  • I-Ninja via Dolphin | A Gamecube action platformer that was a really obscure game. It has its flaws but there is a ton of replayability, which comes in the form of modifiers for each level. It is designed similar to Mario where each "world" has a few levels and then a final boss, but each final boss is unique and designed around the theme of that world. Also you're a ninja with a big head, lol.
  • Sins of a Solar Empire, Rebellion + Mods | A classic case of "should we" rather than "can we," this is a really old 4X sci-fi RTS that I always find myself playing a game of here and there, though rarely since a single game can be 3-4 hours when I crank it up to fulfill my space empire fantasy. You can find it online since it is a very old game.
  • Gravity Circuit | A recent game I played that I really enjoyed. A short but sweet Megaman inspired game in a similar robot-occupied setting. Great music, tight gameplay.
  • Monster Hunter (GU & World) | Whether you like it is going to be up to you, but I find myself booting up World a lot.

Honestly I just want another warioland

I feel like they just forgot of that franchise once the warioware games release
I played Wario Land Shake It not too long ago and it was pretty good. I wouldn't even mind a simple Wario Land Collection or smth.
But seeing how nintendo played with Yoshi I would love to see a new one in a special style like Claymation, Paper, etc.

BLASTER MASTER ZERO

Made it a couple of areas in during a whimsical try, very nice presentation. Only gave a comparable try to the original NES game but one change that sends ripples through your gameplay:
-Power up cycling
NES Sunsoft is a bit infamous for their sine wave weapon patterns (Fester's Quest that powerup became a penalty since it didn't penetrate walls) but being able to cycle and certain types shooting across walls makes it a much better feeling to power up your weapon (max level was also great in the original as well though).

Gotta dedicate it what it's due to say if the recharging powerup to ignore powerdown when being hit trivializes the game too much compared to the tense attrition when you only have like three weapons and no powerup.

On the particular 2D spectrum is the character design as well: been on guard regarding character design and writing in animu, already want to go back to BMZ with its straightforward cast. But TNT: Evilution has taken my attention as a matter of pride and history.

Risen:

Risen.jpg

Delve into a gritty, raw and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting or become a powerful mage.

Risen is one of these RPGs that you get really into or you just don't get it. The game is showing it's age, but if you can look beyond it, it will be a great experience.
One thing the game does really well, is limiting the scope of the world. The entire game plays on an island and thus never tries to be some grand epic with tons of fluff and thus has a charming world that feels alive. The only part, that really sucks is how they tried to make it into a series, but never really were able to capture the charm of the first game.
It was alos recently ported to Switch (for whatever reason).
