THIS. This is why I think that no changes are acceptable in translation. Even seemingly innocuous jokes or name changes. Give an inch and they will take a mile.No surprises. American """translators""" will make completely random changes without any rhyme or reason even when they aren't censoring or inserting their politics to the work because they are themselves failed writers and wish to take possession of the work they are translating. Had they translated the line faithfully, it would have been a line that some random Jap wrote and they merely rendered readable to an English-speaking audience, now it is a result of their own handiwork, regardless of what effect this might have on the quality of the work. It's why they love renaming characters so much, it makes them feel like they were a part of that character's creation and gives them possession of the character even when in reality they had nothing to do with the character at all.
They also are literally unable to stop renaming characters, and then they try to discuss said characters and force everyone else to use their shitty made-up names instead of the actual names of the characters.
t. some anon that put it better than I could
Agreed. I have researched some of the processes behind localization during the late 90s. I won't deny they were working with limitations and rushed schedules, but I also get the feeling they were prioritizing adding their own "flavor" to the text over the translating the technical details.Hell, I played chrono trigger a few years ago and noticed one of the npc's saying "energy whirls will dissipate if you use your slash attack" Then I looked it up and they actually in the original script said "tornado energy" or "tornadoes" will dissipate. They were telling you a trick you could use when fighing the merged form of masa and mune. (They have an attack where they wind up for it by "storing tornado energy" and when you use the slash attack the tornado energy is neutralized and it makes the fight easy.) So basically if you were a young child in the west playing this game when it came out, you probably had no idea to do that because of the horrible localization of that line and the fight was much harder than it needed to be. Or you had to grind for a long time to overlevel to get past that area.
Proper translation is very important.
This is why I no longer buy troonslated VNs. At least there's that one site that does edited MTL instead...View attachment 22995

Nepotism. They have taken over the hiring process so they just hire their friends instead of finding the most qualified people.Another one on the list of games that need retranslations. Can someone please tell me how these roaches are still getting hired?
I can only hope that someone has a Metaphor Lite Retranslation Patch. Because the fact this keeps happening is very annoying to me. I am a huge Atlus fan but with the recent issues of Translators trying to rewrite things and obfuscate personalities, terminology, and key Story Details which to me, are very important. When things are not translated with the care and attention to detail needed to do a good job, everything else falls apart and then nobody will talk about the games or remember them well, due to that effort showing up and become disappointed or demoralized. This goes for all the good JRPG's that could have existed and sold 2X more copies if Translators gave more effort and the occult status would have risen higher and would be legitimately into the highest placed games. But instead Translators just do not care, or they rush through it and make up things as they go along. For all the talk with Katrina about how AI Translations are very low end and they put in effort, it certainly does not show in these games they are working on. It's just mediocrity and not the good kind of when you try and things do not turn out the way you would like, but when the game creators try everything in their power to make a classic, and then the Translators decide to insert their ideology in between the text and what is actually written thus making it worse. We need better quality Translators, we need AI and people who actually care. Mediocrity was acceptable 14 years back, but today? Not at all.Pretty good Stream explaining covering most of the issues with the beginning of the game.
Plenty of new examples of how the localization butchered the characters' personalities, got terminology and names wrong,
left out key story details, and in general, tainted some of the nuanced writing with the bad "Ol English" dialect.
Unicorn Overlord, Metaphor Re;Fantazio, Eiyuden Chronicle, Granblue Fantasy Re;Link, Neo:The World Ends With You. Put it all on the Wishlist. Because really a lot of games that could have sold so much better, and have been pushed to higher if Translators cared enough, all fell below expectations and are shilled so heavily. Especially Unicorn Overlord which is very guilty of having people say it's good and get mad when called out on how poor the game is translated and how long the text is compared to the original. People were bored to tears by that game and everyone I have ever read their impressions on was always that the text is extremely long, boring, and really just dragging on forever despite shills misleading that it's actually good.>ye olde english
I hope Unicord Overlord gets retranslated to get rid of that too so I can finally give it a try
Same. Kinda insane how a hack translation company can just Butcher a game's writing for shits and giggles and face no consequences.>ye olde english
I hope Unicord Overlord gets retranslated to get rid of that too so I can finally give it a try
It's typical gaslighting and deflecting, lest people actually start digging and find out all their "effort" is a hackjob. If you think about it localization itself is gaslighting, lol.For all the talk with Katrina about how AI Translations are very low end and they put in effort, it certainly does not show in these games they are working on. It's just mediocrity and not the good kind of when you try and things do not turn out the way you would like, but when the game creators try everything in their power to make a classic, and then the Translators decide to insert their ideology in between the text and what is actually written thus making it worse.
How on earth do you get "I lived as you wanted" from 雨? The kanji for Rain. I'm still learning at an N5 level and even I know that. Goes to show as usual how low the bar is.Someone is apparently trying to fix Xenoblade 2's translation. More info down below.
