Localisation The Shitty Localizers List

Localised content

What makes you less of a sperg when you go out there and bully people who have probably been your brethren in the past but are now tainted in your eyes by the bad wolf localization company? If you knew how many localizers that you hate now , who were the fansubbers you might have admired under their pseudonyms in the past. Quite a lot actually.

I honestly never admired fansubbers back in the day. I was there during 00's and early 10's and vividly remember the petty drama and pissing contests between groups over who was the fastest and who had the fanciest Adobe after effects in the OP/ED karaoke.

Speaking of ex fantranslators. Just about every VN fan i know hates Sekai Project with a burning passion. So the feeling is mutual there.

That's because he's on the lower end of things. Most likely, those other translators don't see him on the same level they are. (I was right, just saw his new post)

You're going to be disappointed a bit, first half was more him excusing their behaviour, and now it slowed because it's at a stalemate.
But basically all so-called new information from this translator is old news, at least it was for me anyway.
same here, some of this information I knew about and some of it I had vague inklings on it.

I'm going to sign out here now because I wanna play a VN and I'm surprised that going here led to more chill and productive talk than what I usually have with the "Japanese only players" crowd.

all goods, thank you for your time. this has been a good talk and it's been nice to have you here. hope you will stick around and see what else we have to offer

have a good rest of your day

There are many factors that go into renaming characters - not entirely always the fault of the localizers themselves. Sometimes companies have weird weird expectations how they want their character names to be rendered - the last example I remember is probably Rewrite where a character called Shizuru was rendered as "Sizuru" because that is the Japanese kunreishiki 訓令式 way of spelling that name. I personally hate renaming characters because the Japanese love using name kanji and readings as particular wordplay that sometimes even has an impact on the story itself - really tough stuff when you have to face that. Different translation schools also have different opinions about this so it is an individual decision whether names are changed or not. Sometimes it is done to give characters something "iconic" because they think a common English name might be more memorable (and easier to pronounce) than for example "Hiromi". This is simply because Americans/English speakers tend to want to have their text read as familiar as possible. There is even the idea that keeping Japanese names (and their accompagning honorifics) is an expression of orientalism because people find JP names so cool and fancy!

Either way, I'm against localizing names since the advent of Detective Conan (or Case Closed for the anglos) where they changed every character and made it impossible for me to familiarize myself with that version. The German version for that anime for example kept all the names intact and no one ever complained.

I can feel your anger and respect you want to be respectful, but I repeat again that I just talk here as an individual and not on behalf of specific brand of localizers who probably would have recurring nightmares if I were to represent them. In a way I kinda hope that me showing up here encourages other localizers (and aspiring ones) to do so too so a discourse can be woven.

Also I got nothing to do, I finished QCing our newest German TL for a switch game and just sit here chilling to some Doujin-Works from DLSite and type in a forum about my personal view of the scene I aspire to be a part of - without the condescending part.

I guess you didn't get it because you're German but the renaming of Esty Erheart to Esty Dee had nothing to do with any of that.
Hell, most the characters in Atelier games actually have Germanish names that are often written in Katakana so its literally a case of simply transliterating the name.
NIS America renamed Esty Erheart for the sake of a dumb joke and nothing else. Esty Dee = S.T.D. = Sexually Transmitted Disease. Get it? haha...ha...

If arguing "localizer bad" does not do anything, then the best we can do is continue to show examples of what we're talking about, and just see what happens.
There are a lot of comparison screenshots on the forum, so hopefully more people can see and decide for themselves if they want to play/buy games with that type of "translation". If the majority decide that rewriting/censoring the text, adding memes and woke lines is okay, then that's just how it is.
For me personally, I do not trust any game localization, so I would not buy or even pirate them.

Welp, I missed the whole thing.

Why do I miss sophisticated talks all the time? I was just playing Tarkov for the first time. :shake:

It's good to see that you guys had a nice dialogue. I believe that there's a whole lot of lack of professionalism from a lot of these localizers regardless fo their "biases", because "bias" or not, there are rules to translations and memes, current events and fotm jokes are just always going to be dated, so that's why we should always strive to have the original TRANSLATED and not LOCALIZED unless it's necessary (and from all of these cases we've brought up, I have yet to find a single "necessary" case), because no matter what, players will always notice this cultural dissonance.

I believe that most of these games don't even have a "global audience", of course, there will always be the "new guy to anime", but I have this doubt they're a majority and that, in general, they wouldn't want not to learn about a different culture. Like with the current trends, anime is very popular. Right now it's ridiculous to think people would not notice these titles aren't made in the west and that they might have something they'll "learn" during the game.

Also, this mentality that "most" don't have any problem with current affairs is very fucking weird, to be fair.
Why would you expect them to be when they don't know? Varish.Angout is obscure, OAG was obscure and vilified, GG was vilified (and wasn't really obscure), nobody knows about these changes.
I'm sure we're unaware of many horrible things around the world and we live our life in ignorance, but that doesn't mean they're suddenly OK just because nobody is protesting them.
It's obvious that if I secretly put poison into a family member's food over a long period of time and he dies, he would never suspect me, I did it covertly, I'm a person he or she trusts (like most would trust translators/localizers/publishers not to fuck their product up, unlike us that have some knowledge of their misdeeds) but it's still a horrible deed what I did even if I'm not jailed for it because there's no suspicion of a criminal act anyway.

And being "nice" to "localizers" never worked. Actually, being nice to people that wouldn't want to waste more time and/or have to show integrity over their already worked hours is stupid in the first place. Let's be clear, I'm one of the people that would defend themselves when I knew I did something wrong if I can attenuate the consequences, because "work" simply isn't worth it most of the times, and we're talking "contractor" work here as well with translators.
Having to go back on your work and dealing with drama is just so fucking annoying anyway, so that's why you should ALWAYS raise a stink, because people are generally unapologetic and would rather twist the situation to have an easy time.

Some examples here are even worse than just "twisting the situation to have an easy time", some of them are outright people hating on their work and doing everything in their power to undermine it either for vendettas ("hurr durr, I hate the writing, why is my time wasted") or because they think they can do better ("hurr durr, why high school characters, I'll just change them to university lol because I like it more!").

So I'd say that it's false to think this is "isolated to just some localizers", because we've basically had problems with most mainstream Japanese releases in the west until now. :kekw:

Meru (merumeruchann)

Since meru owns a Localization company and she uses social media a lot to display her victim complex, lets talk about how her company has handled localization of Hakuchuumu no Aojashin.
English release has changed the setting from Highschool to college. this is what she said about that change:
FIcIT_tWYAAbiC_

she tweeted this about highschool settings in general, a year before this events:

whatever BS argument theyre now using to deflect criticism, its true that the company's owner doesnt think very highly of this type of setting.

very professional

The woman seemed to be having a mental breakdown when fans complained about her translation of Rewrite+, which was also full of overly long translated lines and couldn't even keep the English lines in the game the same. If I recall, they did patch the botched English lines in the game, but can't be sure seeing as I don't own the game.

The clowns already seem offended that we are collecting their lies and ego trips.

Can't recall we were making money out of this? It's more, they are afraid of losing money because of this.

I love how Steiner has picked up on the cartel nickname of him and all these people with their little clubhouse

fucker should be paying me royalty for it, and lol at the projecting "all it would require is being a total shit bag who deliberately misrepresents his field of interest"... you mean like you already fucken do every day

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say the JP text in no way shape or form says anything about "mansplaining" a term that is only used by feminists to dismiss the opinions of men in a sexist way

but guess I should not be shocked by the same person who is defending the censorship of Cyanotype Daydream

Can't recall we were making money out of this? It's more, they are afraid of losing money because of this.

hay @holo you made millions of dollars off us yet lol. the fact they think it's all about money is telling to their mindset

"It can't be cuz we are injecting bullshit into the things they love and they want us to stop. it has to all be a massive grift"

I don't know if I can think of anyone off the top of my head who has made it big mainly off being anti-censorship/bullshit in localizations, least not to the extent these people seem to be talking about

Steiner is a 4channer, the cartel thing comes from there and is older than VNs on Steam era.
The 'cartel' label, while hyperbole, isn't entirely untrue now and certainly wasn't back then; I talked to more than a few people back in the day who were involved in the fan translation circles and they were all incredibly buddy buddy. At times, one couldn't really tell the difference between most groups (unless it was obvious like Doremi or Hadena being seperated from everyone else. Also oh god my sides, Hadena was a source of all sorts of spergery back in the day; there was a fucking dark time in which they were the only group subbing Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere). Many credits between both large and smaller groups would all share names. Hell, at least one gg member bragged to me over Skype about how he was absolutely certain that Daisuke was going to take off and make him and his buddies an assload of money. Perhaps it's better and less gay to say that they're big fish in very small ponds, but that's all semantics.

The only question now is how long it's going to take for the constant shouting of 'nigger' and 'faggot' they did back in the day to come full circle and eat them alive. Or what loli doujinshi translation they're going to inevitably be connected to and cancelled over. Exciting prospects all around, keep a fresh bag of popcorn around in the event that the Eye of Sauron shines upon someone found wanting.

Edit: The reason I'm dating myself and talking about fan translation groups is due to the very simple fact that, unless you can confirm that they worked for ADV or CPM back in the 90s/early 00s, you can safely assume that the same people who are doing pro-bono translations now were the same type of channers doing fan translations back in 2011. It's not at all coincidental that the average memified anime subtrack reads like a slightly less egregious version of gg's Valvrave trollsubs. Buyfags are straight up just paying monthly for the same shit we used to get for free back then. The encoding quality was better when it was free too, and I will fight you on that one.

people who lack any kind of strong morals are always the first ones to mention money, since well that and their ego seems to be the only thing important to them.
anyways EVERYONE should take notes of this comment and understand that 90% of these people think like this and at this point are beyond any redemtion. never expose your back to a fucking scoripion is what i say

I'm not a Zoomer, and as such I was/am still not psychotic enough to collect chat logs with the intent of using them against other people. Not that I could dig that far back anyways, most of these groups don't even exist anymore.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking localizers are becoming sketchy as of late.

I'm probably in the minority with this concern but I kinda fear with Seven Seas picking up alot of crossdressing stories (and labeling them all "LGBT"") they might try some underhanded shit with the character and maybe try and insert "hints" they're trans or something.

The crossdressing stories they picked up are a typical Boy x boy (boys love).

The strangest part about this? They do have a BL section. But only when theres a crossdresser involved they call it LGBT.

you can pretty much go and see for yourself.

There's also some tomfuckery with Japanese pronouns.

Now I'm no expert in japanese but I'm pretty sure first person pronouns in Japanese shouldn't correlate to our third person pronouns in English.

to be fair this has been happening for some time now, just that up until this point almost no one had gone tru the problems of archiveing all the bs these guys do

they will.
and hey who cares if it's something that a lot of us don't necessarily like, it's still bs that's related to localizers being shitty so why would i not help you?
