Discussion The Future for Anime Subbing

What are your guys thought on anime subbing in the future. Do you believe that anime subbing will be dominated by streaming services once funimation acquires Crunchyroll ( if they are able to acquire crunchyroll) and that fansubbing will die as an artform with only a few fansub groups left. Or do you believe that fansubbing will comeback and kill streaming services as a whole in the western world.

well thats a bit optimistic :p, but I think fansubs won't be going anywhere. Normalfags will normalfag, but I still think most of the hardcore animu audience torrent and rely on fansubs.
I have a feeling once (please god let them do this) the anime studios make their own streaming services and cut out the middlemen fansubs will drop off as people go to support the studios directly. Assuming any of that happens I hope they won't be anywhere near as tolerant of the bullshit translations that western companies allow.

Alternatively anime will die out of the mainstream, normalfags go back to doing their own thing, crunchyroll goes bankrupt (I will dance on their grave), and fansubs return to prominence.

I don't anticipate either extreme. There's always going to be a need for fansubbing as long as any of the following conditions exist:

• Official dubs are deemed inferior or insert dialogue, thoughts, and concepts that were not intended by the original author (e.g. political statements, character assassination, etc.)
• Anime continues to be released on a wide variety of streaming services, which forces the average consumer to pick and choose
• Casual viewers decide it's worthwhile paying for a streaming service rather than donning their eyepatches

And I don't see a world where one of these doesn't hold. You'd have to be extremely optimistic that licensors get their shit together and that the community as a whole retreats entirely from piracy.

Oh yeah that'd never happen. There'll always be region restrictions and tight wallets. Pirating isn't going anywhere, so we might as well improve it and create decent translations.

I would not be adverse to this idea. To be completely honest, one of the reasons I am much more interested in learning and improving my knowledge of Japanese is not only to enjoy the material in its original form but also help facilitate better, higher-quality, and influence-free translations for fans. Be the change you want to see and whatnot.

Well I'm thinking more like fansubbing comes back where most seasonal anime are fansubed. Also, if anime studios do ever cut out the middle man and directly translate there own work, they can include karaoke openings and endings just like back then. But honestly, I genuinely hope that your last sentence happens and that we return to the days of fansubs.

Honestly, If normies do end up fucking off and anime returns to a niche culture along with fansubbing coming back, The streaming service era of anime will honestly feel like a fever dream. Like all these stupid topic that started to come out of nowhere due to anime becoming mainstream will feel like some alternate timeline shit that happened or a nightmare that was real for sometime.

It'll be weird, but hopefully we can look back on it like that.
A lot of loli "discussion" would completely drop off the radar as well, considering its only really known cause of "anitwitter" and them clashing with the traditional anime fanbase, and vtubers would return to being a JP thing.

Anyway back to the topic, if i've learned anything from @Hellhammer its that even fansubbing groups are starting to get iffy with their translations, and the only way to really get quality content is to do it yourself.
So if we get enough Jap speakers together, I'd be down to talk about setting up a translation group for the site.

It's interesting to think, if anime wasn't mainstream I doubt these sites would even exist cause Shizu wouldn't be bitching about these people on twitter, I wouldn't have been irritated to the point of spending money on all this stuff, and i'd never met him and gotten the push to start any of the sites.

my ears were burning before, I guess I know why but joke aside.
I would be down for it if we get enough people got involved who were committed enough to do it and stick with it. because it's going to be a passion project, and for the most part it is going to be a thankless job, and most likely never going to make money off it.
but you get the far greater prize even greater than pissing off official translators and localizers, the satisfaction that comes from learning a new skill.
that you use outside of anime, manga and etc.

I think it would better to start out with manga or doujin.
because A we can figure out skill levels and what people are good at, because some people are better at reading Japanese than speaking it and vice versa.
B there also organization and logistics to consider as well as what are we naming the group.
then C teamwork and will everyone get along with one another, because if we can't get along then no work will get done and it will be for not.
and I say this as a guy who has experience with leadership roles and working in team-based projects, like podcasts for exmple.

I have to say that I'm tired of Crunchy/Funi subs because they always put something that doesn't make sense or they are translating it in a way that change the meaning of the dialogue.
Also I've read this in English publications of manga, where they are putting political themes on a fucking romantic comedy (Viz media version of Kaguya-sama). Also I've bought the Spanish version (Ivrea) which they are publishing it and I need to check if they put something weird in there.

I think and I hope fansubbing will be alive and well after seeing that legal ways are destroying those stories, because they are the only way to read/watch those stories if we don't know Japanese language.

I also started the long path of actually learning Japanese. I want to enjoy the content as it was originally intended and also to catch bullshit translations. Whenever I read "Funimation" I remember that dumb subbing in Maid Dragon's Luka about the "patriarchy" and whatnot.

Yep, the Dragon Maid disaster was the first act of malicious localization that affected me directly, particularly since I have a such an appreciation for that series. Anyone familiar with coolkyoushinnja would know this is not dialogue he would endorse. It's insulting to him as the creator, us as the fans, and the series as a whole. Literally nobody wins except cancerous interest groups that are hardly even involved in the media (and for good reason!)

Funimation has lost any and all of my support since then, but it's a damn shame they have such a strong hold on the localization market. I guess this sort of thing is ultimately why we have the eyepatches, eh?

it's shit like that why I stopped watching dubs for the most part, because while English dubs can be a mixed bag.
there is a massive issue when you have a bunch of bad actors pushing an agenda, and they cry and complain about oh those evil pirates who steal.
never asking why they do it in the first place.
the reason, why are sailing the seven seas, is that these official channels provide a less quality product compared to what some pirate sites offer, and B it's their behaviour and the shit these people do. so it's not shocking that people have turned to piracy because laws of the free market say. " if I don't like your product I am just going to go get it somewhere else.
the only way to combat these people is just don't give them any money. a parasite can't survive without a host.

I dont know about if Ivrea its on other countries aside Argentina and Spain, since in my country the only two editorials that I know its Panini and Kamite (never bought one of the last one, they are fucking expensive).


Going again to Ivrea... the ARG side of Ivrea its a fucking joke to the most the spanish side, thats all. A lot of the time they use a lot of regional phrases in their translations. Some say that its justified because the jp also has their own "colloquialisms" so its good to have those on spanish, more if they are only for one region, like Ivrea Arg. A thread on r/arg talked about it some years ago. Some comments are really stupid lol "Or you preffer some shitty mexican translation because their spanish its the more neutral?", but my favorite comment in that thread its the dude saying "What a shit with Ivrea, gonna spend more than 150$ARG to read japanese dudes talking like they are from Buenos Aires"

I dont really know how are going the things now, from what i readed in some places, they toned down a bit with the colloquialisms, but I dont really know.
